Pokercast 456 - David Sklansky & Absolute Poker Refunds with Rich Muny

Episode #456 - April 12th, 2017

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - This week on the Pokercast: Legendary eccentric poker author David Sklansky (and his parrot) joins us on the show once again! To begin, United airlines victim David Dao has $260k in cashes? Eating insects, playoff season and MORE weight loss bets. In the news: DOJ announces Absolute Poker reimbursements and Rich Muny of the Poker Players Alliance gives us the details. Updated version of Libratus heads east to destroy more humans, WPT Tournament of Champions and Pokerstars Championship Macau main event. David Sklansky then joins us from his home in Nevada to talk about mental game coaches in poker, game theory, his new book “Poker & More, Unique Ideas & Concepts” and more. We’ve also got some mail including a strategy question and Pokercast guest power ratings. Plus some great tweets in 140 or Less and Adam’s got a favourite thing before we wrap it up.

Will the parrot have a speaking role?

Sklansky is just the nut low. That interview was so full of bull**** it's hard to know where to start cataloging it.

No winning players are losing due to tilt? This has to be the single dumbest thing ever said on the podcast, perhaps any podcast.

It's clear he has no idea what poker coaches do or anything about human psychology or performance.

Maybe you'll feel better if you think of it like a degen story of me taking the first place money and blasting it off in the pit.

Re: Pokercast 456 - David Sklansky & Absolute Poker Refunds with Rich Muny

The Sklansky interview was painful listening. Trying to bring in all the threads of 'poker players would be better served getting technical advice than tilt advice' took way too long, what with the parrot interrupting, the phone ringing and wrangling a book from the trunk.

Rich Muny was great. He made me want to help the PPA as much as I can. Sklansky, in contrast did not make me want to buy his book.

All that said, at 1:41:30 Adam and Terrence spend about five minutes in refreshing review (of the Sklansky interview), Ross hits a couple lol-worthy drops and the show finishes strong from there.

I didn't say that. Or at least didn't mean to. What I meant is that no poker player I have ever known who knows how to play well enough to make a living at it and who is trying to do just that fails in his quest because of tilt alone. He might at first but he eventually gets it under control without coaching when the alternative is a JOB and it is obvious that non tilting avoids that JOB. In extreme cases his tilt might cause him to go broke. But then he gets staked and staked players, knowing they are being watched won't tilt. In most cases it doesn't get to that point. Only mentally ill people who hate jobs and somehow have a non tilt game that could avoid that job don't have the willpower to eventually play close to their best at all times.

describing people that tilt as mentally ill is just wrong on so many levels.

Sklansky is the most desperate to sound intelligent person on earth yet he nearly always fails miserably. He thinks he can just pronounce the entire fields of sports phychology and human performance as fake based on personal anecdote and the fact that he passed his high school calculus exam.

But I didn't. I described as mentally ill people who tilted even though they wanted to play for a living and were fully aware that only tilt stopped them from that goal and they did it anyway. But as I said, I personally know no one who falls into that category. No one who people can point to and say "there goes someone who would have succeeded as a pro poker player if it wasn't for his tilting habits". I do however know hundreds who have claimed they were in that category.

Now that 2+2 is no longer the podcast sponsor can we have a segment on how the owners of the site fully support Trump even in the face of the recent news that Sessions is pushing for a federal ban on poker.

2+2 is part of the problem. Not the solution.

The owners of the site should be ashamed of themselves.

So you've downloaded Mason's political beliefs (whatever they are) on Terrence and I now.

Seems reasonable.

I know you are not a trump supporter so hopefully you will be calling them out when discussing Sessions.

Whether you like or dislike Trump should go on one of our political forums. As for my political beliefs, my plan is to always vote for Milton Friedman. Unfortunately, he's not with us anymore and thus can't be on the ballot. So I vote for who I think is the closest.

If you want to continue this discussion, it will need to be taken to the political forums. The purpose of this thread is Pokercast 456 - David Sklansky & Absolute Poker Refunds with Rich Muny.

Because the pokercast has nothing to do with a national movement to ban poker. Embarrassing.

It doesn't. At best, it could report on it, but it has nothing to do with it in the same way that the broadcast booth has nothing to do with the play-calling on the field (or court or pool).

Until now, I didn't know Malmuth was a Trump man. Don't really care. However, I do take issue with the phrase "fully support Trump" (emphasis added) because I have no reason to believe this is true. Malmuth may prefer Trump to the alternatives, but it doesn't mean he agrees with every word or policy by the President plus any of his underlings.

Re: Pokercast 456 - David Sklansky & Absolute Poker Refunds with Rich Muny

I'm not sure on the tilt never causing people to fail as poker pros. Maybe you have a definition issue? How do we prove someone was good enough? If you add in life leaks to tilt, we've seen tons of people who are believed good players who spent too much. Add in folks who played too big (even compulsively?) and went busto. Are those things tilt? Poor judgment? Lots of people play poker fine but can't survive as pros. 2+2 is full of stories of named pros turned scammer. Assuming they ever played well enough to be favorites to win, something stopped them. Calling that a mental game issue doesn't seem absurd. During the online heyday, you certainly saw long term winners go nuts and play HUHU matches for ego. Isn't that tilt?

I know a couple people who crushed online who couldn't transition to live. They couldn't hack the boredom, frustration, and lower stakes. They're not pros now because they couldn't perform in a live setting.
