Yes, the sponsorship has gained Stars very few new signups. As you said, the type of people who listen to a poker-related podcast probably already play online (assuming they're allowed to) and most who play online probably play on Stars.
However, the sponsorship might heighten traffic to Stars from
existing players. Before the DOJ took the mouse and keyboard out of my hands, I split my play between Tilt and Stars, with a preference for Tilt (yeah, yeah, shoot me... I ran better there). But every now and then, I'd hear of some cool promotion during Steve D's advertorial and it would get me to increase my play on Stars for a while.
I didn't play very much even when I was permitted to. But if you consider all of the multi-tabling grinders playing on even more sites than the two I played, and consider those who paid much more attention to FPPs and rakeback, that volume could have easily made the PS sponsorship worth its nut even if they never picked up another new customer.
Edit: oops, forgot to answer the question.
Count me among those who would be willing to pay a subscription fee for the PokerCast. Some of you are more devoted than I am, however. $25 per year is a snap-call. Once I hit $40-50 per year, I'd start to wonder if it's worth it. But I'd rather just donate it via PayPal or something.
Maybe we can hire Jack Walls to do a fundraiser.
Alternative idea: offer a shorter PokerCast as a free download. But save some content for a "premium" version for paying listeners. (Although Bunner probably doesn't like the idea of having to create two mixes.)
Another idea is to take a page out of WTF with Marc Maron: offer the last X number of episodes as a free download, as is. But sell older "classic" episodes for a small fee (Maron charges $1.99) after a certain date. It would be particularly cool if some of the old Rounders episodes could be revived in this manner.
