Make Up Bonus Song Of The Day - Aug 6
#175 - Manchester Orchestra - I've Got Friends
From Manchester? Nope. Classic Brit-Pop Sound? Hell No. Unabashed Southern Emo Rockers from Atlanta, Georgia. Bink!!
American Emo/Screamo is not usually my bag but Manchester Orchestra's 2nd full length album does it about as well as anyone these days. More fiery than any of their previous work, MO is mostly the work of Andy Hull. This act seems to be improving at about the same pace as fellow southern fried rock acts Kings Of Leon and My Morning Jacket were on their 2nd major releases. Enjoy them now but look for a possible Foo Fighers-type career developing in the not-so-distance future.

Aug 7 - Song Of The Day
#174 - Kasabian - 'Where Did All The Love Go?'
I've loved Kasabian since the first second I heard the unforgettable 'Club Foot' almost 5 years ago. Since then, Kasabian have progressed(regressed) through a war-obsessed phase with 'Empire' to their current 70's Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd influenced sound on their Mercury Prize nominated album 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum'.
Despite being darlings in their home UK, with this album debuting at #1 on the British charts and receiving 4 and 5 star ratings from the likes of Uncut, Q and NME, these Leicestershire boys have still yet to have the state-side success they deserve.
Any song that opens with the question 'Ever took a punch in the rib cage, sonny?' makes my list fo sho'!

I'm not sure to be honest. There are tracks available by Wilco, Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park - just not the ones selected.
Kasabian added.

#173 Doves - 'Winter Hill'
4 years between Doves albums is far too long and locking yourself in a farmhouse and recording for 18 months, 18 freaking months should produce some stellar tunes. This selection proves it was worth the wait. Taken from their latest release 'Kingdom Of Rust', this song is vintage Doves sound but a little more ambitious and intellectual. Like any great song, this takes a while to sink into your skin and take over. I give you three versions to enjoy. Makes you want to check out the real Winter Hill in Northern England. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_...h_West_England)

Doves added.
I used to live in the shadow of Winter Hill. My old boss would look out of his window and say "I can see Winter Hill - It's going to be a fine day!"

Aug 8 - Song Of The Day
#172 - Miike Snow-Animal pronounced (Mee-kay)
Our first Swedish entry this year, you would have likely never pegged the electro production team of Bloodshy and Avant who have written such songs as 'Toxic' for Britney Spears and remixed for the likes of Madonna and Jennifer Lopez would be behind one of the best new indie pop acts of 2009. The production wizards join forces with singer/songwriter Andrew Wyatt to release one of the most pleasant surprises of the year. Terrific dirty reggae vocals on this one If there really is a genre called hip-pop then I guess this would be it. Warning: This song is almost too damn catchy. Prediction: Will suffer from being butchered by 35 different remixes before the year is done, but until then here's a few good versions.

Re: 2+2 Pokercast Top 200 Songs of 2009 Countdown Thread
Aug 9 - Song Of The Day
#171 - K'naan - Waving Flag
K'naan is a Canadian rapper but his roots, influence and inspiration are clearly tied to his homeland of Somalia. Born in Mogadishu, he lived in Somalia during the Civil War.
K'naan got his VISA to join his father in New York City on the last day the US embassy was open before the Somalian government collapsed. He later relocated to Toronto and claims to have learned English listening to legendary rapper Nas.
Despite living in North America for 18 years, his latest album Troubadour may be his most political yet. Whether it's a protest song or an inspirational anthem, 'Waving Flag' is one of the most memorable and emotional tracks of 2009.

Re: 2+2 Pokercast Top 200 Songs of 2009 Countdown Thread
Song Of The Day - August 10
#170 - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Young Adult Friction
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart are another contender for best new artist of the year.
Hailing from New York City, this indie pop act is attracting wide-ranging praise. If they can get the stick out of their asses long enough to enjoy it, fans of twee legends likes Belle & Sebastian should adore the melancholy vocals while devotees of the shoegazer scene of Ride and My Bloody Valentine will be hooked on the fuzzy distortion of it all. Getting past the fact that your favorite bands of the 80's and 90's don't have a patent on this sound is half the battle. Once you've done that, it will quickly become one of your favorite records of the year.

Re: 2+2 Pokercast Top 200 Songs of 2009 Countdown Thread
Song Of The Day - August 11
#169 - Bruce Springsteen - The Wrestler
Yeah, Yeah...the movie was released just before last Christmas. However, no one saw it until 2009 and many are still just discovering it on DVD now. More importantly, this song also appears as the final track on The Boss' 16th studio album, 'Working On a Dream'. which was released in January. How this song didn't even get nominated for an Oscar when it should have won the whole damn category was a travesty. Bruce must have been punished for already winning for 'Streets of Philadelphia'. Really good movie, great song.

If I'm not mistaken the strip club we visited on the vegas stag was used extensively as a backdrop for many scenes of the movie.
