Wrist position in golf swing Wrist position in golf swing

Played a few holes at weekend and my mate was showing me the camera on the iPhone 5s. He took a slow motion video of me taking a pitch shot from about 100 yards. When watching I was horrified at the extent of how far and immediate I was bending my left wrist inwards (I'm a righty). I assume this is bad as not seen anyone else do this.

Anyone got any input, drills or vids on this subject?

.I'm confused by turning inward. Do you mean bowed/cupped, or supinated/pronated?

Just did a quick search and my left wrist is bowed. I went to the range yesterday and tried to hit balls without doing it which was difficult but will keep working on it.

Get the tour angle teaching aid.

during your backswing, rotate your left forearm more while keeping your wrist angle. this should allow the club head and shaft to swing on a more symmetrical arc. less across the line at the top and more around your body.

I'm of the impression that you shouldn't just fix your wrist position for the sake of doing so just because it doesn't look like 90% of other golfers or whatever. Several of the best ball strikers have a very bowed wrist position (Trevino, DJohnson freakishly bowed).

Changing your wrist position in the swing could lead to other problems, and unless you are hooking the ball like crazy I wouldn't do it just to do it, not without seeing your swing. Heck I've seen bowed wrists lead to wide open clubfaces at impact just because the pressure to bow is so great that there is overcorrection in the downswing.

Got any slow motion video?

FWIW I think a bowed left wrist is a good thing, much better than the other way around. It really depends on your release pattern and hip rotation as to what is likely best.

I will see if I can get hold of the slow mo vid if not will get another one taken.

My main miss is a push but I also do my fair share of hooks and slices off the tee. I had a lesson about a year ago where my swing was out to in and I worked on correcting this, I have a feeling I started bowing my wrist at this point unintentionally to get the club round my body more but there is also a chance I have always done this and not realised.

Swing uploaded, quality might not be great as its been sent to me over text.

From memory it was from maybe just less than 100 yards, using a PW, probably not my full swing. Ball landed pretty much on target and rolled of back off green.

Oh and forgive me wearing jeans on the golf course, it was a spur of the moment game on an awful public course and I was probably the smartest there!

Go easy, any help/comments would be great.

Yeah looks pretty massively bowed. To be honest I kinda like that position, but I might be in the minority. You're very compact at the top, and your clubface relative to the path goes from shut to open to the target line from the period of 9 to 3, which is usually a good thing for consistency. It's causing some power issues though as you aren't getting a normal wrist cock. I take it your grip is very weak?

Cheers seadood,

My grip is pretty much neutral. I'm definitely down on distance recently which from your comments makes me think this is something that has crept in or got worse. I reckon I'm down about 20 yards on my irons. This has resulted in such a massive gap between my 5 iron and 3 hybrid that I'm planning on buying a 4i.

Any pointers on what I can do to improve?

I just googled 9 to 3 drill, this is a piece from a Slicefixer vid he gives to his students, there is a lot of writing on the videos, but practicing getting your club in those 2 positions, then impact, then working on your pivot will help immensely. 4:25 and beyond are the heavy parts.
