Re: ###!!!The Official 2012 FTP Regs Thread!!!###

Going to re hash an old story.

Before xmas I took part in an event for charity with four mates. Our goal was to run for 24 hours non stop as a team, whereby one person would be on the treadmill at any time during the 24 hours. To ensure this happened two treadmills were used for cross over purposes. We set the minimum speed at 10km/hr for the full 24 hours thereby running 240km, 150 miles. This meant a commitment of 30 miles per person which on paper really didnt sound that hard. We ran for half an hour and then had two hours rest and repeated this process for the full 24 hours.

Now this is where the story becomes relevant, we all completed the 24 hours and the distance set, however my knees and other joints were killed by the end. I had terrible stomach pain too while running probably caused by trapped gas and stomach acid and I think a distance over 30 miles would have been out of reach for me. It really made me realise the enormity of the challenge that ashman took on in commiting to 72 miles in 24 hours. At the time I thought very hard and physically demanding but I felt when pushed I could also raise the game and do it but now I m of the opinion I couldnt, not even for 1 million! As quite a physically fit guy it makes me appreciate a) how unbelievably fit ashman must be b) ashmans mental strength and c) the danger he was putting his body in by completing this bet.

Old topic I know but thought id share

lol it's more than a marathon in 6 hours. Yes it's a bit easier when not consecutive, but it's also harder on your body unless you guys were staying super diligent with stretching and even then it's probably way tougher on your body to start/stop like that all the time. You guys must all be in pretty good shape to do this, definitely no joke.

Re: ###!!!The Official 2012 FTP Regs Thread!!!###

I once ran a half marathon (1:57) and busted my knee, 8 years later and it still bothers me from time to time. I'm in in constant awe of world class athletes. The dedication it takes to hone your body/mind to such a degree is ridiculous. I wish I had the dedication.

Re: ###!!!The Official 2012 FTP Regs Thread!!!###

I appreciated the distance was large, with the format we devised I assumed we would never exert enough stress that 2 hours recovery wouldnt be enough. From a cardio perspective I was correct as I never really felt in danger of becoming exhausted and unable to breathe properly. The damage was the legs with repetetive stress placed on the knees and achilles and the build up of lactic acid to tighten the muscles despite good warm up and cool down sessions. Even my back, arms and shoulders were hurting by the end. I cant even imagine doubling the distance, ashman is a beast.

At the time of reading the prop bet I personally felt it was doable even though i disagreed with dogishead taking the action against a friend. Ive now completely changed my opinion, it seems clear that dogishead clearly thought he was getting free money, which to take from a friend is pretty sickening.
