My wife and a few of her friends want to learn how to golf (last year it was gardening). I figured that I'd take them to hit balls on the range next weekend (maybe the putting green).

I can play somewhat well; I can teach pretty well (AP Stats); but I can't teach golf, that's a different animal.

What do you recommend I do with these noobs?

Encourage them to sign up for a group lesson that day while you go have fun.

Send them to a group lesson. Send them to play together as a group of friends. Don't bother playing with them for many long times.

Group lesson, easy answer. The PGA of America has a program for this: Get Golf Ready..

Update: I pitched the group lesson idea to the women, and they shot me down. Apparently, I golf + I teach = I can teach golf.

I was thinking we would start with 6 or 7 irons & eventually work our way up to Woods.
-How to hold the club?
-Where to position the ball?
-Hit it (hopefully) and have fun (hopefully).

So what basic things should I recommend?

Chipping, and a lot of time not even hitting balls. Just taking practice swing and building coordination and rhythm.

My opinion on wives and golf is that if they go out and try to learn on their own, and play with THEIR friends (or alone), then they are actual golfers. If the only time they play is with their husband, then they don't really love the game.

op,

surely you can show them a thing or two.......... i'm helped fix tons of peoples swings with little adjustments and it's always worked really well - at least at that moment.

probably best to either start with something really fun and easy like mini-golf - making clear that you will progress - or teeing the ball up and letting them hit driver.

i think alot of times women/beginners don't have enough clubhead speed and/or hand-eye to hit irons very well.

so definitely do either mini-golf, pitch-putt or hitting teed up balls at range.

So, we did it. I took my wife, 4 of her friends, and our 3 kids to the driving range. We teed them up and hit mid irons. One of the gals had obviously played at one time, so she offered some other tips. Fun was had, and the husbands drank for free at the pool afterwards.

Apparently, I embarrass my wife while I drink (and she doesn't).

Next time, we are going to chip and putt.
