Pokercast 383 - Ray Coburn Pokercast 383 - Ray Coburn

So, I am a complete DFS noob. I dont follow any sports, so obviously DFS is not of interest to me. So, can someone please explain why Adam and others talk about the fact that only the Sharps are making money at it? Is it because they are able to calculate all the pertinent stats and form a good team? Wouldn't a hardcore fan of any of the sports be able to do this? I have buddies who can talk your ears off about the most inane stats about every hockey team and each individual player. Would this make them good DFS players? Or is it more about volume? Being able to enter 100 different teams for every contest is what makes them able to win?

Also, pigs don't have hooves. /nittery

It seems like pig's knuckles is more like the lower leg, rather than the trotter, so it's not that weird. I gnawed on a trotter once, in Asia, didn't really do much for me.

Except for the short lived 2+2/PokerCast DraftDay events from a couple years agp, I don't dabble in DFS. But I don't mind hearing about it because ffs why is being exposed to things you don't personally do a bad thing?

As Adam mentioned, people overestimate how much time is being spent on the topics they don't care about. So no, Ross should not stop playing PLO and the PokerCast should continue to acknowledge the existence of other forms of poker besides NLHE and talk about hockey. The whole "Serial" thing was completely off topic, and totally fun, and led to the best intro that has EVER been done on the show.

As a UK listener who cant play DFS I did find it a bit annoying that so much time was spent on the subject this week. OK there are similarities (or synergistic verticals ) between poker and DFS, both online, and having info that others dont can give you an edge (but not sure how much of an edge), cheating scandal in early days of industry shocker etc. I guess its fair enough for USA DFS players who have remained loyal listeners to the podcast while they couldnt play on-line. But can we stick to the pokerz - thats why we listen.

What I did learn about DFS was, unless you play for the pure fun of it and not in the hope of winning, dont play at all. The message seems to be that because of the sharps its massively -ev for casual players, even in the short term and at the lowest stakes.

That email about peeing in the cup while the other players deliberately tanked made me larf big-time. Terrible ruling though and the floorman should be given the boot.

I'm a fan of the Roscoe report, and all the other regular segments (poker related ones) You guys do a great job putting the show together every week. Still far and away the best poker podcast, whatever the itunes rankings say.

Any chance of getting Limon on the show to discuss all things poker - he is a 2+2 legend and pooh-bah. Recently made his 5000th post. Always an entertaining interview.

You just have to say his name three times.

Just to show the relationship between poker and DFS, Under The Gun podcast is half poker and half DFS.

Man what a brutal strategy minute with Bart Hanson this week lol "don't play small buy in tournaments." How else are the fish gonna move up Bart don't dissuade them!

...and he gets poker players moaning about DFS and DFS players moaning about poker.

DFS discussion was warranted I feel. It wasn't just for the sake of talking about it. After hearing of the 'scandal' I was actually looking forward to the topic to be discussed.

I don't play DFS, I don't know DFS, I don't understand DFS, and I think I'm missing a lot of the point of the DFS discussion. I was confused by most of what Ray was talking about -- his opinion, the inside guy from DraftKings did nothing wrong. OK, great, why not?

I don't mind the amount of DFS discussion because I can see how it relates to the early days of Internet poker -- but maybe a bit more 101 for those of us who have no clue of what the heck a "late swap" has to do with anything.

Apologies, that's a very good point. I'll be mindful of that going forward.

Trotters taste fine but you gotta make sure that the pig is dead to get full enjoyment.

Good run of shows guys, keep it up.

+1 with being cool on the DFS discussion. In the early days of poker, the edge that those who worked on their game had was like printing money. Seems like the same opportunity exists now for those dedicated enough and willing to work on DFS. I'm keen that the Pokercast stays leading edge for what is of interest to the community.

When OFC first took off, I managed to get in early thanks to the Pokercast, gain an edge, introduce it locally and make a few bob. ON DFS, I'll let those way smarter than me do the hard yards.

The Pokercast also encouraged me to get into online PLO early which I've never regretted. Jeff Hwang's books turned me into an early winner before the games totally changed and ranges were understood. Now I can't beat the micros

Whatever happened to Jeff? Guess what, he's dabbling in DFS and Baseball cards. Can we get him on the show please as we haven't covered Baseball Card Investment sufficiently ?

Adam has mentioned a couple of times the lack of feedback on the show threads, which must be frustrating. Latest show threads had 63, 28, 65, 74, 90, 23, 28, 55, 41, 61, 34, 28, 72, 42 and 37 replies. For me, these ups and downs reflected roughly my show enjoyment.

I rarely post in a thread because by the time I've finished listening to the show, I'm not at my desktop and the thought has gone. Any suggestions on how we can help the crew not feel as much in a vacuum?

Because it involves the same strategies and many poker pros have transitioned to it, I expect you to cover day trading strategies and scandals in next show

But that pee story from bravos made up for all of it. Thank god it was in the middle of the night, because I was swerving off the road from laughing so hard. This is now the third time the pokercast has done this.
a) "She's got a great Twitter" - this was actually life threatening on rush hour traffic in LA on the I-5. Combine that with me laughing hysterically as people kept honking at me.
b) Phil Hellmuth's poem - had to drive to the side of the road! Thankfully on surface roads where that was possible.
