Question for mike and adam;

How similar to the film "the goon" is ice hockey? Is there really that much fighting?

Re: no show this week, right?

Never seen the film, but in the NHL there is usually one player on each team who is responsible for the safety of the star players. If any opponent takes a cheap shot at a star player, the "enforcer" takes the ice and goes after the offending player. Usually the other team's enforcer then steps in and there is a fight between the two enforcers.

If the cheap shot is on a lesser player, that player usually takes it upon himself to fight the offender. If there are multiple cheap shots over a short span there is a good chance a general brawl will break out, but this is becoming rarer.

The penalties for fighting have increased, but there is a lot of resistance in the NHL to outright banning fighting, as international hockey does (fighting is an automatic game misconduct - which means the players are thrown out of the game and face suspension). The argument in some quarters is that if you ban fighting in the NHL then the retaliation will involve stickwork - which can lead to more serious injuries than straight up fighting with the gloves off.

Haven't seen 'The Goon' yet but fighting has always been prevelent at all levels of competitive hockey. Junior and minor pro have much more fighting than any other levels. Canadian hockey has more fighting than US college and European hockey.

Check out this site which archives all hockey fights. http://www.hockeyfights.com/ Youtube will also have hours of footage of many classic dust-ups as well. Goalie fights and bench clearing brawls are the most popular.

Off the top of my head search youtube for - Bob Probert, Gino Odjick, Donald Brashear, George Parros, Joey Kocur, Rick Rypien, Marty McSorley, Dave Schultz, Tony Twist, Dave Semenko, Georges Laraque, Nick Fotiu, Stan Jonathan, Tie Domi, Stu Grimson, Nick Kypreos, Bob Gassoff, Dave Brown, Troy Crowder, Lyndon Byers, Derek Boogaard, Craig Coxe, Wendel Clark, Krystof Oliwa, Peter Worrell, Tiger Williams, Tim Hunter, Barry Beck

e.g. - This was all in one game - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1-25s4uwFQ
