Easy fold or was this a call? Thoughts on earlier streets also appreciated.
I actually played a similar situation this past weekend with pocket queens, and lost to a flush. If I analyzed the situation more carefully, I would have had a better chance to save my chips.
This is just my opinion and I'm learning about poker everyday still.
Think about the possible hands the player can have.
UTG+1's initial raise, and you can eliminate AA, AK, AQ, A10, KK, QQ, JJ,
After you raise, and he calls your re-raise, now you want to think what he could be calling with.
On Flop and Turns, he seems to be calling rather than re-raising. He doesn't have the absolute best hand.
1. The post flop pot bet was good.
One theory: He started off with A10. And looks like he checks, but everytime you bet, he called. Looks like he was trying to draw to a straight, or thought you held a hand like AK, KQ, KJ, and made nothing as well. As soon as river hit, he completes his straight, and he shoves. But if he had made his 10 high straight, and he was trying to extract the most amount of money from you, it would of been smarter for him not to go all in like that, inducing you to fold and made a smaller bet to extract some more money out of you.
On the river, he was first to act. He wouldn't be sure if you had made your straight as well, so being able to act first and make that all in move, must mean he's very confident with his hand.
2. I think the mistake at the turn, is for you to bet the pot again. The eight is a dangerous card for you. If he had an Ace Eight, he would have made his set. You were making a bet, hoping he would fold, but that eight didn't seem to scare him one bit. You could possibly check, and then wait for the river card to try and take control of the situation again. But you were afraid of straights being made on the river.
I would say overall, that's a tough hand and a good fold.
