Episode #436 - November 3rd, 2016

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - On this episode of the Pokercast: A full wrap up of the November 9 final table with guest host Ryan Laplante! Adam couldn’t join us for this episode so Ryan filled in last minute and we’re glad he did. Last year Ryan joined us on a similar episode to talk through the interesting hands that were played, we got a good reception from that podcast and this year we’ve got more of the same. Terrence and Ryan talk through a general rundown of the table and some of the storylines and then get into some of the more in depth strategy behind some of the most important hands of the final table.

My favorite line so far from Ryan at 1:33:00. "River is an insta-snap-fold. I would still think for 20 seconds to verify the river is a snapfold."

lol

Great job guys, loved the analysis.

I found Ryan's take on the set over set hand spot on, the shove by Vayo looked like a huge mistake and honestly I thought Josephy might actually find a fold there and drive everyone crazy.

Newhoused it.

Not normally a fan of the in depth strat talk but Ryan keeps it simple that even an old guy can understand it.

Terrence mentioned a Planet Money podcast about WSOP staking.

It was about Jake Balsinger from the Merson year. Pretty great story--roommates put up all $10k so I think he had 15% of himself. Wasn't even going to play the Main.

Great job, really enjoyed it

I am always down for in depth strategy talk, especially with really good players like Ryan and Terrence.

I completely agree with Ryan's take of the set over set hand, especially with the part of not raising in Vayo's spot.

That HU hand where Vayo flops Aces up vs Nguyens flush draw: Is 3betting the flop also a good option for Vayo? It seems he is so much ahead of Nguyens range here, and there are a lot of bad turn and river cards. He would also get value from a lot of draws.

Intersting you advocate limping HU 100% for Vayo when reasonably deep.
I always wonder whether failing to put money in pf with position and often a range advantage is leaving too much value on the table relative to the benefits of playing deeper. I would completely understand the argument once they are shallower.

And this, I lol'ed:

3b the A9 is certainly a viable play.

In Vayo's shoes id be calling to reduce variance and keep his range as wide as possible tho. The way Vayo played the rest of the match you could argue he should be raising.

Just because a decision seems easy doesnt mean you shouldnt take your time on it. Sometimes you can realize something you missed and turn an easy fold into a call.

Thanks for the reply!

Absolutely, that is actually also my approach. I am a classic nit roller.
The quote just sounded funny in the pod.

So betsizing against Terrence involves any number ending in a 9?

Ryan did a super job. He has grown tremendously as a speaker and analyst since his first episode. I thought his analysis was great.

Best wishes to Adam and family, whatever is going on.

Great episode.

By the way, this is perhaps my favorite strategy discussion anywhere. This, and Doug Polk's videos where he breaks down popular televised hands (or hands from Rounders).

Maybe it's because you (and Doug) are talking about hands we have a) seen, and b) a better sense of the opponents and context. That's quite a bit different from a discussion of a hand that at this point only exists as a hand history somewhere.

Anyway, nice work, yet again.
