Sincerity is hard to disregard.
You've made this point a few times. What has you so convinced that this guy is any more sincere than any other guest we've had on the program? Do you know the guy?

Well, we don't (or at least I don't) know the player's thought process. What I do know is that for many people, it is logical to follow their values and faith and to act in way that keeps the family and family relationships healthy and strong. Many people of faith have very logical reasons for sticking to their values. Ignoring the logic of following one's values, value's that bring a family happiness, may be illogical.

I don't know the guy. What I do know is that I strongly doubt the Pokercast crew would be so dismissive of him in person (or on the phone) and I strongly doubt that a host would refer to him or his actions in person as foolish or stupid. My experience in life is that by spending time with very observant religious people I have a greater appreciation and understanding of their beliefs and choices.

I don't recall saying, suggesting or implying that other guests are or would be less sincere. That feels like a straw man argument.

Clearly you don't have much EV in having this guy on. I can tell from many of the posts here that most of the people responding think similarly to the Pokercast crew. But you have a least one listener who wants to hear such an interview. And frankly, I feel the Pokercast has piled on when it should have, or could have, considered a more respectful discussion.

I don't think the Pokercast should reward this person.

I'm surprised people took offense at the "breaking a rule" thing. The Catholic religion is all about breaking rules, then you just show up, confess them, say a couple of prayers, and all is good.

I think calling this guy stupid for making a -EV decision is really strange as a lot of people make those all the time. Would you call Ivey "stupid" because he plays craps.
I can remember a lot of episode where you sort of glorify -EV gamling, because you consider it a fun, degen thing to do. And that is perfectly okay. However I think having a "gambling olympics" - or whatever it was called exactly - is more or less the same as what this guy does. He sacrifices cEV and $EV for his emotional well-being.

Would I do the same? Hell no.
Can I understand it? Not really.
Do I think he is stupid? No more stupid than Ivey for pissing away money at craps.

I would call Ivey stupid if he just walked away from the craps table mid-roll with 8million in potential winnings still sitting on the felt.

Well, you said he shouldn't have entered the tournament in the first place. As long as he had this planned all along, he just chose to do some -EV gambling. It is financially retarded of course, but if that's his thing I don't care.

Loved the 4-handed format for the Pokercast tourney. Of course it helped I had 3 guys that folded to every raise, even though I was stealing 70% or so.
