Two man scramble this weekend. Made everything we looked at yesterday, could only manage 5 birdies against 4 bogeys today.

Played five rounds in NC last week. Scorekeeping was suspect but they were all 85 or 86 except an 81 on the card at Tobacco Road.

First proper round back of the year. Pleasantly surprised with the 90 i hit. (21.6 hcp). Started with a couple of double bogeys, but played 15/16/17 in par par par. Doubled the last but feel im hitting it well. With my irons anyway. My driver was wayward and it took me a while to get my putting dialed in.

2nd round of the year for me today. Really soft/soggy fairways--which made it really difficult for me to get into a rhythm and have confidence in my stroke. Nonetheless, I hit an 88 (46-42) on a 6500 yard course (71.8 course rating / 126 slope). Driver was treating me well, but my approach shots were getting chunked way too often.

I was actually better off hitting from the rough than the fairways today, imo.

Shot an 87 Saturday for my best round ever, nothing worse than a double, 1 birdie and several pars. Today started out 1. Par 2. Birdie, then hit a mediocre drive on 3 and was 190 yards out, hit a perfect 5 iron over a big oak tree and when I got to the green found that it was in the hole! Maybe not the biggest Easter miracle of all time but no worse than #2. So I was at 8 (-3) after 3 holes, then took a 10 on #4 and ended up with a 93. Still a good score for me, and birdied #17 too. Was happy but kind of disappointed with having 2 blowup holes (a 10 and an 8) since I've been focused on eliminating then.

34-45-79. 2 birdies, 2 double bogeys. Bogeyed the first hole, birdied 5 and 9 to get into red figures, made bogeys on 11, 12, 13 and limped home. Lost focus and my swing. Derp.

Shot 86 for my first round out in 6 months. Topped/thinned a few tee-shots, chunked a few chips, missed a few short putts. But it doesn't matter, I played golf bitches!!!!!!!

51-51 today. 2nd round of the season. Doing this new thing on my iron shots where I rotate the club in my hand on the downswing, and completely mi**** the ball. Short game is only thing saving me right now. Good thing it is early in the season, so I can work out the kinks.

tip I got on Sunday that helped me today in hitting a cut or straight ball (normally hit a draw and miss with a hook more often than a cut) was to grip the top three fingers on your top hand as hard as possible through the swing. This makes it basically impossible to roll your wrists and snap it over.

I'm sure no one else does this, but I was completely thinning every iron shot and hitting weak fades with my driver. Guy observed that I was basically swinging flat (meaning my shoulders were turning right to left instead of my right shoulder turning under towards the target).

Not today but I recently changed driver from an oldish Srixon club with a smaller face, to a Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 Driver.

I hadn't played golf over Winter and when I came back with that Srixon club I shot around 110 which is what I'd expect having not played for ages.

Got the Taylormade, didn't get fitted for it or any of that, first time I used it was on the first tee and boom went round the front 9 in 43, my best ever. Albeit I shot 56 on the back 9 but the foundations were there.

Last time I went out I shot 52-47 (really good par on the last, a 170yd par 3) to break 100 for the second round in a row. I also felt like I left a load of shots out there on the course. What a difference that driver has made, not just to my driving but it really is a confidence builder too. Shooting under 100 was a rarity for me but now it feels achievable every round the way I have played recently.

strange round ... +1 on tough par 3's (and could have been much better).... +10 on easy par 5's (off tee nicely on 2 of them).... very weird...... moving more to lofted fw vs long irons, hence the great par 3 play..

btw wet fairways and sand was culprit on par5's but still unacceptable

Just enough time to get to the local par 3 course. 35 (+6). Tripled the last after a horrible skull into the water; other than that I hit it pretty well on a very windy day.

Are there 9 2/3 holes on the course?

Ha!

Nah, there are a couple of short par 4s ~280-300 yards, both basically 90 degree doglegs around water (4i-3w out, then ~90 yard wedge on).

Perhaps "par 3 course" is a bit of a misnomer.

Figured I'd do a round recap...haven't done one in a while and had a weird round:

Course: Par 71, 74.7/143, 7,000 yds
1: 440 yard par 4.
Perfect drive right down the middle ends up in stupid bunker. 6 iron from 160ish out of hell bunker hit extremely fat and into a tame hazard. Great 80% pitching wedge from 110 yards to back tier about 8 feet away. Terrible putt 3 feet past and to the right. Another terrible putt missed. Double.

2: 460 yard par 4.
Drive left into trees. 3 iron punch out to 70 yards. Great wedge stuck to 4 feet. Terrible putt. Bogey.

3: 215 yard par 3.
Terrible 5 wood left out to the right. Insanely awesome pitch from 35 yards with no green to work with to 20 feet. Lip out putt. Bogey.

4: 420 yard par 4.
Drive right down the middle. Nice 4 iron to the back of the green. Putt went 6 feet past. Bad 6 footer missed. Bogey.

5: 440 yard par 4.
Drive right down the middle into the wind. 4 iron just left of the green on the fringe. Blew the putt about 15 feet past. Made a huge breaker for my First Par!!

6: 672 yard par 5.
Cardinal sin hook up against a tree, almost had to hit it left handed, but managed to pitch out into the fairway sideways. Iffy 3 wood to 190ish. Very good 3 iron to 25 feet. Putt goes 4 feet to the left. 4 footer lips out. Double!!

6: 155 yard par 3.
7 iron all over it, thought it went in for a second. Of course it's 25 feet above the hole and almost impossible to stop. Putt stops 2 feet past the hole, I basically miss the straight up hill 2 footer, but it was close enough and the slope steep enough that it fell back in the hole. Lol. Par.

7: 370 yard par 4.
Pulled drive away from water into trees. Stupid decision tried to pitch it through trees and ball ended up at my feet. Really bad attempt to thread it through trees again ends up short of green. Nice pitch to 8 feet checked up. Blew 8 footer 3 feet past the hole, missed the 3 foot slider. Triple.

9: 390 yard par 4.
Bad swing, but okay result driver to left side barely in rough. 170 left, hit super solid 5 iron to 6 feet. Make putt. Birdie!
Front 9: 44, 3/7 fairways 3/9 greens, an assload of putts.

10:450 yard par 4.
Crap pull driver is in fine shape. 4 iron from 200ish sneaks onto the green about 20 feet away. Terrible putt blows 4 feet past. Par putt not even close, nice 3 putt dickwad. Bogey.

11: 560 yard par 5.
Pulled driver, lucky not to be in water, but standing basically in hazard, wedging it out with grip on the steel. Great wedge shot. Terrible decision to hit a 5 wood on the green from 230 goes awry and way right, should have been OB. Thread crazy awesome 5 iron from 80 yards through trees, over a giant mound, in between bunkers, to 10 feet. Par putt not close. Bogey.

12: 175 yard par 3.
Into the wind 3 iron 30 feet left of pin. Drain putt. Birdie.

13: 445 yard par 4.
90 degree dogleg left, pin on crazy back tier. Great drive and great approach 40 feet right of pin. Lag putt looked really good, went about 3 feet by. Not even close par putt. Bogey.

14: 400 yard par 4.
Great drive, stuck pitching wedge to 5 feet, not even close. Par.

15: 240 yard par 3.
Great 5 wood 25 feet left of pin. Putt almost went in, tap in par.

16: 300 yard par 4.
Driver to front fringe. Putt over giant ridge from 60ish feet went about 12 feet past. Drained a strong breaker. Birdie.

17: 550 yard par 5.
Great drive tempted me, but hit a crappy layup instead onto a mound. Hit an awesome gap wedge to 5 feet, birdie putt not close, par.

18: 380 yard par 4.
Split fairway here, took the "more risky" side. Driver down the middle. Awesome wedge that was a foot short of perfect, and spun back about 40 feet. Great lag putt over a ridge to 4 feet. Finished it off with my 7th 3 putt.

Back 9: 38. 5/7 fairways, 8/9 greens, and an assload of putts.

Shot an 82 which actually lowered my handicap to 4.7, but probably should've been about a 71.

First round out of the season, and managed a 78. My putting was better than any round I played all last year. Which is kind of mind blowing considering I didn't practise it once in the off season. Never bothered figuring out a handicap for myself because the start of the season is usually some pretty nasty rounds, which would be disheartening to put on paper. Considering good start I already downloaded handicap app, and gonna attempt logging my rounds!

Went out this afternoon for a quick 9 with my brother and we both played our best rounds of the year so far. The first couple holes my ball striking was iffy but my short game saved me.

1- ~380 yard par 4: Weak push fade off the tee into the right rough just under a tree but with a look at the green. Caught my ~155 yard approach super thin and was left with about 25 in from the right rough. Hit a good pitch that settled at around 8 feet, which I drained for a nice up and down.

2- ~150 yard par 3: Slightly thin, but straight tee shot rolls onto the green and stops ~20-25 feet away. 2 putt par.

3- ~350 yard dog leg left par 4: Good 3W off the tee leaves me with ~125 in. Thin my approach badly (again) and luckily bounce out of the wet bunker and settle pin high to the right of the green. Almost hole out the short pitch, but it rolls out to about ~12 feet and I missed the putt. 2 putt bogie.

4- ~310 yard par 4: Another strong 3W down the left side of the fairway left me with about ~85 in. This hole is deceptively tough if all you know about it is the yardage, because it has a severely domed green- I almost never actually stick an approach shot on the green, but I did this time and 2 putted for a par on a hole where my scoring average has to be close to 6.

5- ~360 yard par 4: Hit a great drive that unfortunately didn't go as far as it should have because it got almost zero rollout as a result of the soggy fairway from yesterday's rain. Either way I was left with ~120 in (slightly downhill), but I (again) thinned my wedge over the green. It was an especially poor spot for such a shot because the woods are close behind the green. I actually had to play my 3rd shot from in the middle of the woods and did the best I could to get the ball to the fringe. 1 putt from the fringe + 2 putts on the green meant my first double of the day- +3.

6- ~380 yard par 4: Another strong drive with almost non-existant rollout left me with ~145 in. My 7i ended up pin high and checked up nicely, but I missed the ~15 foot birdie putt an inch or so left. 2 putt par.

7- ~190 yard par 3: Ugh. This hole is usually fairly rough for me because it is significantly uphill too, which means that I can't get there with anything less than a 4h, and expecting me to hit a club that long accurately is usually a risky proposition. This time, however, I did. I hit a beautiful baby draw with my 4h that ended up almost pin high on the right fringe. That was the last good thing I did on this hole. First putt from the fringe was a decent line but too hard by about 10 feet. The green is severely sloped back to front, so even though I almost made the next putt I ran it past another 8 feet or so. Missed the comebacker. 4 putts (technically I guess the one from the fringe doesn't count, but it does to me) for a double :|. +5.

8- ~360 yard par 4: Slight push fade that cost me some distance on my tee shot had me playing my approach from ~130 just barely in the right rough. Approach was decent- landed and stopped a couple feet onto the front right of the green (the pin was front middle). Ran first putt 8 or 9 feet past, missed comebacker, 3 putt bogie. +6.

9- ~520 yard par 5: Hit my worst tee shot since #1- it wasn't awful, but it was a borderline mi**** that lose a good 30 or so yards of distance as a result. It ended up in the fairway though, which is fine since there's no way for me to reasonably go for the green in 2 anyway. Second shot hit a good 4h right down the middle of the fairway, leaving me ~125 or so uphill in. Approach was solid, but slightly left and a little short, so it ended up about 5 feet off the front left of the green (pin was back left of a long skinny green). Chip left some to be desired, leaving me with a 15 footer with significant right to left break for my par, which I drained.

+6 41- Not a bad round for me. I had a ton of mi**** approaches in the first 5 holes, but my short game bailed me out. After that I didn't have any more mi****s, but then my putter started to let me down (#9 not included obv). I was using the same swing thoughts and general methodology as I have my last few rounds, which I think helped. If I can keep this up and avoid switching things up again maybe I can make some real progress in the next couple weeks.
