Episode #421 - August 14th, 2016

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - This week on the Pokercast: Fresh off a sushi dinner, high stakes pro Dani Stern aka Ansky aka Supernova9 sits down with us live. You may know Dani from the cult poker reality show 2 Months 2 Million years ago, but Dani has been in the poker scene for a long time now and joins us to talk about an array of topics. We talk with Dani about the Pokerstars changes and what we can hope for in the future of online poker, moving to Vancouver, the live games in Vegas this summer, some PLO strategy and a few hand reviews. Dani sticks around for the news as well as we cover Baazov “leaving” Pokerstars, Bovada Poker closing, a fiasco in a PartyPoker $100k guarantee and more. After Dani heads out we get into some more of your mail, review the tweets of the week and some of Ross’ hands in the Roscoe Report.

Music: Budda Power Blues - I wanna please my baby (2015), No Tv No Radio - Praia (2015)

I'm super excited to hear how many times Ross calls him 'Danny'. My line is 2.5.

Interestingly (or not) my girlfriend's mom's name is Nina, but it's pronounced nine-uh, instead of neen-uh. This used to tilt the beejeezus out of me.

I'd be interested to hear John Beauprez' opinion of Ansky's PLO hand with bottom set. Surprised me. It must be very opponent-dependent, 'cause it feels like every time I've gotten that kind of stack in with bottom set, I've either been flipping (e.g. against a FD+wrap or something) or totally futtbucked (higher set).

Then again, I play PLO about as well as the organization PLO.

Great show, 'cept for the Lawrence Welk on xanax musak at the end.

I mentioned Russians at the final table of a Sunday Million a while back and it was clearly obvious that they had been talking behind the scenes. Would not surprise me in the least that the three mentioned in the Party segment knew each other. If there is a way to increase one's ev then some will make use of it.

I don't think I did, I only do it when I'm reading it because I'm an ape.

Really enjoyed the show this week. Maybe it is because I'm a bit behind, but the more often but shorter shows don't really make a lot of difference. If you want to listen to a longer one, just save up a couple. If it is more convenient for you guys to do 1-1.5 hour shows and do them more often, will listen however you do it.

Watching 2M2M, who'd have guessed that Dani would be the end boss of that group? Guess that's what reality TV buys you. Nice interview.

Think it was in this episode but maybe the last one, you had a guy ask about Mississippi straddles. You guys missed what I think as a key element, namely that he's under-rolled. While I agree that giving the illusion of action is important to getting invited back to a home/private game, voluntarily increasing close spots in a big bet game could be a big danger to someone who is tight on money and can't easily replace a lost roll. Even if the straddle is a little +EV from the BTN, he's going to find himself priced into playing for stacks with hands he's not comfortable playing with money he can't really lose. In his spot, I'd plead being poor as the reason for not straddling and wait until comfortably rolled to do it. Learning to play close spots is good. Not being broke is better.

+1

Also, any time the gang wants to spend talking about T's upcoming fight would be great. While I might be on the side of "I'm happy to listen to anything" rather than the "poker only, pls" group, hearing the inside tale of the upcoming fight is interesting.

I did this pretty quickly; I'm sure the hardcore MMA nerds will nitpick me some, but here's a good selection for casual folks looking to get into the classics.

As mentioned, for any of the UFC/WEC/Pride ones you'll have to get a subscription to UFC FIght Pass but you get a free 7-day (not month as I thought) trial.

Gray Maynard vs Frankie Edgar 2 (UFC 125)
Maynard/Edgar 3 (UFC 136)
Robbie Lawler vs Rory Macdonald 2 (UFC 189)
Anthony Pettis vs Ben Henderson 1 (WEC 53)
Nick Diaz vs Takanori Gomi (Pride 33)
Michael Chandler vs Eddie Alvarez (Bellator 58) [ https://tune.pk/video/3926646/bellat...chael-chandler ]
Mauricio Rua vs Dan Henderson (UFC 139)
Dustin Poirier vs Chan Sung Jung (UFC on Fuel 3)
