Hey, im from Melbourne and ive been playing on Bet365 and pokerstars for a few years under the player ID 'Harpal'. Usually 2/4NL or $27 SNGs.
Dont head into Crown that often but should be there for the Melbourne Champions if i can afford it.

Thinking of living in Sydey or Melbourne for 6 months this year. Would appreciate comments about living in either city. I plan to play a lot of club cricket too! And my wife wants to do dive with sharks. How is the live poker scene ?

I'll talk about Sydney since thats where i'm from.

1 Casino (Star City). Poker open 10am-6am. 24hrs on weekends. 20 tables (max). Normally only get to capacity on weekends. Weekdays they normally run 6-8 tables.
Standard games. 1/2nl ($80bi), 5/5nl ($200bi), 5/5nl ($200-500bi), 5/10nl ($500-1000bi). 5/10 limit. 10/20 limit. 20/40 limit. 5/10-10/20 3card manilla. 5/10PLO ($500min bi). Also 4 electronic poker tables which pretty much only run 1/2nl.

Fairly well run casino. Most international visitors are shocked at the rake (You'll pay $25-30 an hour for most games over 1/2). Players are notoriously bad. Omaha (which runs prob. twice a week) is generally the biggest game on offer, and attracts a lot of crazy action. People are friendly.
Dealers are pretty good. You have to pay for drinks, and they're not cheap. No food/ipods/electrical devices/phones etc inside the pit.

I think its the only place they are allowed to offer cash games legally in Sydney. Though i've heard of smaller card rooms.

I don't play tournaments, but there are tonnes of venues that offer SNGs and MTTs all around Sydney at a range of buyins.

Sydney is the place to go if you are a tourist, Melbourne is the more liveable city in so many ways. Melbourne has much better roads and traffic, trams in the CBD and a pretty good public transport system.

Sport is pretty huge here, the MCG has a capacity of 100,000, hosts the Boxing Day test each year as well as Australian Rules Football all through the winter, the atmosphere there is amazing.

You won't have trouble finding a game of club cricket anywhere really, in my suburb alone we have 4 different teams, fielding teams in about 4 or 5 grades and I'm pretty sure that would be able standard around the country.

Melbourne and Sydney both have aquariums in the heart of the city, not sure what the deal is with swimming with sharks though. I actually just got back from the Great Barrier Reef where I went snorkelling. We saw some sharks while were out there, they are only reef sharks (about 1m big) and aren't really aggressive so that could be the best way to go about it.

Crown Casino is by far the superior poker room to Star City in Sydney. it hosts the Aussie Millions each year as well as the Melbourne and Victorian Poker Championships, all of which have high buy-in events and large fields. The poker room itself has about 50 tables and runs 24/7. The rake structure for no limit games kind of sucks at the low limits like $2/$3 there is a $5 time charge as well as decent rake taken every hand. Of course in Australia there is no expectation of tipping dealers. As well as spreading a decent amount of $2/$3nl, $2/$5nl and lots of limit hold em there are special days of the week where they run Omaha, Dealers Choice and other games.

Re: *** Official Aussie Full Ringers Thread ***

9am-3pm is generally the best time to play at Stars I find. Its the peak traffic time, there are so many tables to choose from that there are a plethora of high VPIP ones running @ 100nl and 200nl. There are still loose tables and bad players around at night, but if you play a lot of tables it's hard to find enough to play without compromising your table selection principles.

Indian Premier League starts this Friday, anyone interested in getting a little tipping competition going? Maybe like $50 a head?

Was a pretty amazing knock. I love watching guys that just have no respect for the bowling, moving around the crease and playing paddle shots to every corner of the ground. The Knights certainly look like the team to beat.
