Since mentioning them on the show, the value of Bitcoins has halved.

So much for Pokercast karma.

Discussion of Investment opportunities appearing in a non financial situation is a classic contrarian indicator.

Well, maybe they should have Satoshi Nakamoto as the guest.

Good interview, thanks.

In the article MIT Releases Open-source Software That Reveals Invisible Motion and Detail in Video there is a specific reference to people contemplating ways to use Google glass and a new imaging technology to detect bluffing and/or cheating:
Quote:
In an interview with The New York Times, Michael Rubinstein, co-author of the EVM research paper presented at Siggraph last year, says he has been asked if it would be possible to run the software on Google Glass. “People wanted to be able to analyze their opponent during a poker game or blackjack and be able to know whether they’re cheating or not, just by the variation in their heart rate,” he says.

+1. Kinda reminded me a lot of comics that are hilarious and make jokes about their misery, but it's still there, sucking them dry.

I get the basics of bitcoin as a form of currency, independent of a central government. However, the volatility of it throws me off, especially when I hear the BTC crowd tell me how secure it is. What are these backed by? (To head it off af the pass: yes, I do realize that traditional money has not adhered to the gold standard in my lifetime.)

The story posted above about James Howells throwing out millions in BTC has added to my confusion. I get that he didn't actually dispose of physical currency but rather a key (albeit an extremely valuable one) that allows him to access his digital money. This suggests that his bitcoin still exists in some form, but he can't get to it. So now I'm picturing a bank account in which the owner has lost both his account number and PIN, only with no branch office or record of that information by which he can get his own funds. Is that at least a somewhat accurate analogy?

Finally, as much as I've read about mining, I feel like the concept of blocks and the contained mathematical problem is essentially a video game for which bitcoin is the point system. So it's hard for me to conceive bitcoin as anything else but coming out of nowhere.

Yeah, yeah, somewhere, someone well-versed in the bitcoin economy is laughing his ass off at my confusion.

It was hard to listen to this guy....trainwreck imo. As far as bitcoins go, I think there are far too many unanswered questions to make it a realistic option. Seems like things can change or get shut down with no warning.

Was there a Miss OTT mention that I missed? It's on.

That bitcoin model seems like it would be a good way to solve pi.

+1 I played a tournament on the weekend and sat beside a top online tournament pro for several hours and we chatted a lot. I've often thought that the positive change he and his well balanced peers can create in the world will be amazing. Bright, hard working, focussed, well travelled etc. Hopefully Justin finds good role models, he seems like a very bright decent lost kid.

The problem is that say each 'coin' is the n'th digit of Pi. In order to verify it, the broker would have to do the work again. So you end need a trapdoor/one-way function like a hash. You can verify it almost instantly, but it takes a loooooong time to find the solution.

Re: geolocation in NJ

I'm registered on wsop and 888poker, as well as partypoker/borgata and ultimatepoker.

Only UltimatePoker uses geolocation via cell signal ping. Thus, in my opinion, they are at a significant disadvantage v party/borg/wsop/888

First, to enable geolocation via cell, you need to make sure LTE is off. I would imagine that 90% of people interested in playing poker online are impatient enough that they have an LTE capable phone. To turn LTE off and make the geolocation work, you also need to restart your phone. That simple step is actually a big pain in the butt in my opinion.

All the other sites use wifi/ip address verification (there are multiple online gaming associated vendors licensed by NJ to support the gaming licensed vendors...).

Thus, traffic at the other sites is much higher than UltimatePoker. Right now, most liquidity appears to be at party/borgata (same client, different skins) and wsop (same client as 888, different skin).

Finally, I actually saw a prime time tv add for 888poker on a major network last night...wow

If this is true, the only way I'd put up with it is if there were no alternatives. I wonder how much business is being lost to WSOP.com because of this.
