Also, one week semi-final and two week final seems better. That way Week 17 isn't this crucial.

The waiver system does give teams with a crappy draft (or drafter) a chance to salvage the season. I'm living proof. But I like the free agency system better, much more thought goes into your moves besides just a continuous dropping and picking up of players.
