Terrence Chan MMA Thread - bumped for PRO fight in Hong Kong(March 30) Terrence Chan MMA Thread - bumped for PRO fight in Hong Kong(March 30)

As many of you who listen to the program regularly know, occasional co-host Terrence Chan has been avidly training in MMA for the past few years. On September 17th, he will appear on a fight card for Canada's emerging Pro/Amateur Battlefield Fight League.

ITT we will show support for Terrence and I'm sure TC will stop by the thread to answer any questions you may have as I know nothing about MMA.

Here is the card. I guess the smaller guys fight earlier in the day.

Good luck TC!

Is this your first major fight?

Racist ban for having him fight a Nguyen?

Thats really cool. Kudos to him for doing it.

Thanks for the love, MJ! We'll see if PokerCast karma also applies to getting punched in the face.

That fight card is not set in stone, but I should definitely be one of the first (if not the first) fight. They go generally in order of draw power and I'm a debuting 0-0 fighter. The guys at the top of the card are more known local quantities.

And yes, the humour value of fighting a Nguyen was not lost on me. I would trash talk with some "you throw left hook, it all ovah baby" or a "where my f@#&ing cocktail?" jokes, but I think it might be lost on him.

@Terrence -> You mentioned a handful of shows back about BC being nitty about MMA, does this count as Pankration that you had mentioned, or represent BC loosening up?

Ask him if he has a rice cooker in his hotel room obv.

Go T! I'll be there to watch my friend get punched in the face, going to be a strange experience.

This is MMA, technically amateur because the city of Vancouver has made it prohibitively expensive to run pro fights (only the UFC has the pockets to do it) in Vancouver proper. So no, the city of Vancouver still sucks and are in the stone age when it comes to MMA.

The quality of the fighters is high, though, even though it's technically amateur. There are a lot of people on the card who would legitimately be title contenders in pro shows in some other state or province. Production values are also really good.

What type of fighter would you label yourself as? Are you kind of a brawler/boxer with good bjj like diaz? More wrestling heavy?

Basically what are you good at, and what are you less good at?

Will def watch this if i can find a stream.

Boxers or Briefs?
08-19-2011 , 10:38 PM
What style of fighting do you consider to be your primary strength? Wrestling? Boxing? Kick Boxing? Muay-thai?

What weight class will you be fighting in?

On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being completely calm and 10 being about ready to throw up, how nervous do you think you'll be standing there right before the fight is supposed to start?

@broken_jia: Boxer briefs!

@SGT RJ: The fight is at a catchweight of 130 lbs.

My guess is that I'll be a 6 or 7 on the nervous scale. But it's impossible to say. I mean I haven't done any sort of big public performance since like a public speaking contest in Grade 7. In an ideal world I just go out there and have fun and enjoy the moment.

I'm somewhat reticent to talk about strengths/weaknesses and such, 2+2 tends to show up really high in Google results. But one thing that I've learned about my first real serious taste of MMA training is that it's so much more than the sum of its parts. Even if you're a slick submission artist in no-gi grappling doesn't mean you can hit sweeps and subs at will in MMA when you're getting punched in the face or have been exhausted shooting takedowns. Even if you're a superior wrestler it doesn't mean you'll be the guy getting the takedown when you have to deal with all his strikes on the feet. And of course even high-level strikers get outstruck in MMA when they have to deal with the threat of the takedown. One points to Shogun (BJJ black belt) being submitted by Forrest (purple at the time iirc), Koscheck (NCAA champ) being outwrestled by St. Pierre (never wrestled in college at all) and Crocop (2-time K-1 finalist) being outstruck on the feet by Fedor (a grappler, basically). All three are examples of a guy who has superior on-paper credentials in a specific skill set losing because they got worn down in the other areas of the game, and well, because MMA is different than any of its individual components. That's what makes it fun!

How different is this from the UFC as we know it? I enjoy watching UFC fights, but I couldn't imagine participating in one. (even though they are about 1000 times more tame than they were 12 years ago)

I'm assuming you're in a regular ring, and not an octagon?

**edit** Checked out some vids on the Battlefield site... Looks like an octagon. Cool.

Fair enough if you don't want to out where you consider to be your biggest weakness. Makes sense to me.

Do you have a favorite MMA fighter? What got you interested in the sport?

Oh, and go for the legs. I mean with kicks. Seems like a lot of fighters don't use that enough, IMO.

*disclaimer - I've never fought (ldo sissy girl), just a fan of MMA so you can feel free to ignore my advice.

BC Amateur rules vs UFC (more accurately, Unified MMA) rules: The biggest differences are the rounds will be 3 minutes long instead of 5 minutes, and elbow strikes are not permitted. Otherwise, pretty much the same.

Ring vs. "Octagon": As you saw in the videos, fight is in a cage. I don't know how many sides it has.

Favourite fighters: this is tough. I first got interested in training after a friend showed me some Sakuraba DVDs, so that's certainly an inspiration. My PokerStars avatar is José Aldo. Then there's B.J., A. Silva, all the obvious choices. I don't know. All the name pros are so amazing. I mean I've trained with guys, and they seem like absolute beasts to me. Then they go out on a big show and lose to a guy. Then that guy loses to some marginal UFCer, who gets pasted by a legitimate UFC contender. It's so tough to pick favourites when I think about what amazing athletes they are compared to me; I mean, they're all just so great.

Leg kicks: Anyone who has ever been hit by a leg kick so hard they couldn't finish the sparring round has respect for them. And that's almost everyone who has done enough sparring.

Yeah, it's an easy sport to get sucked into, I became a fan after a desk sergeant in Belgium threw in a highlight DVD one night and I watched the Matt Hughes fight where he body slammed the guy into unconsciousness while he himself was being choked out.

Best of luck to you as you prepare and for the fight. So balla.

Were you a Royce Gracie fan when he was dominating the UFC back in the early/mid '90's?

Those old fights could be SOOO brutal.

Tickets!

Use promo code CHAN to purchase. If I sell a bunch of tickets I'm much more likely to get put back on the card so pls/ty

@SGT RJ: That Hughes/Newton fight was crazy ****! Always thought Newton deserved to be awarded the win.

@1outter: I watched UFC 1 and the early UFCs, but unfortunately I never got into them. Pro wrestling seemed so much more interesting with its polished choreography. God, I was a dumb kid. My cousin and I often lament how good we'd be now if like other kids of that generation we took up BJJ after watching Royce choke out 300lb dudes left and right.

1. Were can we bet no this fight?
2. What round will u win?

Here is my wild crystal ball prediction for the after fight report.

After a very probing first round the judges would give it to the villain for that TIGER punch that was landed on the face but it seems like Terrence "Limit"CHAN was using his superior intellect to try to find out what the villains weakness was unfortunately for him the bell came too soon.

the second round was better Terrence"Limit"Chan recovered from the take down when he released a hail of sonic booms and finished his opponent with a spinning bird kick late in the second round.

my prediction is that you win in the second

Last minute card change. TChan is now facing off against Mickey.

(Couldn't find a non-hunky picture of Brad Pitt).
