Episode #418 - July 22nd, 2016

Live from the Two Plus Two Studios - This week on the Pokercast: The November 9 is set, and we have the familiar voice of Lon McEachern to talk about how the main event was from the spectator and media perspective this year around. To start, Terrence is road tripping while Adam and Ross are in the studio and we talk about Terrence’s travels and the end of his world series before getting into the news. In ICYMI this week, November (and October) 9 news, player profiles and stories including the fact that there are 2 known players at the final table this year, one of them is in the IPWOF and one could easily qualify. Other stories include Matt Damon talking about Rounders in a BBC interview. We are then joined by Lon McEachern to get the insiders take on the main event coverage this year. John Beauprez comes on after him to talk about his WSOP, hands from the $10k and $25k PLO, high stakes cash games and games that people with basic fundamentals could beat. In the third segment we get into some great end of WSOP tweets in 140 or less, your voicemails and emails from the Mailbag and a few hands from the Roscoe Report.

Yes, Zion NP, good call, TChan! Lolz at low-stakes Tinder grinding. Great start!

Funny hearing Lon talk about how they producers have to keep him and Norm out of view late in the event. If you go back and watch the 2003 coverage, you can see Norman Chad on the rail of the feature table. At that point, he probably wasn't recognizable enough for it to be a concern.

I wonder, like, how many, like, times we heard "like" used, like, as a, like, disfluency in, like, this episode. Funny, I tune it out until my brain decides to pick up on it. Then it's all I hear.

As for a podcast on Full Tilt, never mind that – I want a 30 For 30 documentary series done on it in a similar fashion to the Made In America series on O.J.

I posted this in NVG but not everyone goes there... Matt Damon discussed the possibility of Rounders 2 on today's episode of Eisen:

Go to 16:30 mark. I wish he had clued us into what the idea was but maybe he has to stay mum's the word. But this further confirms the speculation that Levien and Koppelman have discussed a sequel.

Joe Hachem was 39 when he won the Main Event in 2005. Jerry Yang was 40. Technically, nobody over the age of 40 has won the Main Event since Dan Harrington made his prediction in 2004, but in 2007 when Yang won, the second-place finisher, Tuan Lam, was 41, and Raymond Rahme, who came in 3rd, was 61, so Harrington's prediction almost fell within three years.

This year, only Cliff Josephy is over 40, but Qui Nguyen is 39 (25% chance of him having a 40th birthday in the next three months), and there are only two players under 30. Median age at this year's final table is 34.

If you want to start getting technical then Jerry Yang was older than 40 (by some number of days)

Really enjoyed the show. Sad that we might not have one this week, but looking forward to All In or Knocked Out.

Love how Adam predicted that TChan will play about the same number of events. Knowing people who do the June in Vegas thing (and having done 7-10 day trips, myself), totally understand how T is feeling. The post Vegas hangover is a thing. Hitting nature on the way home is genius. Even after all that, next May he'll find the feelings of "why not hit up the WSOP" coming back. It is like that ex that you really shouldn't go have "just dinner" with, because you know where that's going to lead. Still you go to dinner or Vegas, and you wake up not respecting yourself in the morning.

Looking forward to next year's GoFundMe for Ross to be playing 5/5 PLO at the Rio for the summer. Cash games FTW.

I wrote an email to the guys yesterday that I think might shed some light on the Kyle Bowker fold. Or maybe it's just a crazy and incorrect theory I made up. Looking forward to hearing their takes!

Considering Lon did mention his name at one point in response to the slow play, but I don't think any of them heard about it.

And of course he is referring to the LOL horrible AA vs. KK hand where whomever it was (think it was Griffin) all of a sudden now had enough of his talking and slow play to act out and talk back now. Such an easy live tell that you have the nuts. I think KK is foldable there, and will see how obvious the act is on the TV show.

Also I the LHE hand from tilty Ross. We need more of that! I think the comments on the hand were spot on, but I think 3betting vs. folding is a lot closer preflop than they made it out to be. Its 6 handed and very villain dependent (which obv doesn't help Ross with 0 reads and the knack for cold calling).
