If you are lying 8 and not on the green yet you can pick up if pace of play dictates so. Because even if you get up and down you are at max. 10. If you're lying 7 and are pretty good with the short game go ahead and see if you can get up and down for the 9.
I've had to do this a few times. It's also better for my general temperament.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
I followed up Saturday's miracle round 78 with an 87 on Sunday, back to normal! Played with some douchebag who kept saying "NIIIIIIICE SHOTTT" on balls that were 40+ yards offline. My blood pressure was at volcanic levels by the middle of the front 9.

Had 5 putts that were 1 roll or less from falling yesterday + a dbl bogey.
Finished in 72
What could have been. Still eagerly waiting to break 70 this year.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
59-51 = 110.
Stroke short of my goal for the day, missed the putt on 18 about 6 inches to the left. Driver was crap, as always. My hybrids were not working like they normally would and my swing was just off all day.
I did chip a shot in from the rough to save par though, second round in a row doing so
If it were not for my better than average short game, I'da shot a 120 or more.

Playing 36-45 tomorrow at a course my friend works at, so need to put together some good rounds to start feeling better about my game.
Ive played 26 rounds so far this year and really thought Id be further along than I am, which sucks, but still got alotta golf left to play this year so hopefully I can still see some noticeable difference.

44-38/82 and 42-39/81 from the Blues at James Baird SP, which were playing at about 6750 which is a pretty long course for me.
They had the catholic school state championships there the day before and left the pins in the same spots so we got to play and see how we measured up. Top 5 advanced with the scores being 72,72, 76,76,78 I believe...so not that far off. Never broken 40 on the back there, so to do it twice from the blues was a huge boost of confidence for me. Played great off the tee, irons were mediocre and the putter was on fire.
Played the next day at Saxon Woods and shot 43-40/83..horrible off the tee but made putts from everywhere. back to back 20 + foot putts and 4 total for the day.
Played today at Hudson Hills at shot 43-43/86...Great off the tee, struck my irons well and hit alotta greens...and of course in typical fashion, I have five 3 putts. Today was a day where I struck the ball well enough to shoot 80 or 81, but my putting was terrible...couldnt get the speed right.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
97 and 101 over the weekend, worst rounds of the year for me.
Today I fired an 81 with 40! putts. Ball striking was obviously awesome. Still the best round of my life though by 1 stroke, and a 38 on the back my best 9. Was -1 through 6 on the back, this game is so much fun when you're playing good.
hit 10 fairways and 13 greens. REALLY need to start putting better.
http://oobgolf.com/golfers/score.php?id=1567006
Definitely noteworthy: played from the whites today, which I haven't done in many years. I was playing with a friend who plays the whites and he said if I played the blues he was going to have to as well, and I didn't want to force him to play longer tees. As you can see this resulted in my hitting 5wood a lot today.

Second hole on the course, a par 4 430, I hit driver 7 iron to a pin that was like 2 paces on the front. The approach shot came in really low then one-hopped after landing and came up 2 inches short of going in. I wish I could bottle up whatever I felt today, because it sure worked for me.

Thanks guys!
So, I never really add up numbers on my scorecard, I just go back over the card and count up how many over par I was. Well, I just entered the Toot score into leaderboard.com and realized I actually shot a 77 Saturday.
That ties my best round ever and made me THAT much more excited

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
I played nine holes at a par three course today. Went off on my own which was nice. I don't have an exact score but my ball striking was pretty good while my putting was really poor.
1 -- 127 yard, straight hole. Easiest hole on the course. I hit an 8 iron onto the green but needed three putts. Gross.
2 -- 166 yards, slightly uphill. I used a 5 iron and ended up in a bunker just short and right of the green. My bunker play was god awful.
Okay I don't feel like writing about all the holes but how about this:
I warmed up on the range first and I have a couple questions about some new things I tried with my swing. One, I had the ball further back in my stance than usual. I usually have it just inside my front foot but today I was putting it just inside my back foot. Two, and this one is tough to explain, but I didn't try to keep my arms mostly straight throughout the back swing like I usually do. Instead, I had a little pause at the top of my back swing and sort of used that to create a lot of tension (not sure if that is the right word) and "build up" in my swing. As a result, the ball seemed to go a lot further and generally went straighter as well.
Any comments? Is that the way I should be hitting? Does this make any sense at all?
I think I was told a while ago that the ball will usually go higher in the air if you have it at the front of your stance while you are addressing it and will have a lower flight path if it's in the back of your stance. But that is not what I had going on today, it seems.
TIA. I feel like I should take a couple lessons. Maybe later this summer.
Wrong thread?

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
That's a pretty drastic change going from just inside front foot to just inside back foot. Why did you try this?
I set the ball further back in my swing than most people it seems, and that sounds really hard to hit iyam. Were these just iron shots or drivers, too?
I'm getting better at striking the driver just inside my front foot. What I like about it is it gives my hands time to turn over through the ball and as long as I execute I will hit it straight. When I hit high mega slices I know instantly what went wrong was my hands didn't turn over through the ball which is either poor execution, ball placed too far back in stance, or some combo of both. It still takes a bit to get used to though.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
50-53-103 today. One of my best rounds so far. And that includes a mega blow-up on a par 5 where I registered an 11. So if I merely double-bogeyed that one I break 100. If my aunt had balls...... With ESC I get a 9 there so my handicap score is 101.
8/14 FIR Drives were typically around 250 with one (that barely missed the fairway) going 280. Have gotten a lot better at accurate drives and really supinating my wrists through impact.
37 putts (a 4-putt and two 3-putts in there)
3/18 GIR (big improvement here)
5 pars
3 bogeys
7 penalties!
1 sand stroke
I think the golf gods gave me a boost today since I got Dave Pelz' short game bible. I was faced with lob wedge shots all day long and were almost all very good results (for me). Tons of uneven lies and partial-swings but managed to hit them all well. That did so much for my score today.
Hole 1: Nice easy drive down the middle probably 230ish, then shank-pulled a 2i that bounced off a small damn maintenance box and reflected backwards and further left (leaving big trees between me and flag). Ended up triple-bogeying. Nice start.
Hole 2: 9i par 3. Hit a bit more of a line drive than I wanted but result was great as it didn't run too far up the sloped green and settled 7 feet from the hole a little above pin-high. Definitely birdie-able even for me but I managed to go about 4 inches right and 2 feet long. Lucky to save par.
Hole 3: Ripped my driver but pulled it and settled behind a bunch of trees. Left with a low-probability save attempt, but after determining that bumping it sideways to the fairway was also low-probability (and if I go far it's in water) I decide to really go for the green. Trees were about 20 feet in front of me with very low canopy maybe 12 feet. I grabbed my 2i and put the ball way up in my stance and kept my body fairly still and tried to really hit it with my arms (hardpan lie, too) and manage to strike it beautifully but just a bit too high and it catches a thick branch by about 6 inches and bounces back to me settling about 10 feet in front of me. Wonderful. Great strike, bad result.
So I hit the same shot again since I was 10 feet closer to freedom and blast this one low and hard and it catches some low-hanging leaves but blasts through them and I completely lost it. I figured it had to go straight but didn't see it land anywhere. At this point I'm pissed. Get in my cart and drive way up by the green not sure wtf to do then I see my ball way the hell up there short of the green with sand between me and the flag. I really knocked the hell out of this ball. Couldn't believe it went this far. Was now ecstatic. Amazing save. Lobbed onto green the 2-putted for double-bogey.
Hole 4: Drilled drive about 265 over water and in the fairway. Left with a nice easy AW yet I proceed to **** it up and contact it with clubface way open. Ball lofts way short and wayyy over to the right settling under a damn tree with a sand bunker between me and green and I'm only about 30 yards to flag. Wonderful. To make matters worse my LW it hitting a branch at the top of my swing. Somehow I end up lofting it just under the twig, just over the sand, and it scoots and settles about 15 feet from hole. Outstanding save shot for me. Couldn't believe it, then I sunk the 15-footer to save par. Life is good!
Hole 5: Rip drive about 255 over water but pull it bigtime. Hit provisional ball incase I can't find it. Hit that one about 260 but near the same spot but not as pulled (though it settled near a tree trunk). Ended up finding my original ball and played it from the other fairway. Fairway has just been watered and is all flat and soaken. Somehow I hit a 7i over the tree and ball settles just short of GIR. About a 25 foot putt from fringe uphill that I left 2 feet short. Tap in for par. Nice!
Hole 6: Par 5 ended up hitting GIR after a FIR then I guess a 2i and wedge but was barely on the bottom of the sloped green. Hit birdie putt about 30 feet and went about 5 feet long. Really wanted to save par so I focused more on the line than the speed and managed to crush it right and it rolls down to about 3 feet long. Awesome. Bogey putt lips out. **** **** **** **** **** Double-bogeying a GIR.
Hole 7: Good drive in the fairway but a bit right. This hole has water right and unplayable area left. I hit a 5i too far and since I was aiming a bit left it rolls into the unplayable area. I found the ball and pulled it out and took a penalty. Bad chip settles short. Another bad chip rolls to other edge of green. 2 putts to save triple-bogey. Dammit. Wheels starting to fall off.
Hole 8: I took an unnecessary risk with my drive trying to cut across the dogleg but clear over 200 yards of water. That didn't work. Laying 3 after drop and have a bunch of trees in my way. Hit a 6i I believe just over the trees on the other side of the water and it settled way up by the green. Terrific. Lobbed on then managed to 3-putt dammit.
Hole 9: ****ed up this par 3 but somehow escaped with less damage than I should have. 7i off the tee I don't close my clubface and ball goes like ****ing 40 yards with high loft and way over to the right. Lands on some hardpan mound and rolls down into a thick dry swamp area with tall growth. Probably snakes in there and ****. So I grab my SW and with ball like 8" above my feet I manage to smash through that shyte and it settles across the swamp under a tree again with sand between me and green (seen this already today). Again, I manage to hit a 30 yard lob wedge shot under the tree over the sand and it settles 10 feet from hole. Holy **** got lucky. 2 putted though for double.
Hole 10: I really messed up here. For some reason unknown to me, I cannot POSSIBLY hit a decent drive on this hole. Ever. Water runs all along left so my first drive is topped to the left like 50 yards and bounces in the water. Fantastic. So I re-tee hitting 3 and launch a high slice into the wind that ends up lost in that dry swamp area I was just talking about on hole 9. I take a mulligan here and just play my original ball with the penalty lying 3 but have no straight shot to hole. Lay up with a 6i then hit something short of green and end up with an 8. Really upset after this one. I'm never hitting driver here again. Just gonna tee up a 2i and play for bogey.
Hole 11: Par 5 driver lands in fairway. 2i slices quite a bit and lands in greenside bunker of another hole. Since I'm about 80 yards out I hit out of it like a fairway bunker and just catch the ball. Great shot barely doesn't make it over tree but rips through leaves and settles right of green. Screwed up my lob wedge but was on green after next shot, 2 putt for bogey.
Hole 12: 195 yard par 3 went short with a 4i but ended up too short. Beautiful LW to about 9 feet and saved par. Awesome!
Hole 13: This one always gives me fits but I hit my drive about 250 and dead straight and it couldn't have settled in a better area. Lob wedge falls just short of green but just over sand bunker. SW chip then 2 putt for bogey. Blah. Should have been an easy par and legit birdie chance. But I'm OK since this hole is surrounded by water and my scores generally are closer to 9 than 5.
Hole 14: OOB all along left. So I rip my driver way left over some water then into some trees. Awesome. Re-tee hitting 3 and do the same thing but not as left and it didn't travel over water before being lost. I basically just drop and say I'm hitting 6 from here, figuring I'm going to hit ESC anyway and nobody is behind me. 6th shot is a 2i that bounces left of straight and settles in more of this tall stuff. I go up and find it but it's unplayable and I know there are snakes over there so I pull it out and just hit "7" from here lol. Next shot is a 2i that I rip way down there and it settles right but well off the green. So I figure let's see if I can get up and down from here for my ESC max. Well I skull my wedge to across the green then do nothing with my SW chip and just pull it back and re-hit 9 from same spot even though it was on green. 9 settles decently on green but I 2-putt for 11-ish.
Hole 15: Par 3 8 iron well short. Decent LW but probably 25 feet from hole. 3-putt for double. Yawn.
Hole 16: Nice 250 or so yard drive in the fairway. Iron shot, I think 5i struck well but hooks a bit and falls in greenside bunker. Bunker is full of standing water and my ball is in the water part almost entirely submerged. Didn't know what to do here so I dropped it in the "dry" part of the bunker no closer to the hole without penalty. Took an illegal practice swing in there and that sand was soaked and I flung a bunch up onto the fringe and some on the green. Not good. So I figured I better not hit out of here at all since they probably don't want wet sand everywhere. So I dropped just outside of the bunker on a terrible lie but in grass (not sure what to do here??? Should I have played it out of this bunker?) SW chip onto green then 2 putt for bogey.
Hole 17: Another nice smooth drive in the fairway then a 7i approach that runs up on the GIR and settles pin high about 12 feet out. Really want to go for the bird here but leave it short (as I'd been doing all day). Par.
Hole 18: Had at least a club wind at my back swung nice and easy and managed to launch it 280 just right of the fairway. Had no idea I hit it that far and assumed I'd hit it 250 so I figured I'd have a 9i left to green. Get up to ball and somehow it still looked to me like a 9i but of course I hit it 30 yards past the hole. Should have been an easy PW or even an AW. **** up my lob wedge uphill but I'm left with an opportunity to chip. Go back to retrieve my SW and chip it to about 15 feet. Putting for bogey I miss the cup an inch to the right and it settles about 6" behind cup. Damn would have been a nice finish. Tap in for double bogey.
Sorry so long. It was like hot as **** today so nobody was out there and I took my time and took a lot of notes.
Could have easily broken 100 today. It would have been attributed to my accurate drives and quality approach shots. Compared to normal. Most of my drives were 250 and straight but it just happened to work out that of my 5 bad drives, 4 of them resulted in penalties which totaled 6! Only 1 bad drive didn't result in a penalty. I was able to play it from the other fairway. And my only other drive that didn't hit the FIR was on 18 which was just barely off and was like 280 yards. So my timing on my terrible drives was not good at all.
Anyway pretty excited that I beat my previous low at this course by 6 strokes. I did take some leeway with rules on a few holes so really I was more around 105-ish.
If anyone knows the ruling on a sand bunker full of water let me know. Do I play it as a lateral water hazard?? What about a ball that is not lost, but it in an unplayable trench full of trees, bushes and likely snakes? This happened twice today. I only took 1 penalty total on those though.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
Sounds like you were having a good time out there.
Here's what I found on the wet bunker:
Quote:
If your ball comes to rest in casual water within a bunker, you may drop without penalty at the nearest point of relief within the bunker, no nearer the hole. That applies no matter what the condition is of the rest of the bunker.
If the rest of the bunker is dry, great. But even if the entire bunker contains water, the same rule applies. According to the USGA Web site, "the player may drop the ball in the bunker at a point that provides maximum available relief (i.e., in 1 inch of water rather than 5 inches)." Alternatively, the player may take a one stroke penalty and drop outside the bunker.
In the rulebook, see Rule 25-1.
|
If you deemed the second ball unplayable you can drop it for one stroke obviously.

Nice recap, phb. I have a feeling that one of these days you're gonna pull an 88 out of nowhere. You drive the ball ridiculously well for someone with your handicap.

Thanks. This is what I figured the case to be. So I basically cheated a stroke here. As the rule states, I should have played it from the bunker. There was plenty of room with no standing water, it was just absolute mush though and I didn't feel it necessary to chunk all that nasty **** on the green. lol. FWIW, I gave myself an awful lie outside the bunker. But yeah it should have been a stroke.

Thanks! I realllly need to work on putting though. And still need to get much better with my lob wedge. I'm generally pleased with it but the problem is that with all the various lies around a green there are so many different shot types you really need to practice a ton to feel comfortable with.
I should slow things down and just start playing for GIR+1 and 2 putts from there. That isn't a huge improvement from where I'm at now but in terms of scoring, it sure is.
