If the player's father was on his deathbed and he left, probably there wouldn't be a big fuss, even if he knew he had cancer before and it got worse during the week he played. He's throwing away the chance at 8 million, but it's on a value scale we all understand. This religious stuff is not easy to understand, the values are so shifted.
It reminded me of Stu Unger, revered by many in the poker world, blinding out of the Main Event because he was coked out somewhere after having accumulated a massive chipstack on day 1.
