I've tried quite a few different things. Not a big enough sample size at all for any method, but nothing's helped so far. I've tried going for a short run like 2 hours before my tee time to try and wake up and get my blood flowing. I've tried eating a ton of sugar and caffeine to get me wired. I've tried sleeping 12 hours. I've tried sleeping 0 hours. I've tried not even warming up. I've tried warming up for 2 hours. Basically everything I can think of. So now I just say **** it and do my standard 9 hours of sleep and 45 minutes of warmup and not care anymore.

I don't know if it's just me not practicing more than like 5 rounds all year that early or what. I feel so out of my element it's ridiculous. I even get nervous that early sometimes. Other events that start later, like around 11 or later, I feel confident and don't get affected by nerves at all. I just can't focus enough to control my brain in the morning.

So who knows. Probably just have to practice playing that early more often. But that would mean willingly waking up around 5:30, which as a poker player will never happen. I'm programmed to wake up no earlier than noon unless something urgent makes me.

can def relate to all that. I rarely play early because of this. One morning last year I did like 20 min of yoga before I left the house and def felt better. I have no great reason for not trying it more other than the extra sleep.

Any time I've played a course with aerated greens they've always told me before I paid for my round. Not a problem at all - it needs to be done.

Played at Whisper Creek in the burbs of Chicago yesterday.

I was pretty tilted by the course. 3 of the par 5s have some stupid hazard or obstacle about 280-300 out that really forces you to hit 3i or 3w off the tee, depending on wind. Pretty frustrating to be handcuffed by these stupid designs.

43-X. Quit after 14 holes. Thought we were going to fly around the course, there were very few cars in the lot. Didn't see another golf until the fifth hole ... and then we hit the ****ing wall. It took 45 minutes to play 5 holes, then it took 3 hours to play 9 more.

I've been experimenting with a significantly weaker left hand and it seems to be going OK.

On the 9th hole (a shortish par 5) I hit a good drive leaving 230 in. Hit a dead perfect cut driver on a line but it got caught up in some long grass just short of the green. Promptly shanked my chip into a bunker, blasted long, shanked another chip and 3 putted for triple. FAIL. Shanked chip shots the rest of the way. Going to need to work that out before playing again.

As it turns out there were several slow ass groups out there, plus the twosome that was behind us played the old "we'll just cut in front of you while you're getting a hot dog at the turn" trick. ****ers. I hate to admit it but I greatly enjoyed the fact that the foursome in front of them didn't let them through until 14.

We looked for an open hole driving in but there wasn't enough of a gap anywhere to make it worthwhile. Just a lot of slow slow Sunday golfers.

I don't think it's ever taken me long enough to get a dog/gatorade at the turn for the group behind to finish #9 and tee off on #10 before I got out there.

What is socially acceptable here? I wouldn't expect people to wait on me if I'm in getting a snack if they are ready to tee up 10 but I don't really know. I haven't logged many rounds and I guess it's never affected me yet.

Just played 9 today but since nobody plays on Mondays at my course i decided to play 2 balls. Shot 35 (1 under) and 41 (5 over). The 35 ball was just my best score on each hole and the 41 was the worse of the 2 on each hole. Since this is the 1st time i've done this, i'm wondering if this is "good". I'm a 5 Handicap FWIW.

Edit: I didn't play them as a scramble either. If i drove one in the left rough, and one in the right, i would play the one in the left and walk over to the 2nd ball and play that one, etc...

So I played 16 holes, theres the South/West/North course. Apparently we played hole #1 on south, went under the bridge which we weren't supposed to, and played #'s 2-9 on West.

We realized it on hole 4 when it was a par 5 and not a par 3. And me and my friend have played this course 3 times now. WTF lol. AND theres a sign for each hole we just didn't even look at.

So anyway playing those first 9 was only +1. Not bad seeing as I had a double on #7. Next 7 holes was +3 but THOSE GOD DAMN MOSQUITO's are terrible right now. We coulda played all 18 but there was no way, we had to stop.

Drives were great, hit 11 FIRS outa the 16 and 9 GIRS outa those 11. Putting for once kinda saved me and got lucky. On a par 3 I hit it on the fringe about 10 feet from hole, blasted it only to be saved by the hole. It skipped about 3 inches in the air before falling. My friend didn't like that as he saved par by hitting outa the sand 25 yards out after a terrible tee shot. I probably woulda gone 10 feet past only to 3 putt lol.

I'm a beginner and was doing this quite a bit until discussion on here convinced me that you'll pretty much always be inflating your scores playing 2 balls. Then I started playing one ball and realized I was much fresher even towards the end of the front 9. Crazy difference on the back, mind you I always walk and it's been very hot when I play.

When I play 2, basically keep score independently like 2 different golfers so you'd have ended up with a 37/39 or so. Plus, when you keep it that way you can always look back and tally your "best" score later. I typically play one ball conservatively and one ball aggro, more "go for it" type shots. Often the conservative would wind up being the only score I'd claim in that case

fwiw I think those scores are quite good for a 5 hdcp playing best and worst ball, and it implies to me that you are probably a somewhat low variance player

Played a course on Sunday I hate, shot 52-50 for a 102 (par 71)

Kept the Driver under control (no tops, duck hooks etc) all out there reasonable including 2 bombs on the back, 1 where I left 160 on a par 5 470... of course I made a dumb decision and toed a 7iron because I tried to crush it and pushed it right into water. Got pissed dropped another ball right there and hit a perfect smooth 6 iron to 20ft then 2 putted for bogey. Also on the 370 par 4 18th I hit it to 70yds, hit a long ass bump 30ft passed the hole then 2 putt parred.

My putting was atrocious after coming off the terrible greens from Saturday I hate 4-5 3putts all from long distance though and didnt make anything within 10ft til the 14th or 15th hole when I back to back 1 putted.

Its weird but I should be content with 102, and my ball striking and driver was very good but it didnt reflect in my score

..I have finished 2nd and 1st in my little golf league the last 2 weeks, the 2nd place put me in the playoffs with a big move and last week moved me up but I missed the next round. Too little to late basically, and missing 2 weeks because all the other members were playing far away or when I couldnt cost me.

104, putting was complete sh*t as usual. Beat my dad by one stroke though after he stuck 2 shots into the water and got a 10 on the par 5 18th.

The rule here is you always ask. Mostly you get waved through sometimes people come running with a cup of tea and a bacon butty, tee off and enjoy their refreshment on the walk to the green. No ones been a big enough dick to refuse and sit there eating.

Subforum newb here. Been reading some of the threads lately. Took to heart the practice routine in dagolfdoc's thread and been working on my short game. I have been a consistent 88-95 type scorer the past 5 years or so but have shot in the high 70s/low 80s 20 years ago when I had nothing but time.

Shot an 81 yesterday. Just wanted to barge and thank dagolfdoc for taking the time to write all of that out.

Yeah i don't make a ton of birdies, and don't make doubles very often, so i guess i'm what you would call a low variance golfer. I felt like i played well, but had no real way of knowing what 9 "normal" holes would've been. Maybe 38 or so. Thanks.

Only hit 4 fairways and 6 greens, but 81 was about the worst I could have shot. I think the longest putt I made was from 6 feet. I hit 3-wood on three different occasions, and mis-hit it a different way each time. Alignment continues to be an issue, but otherwise mostly pleased with the ball-striking.

Played 9. Had a breakthrough on the range and was able to take it onto the course.

Four putted the first hole for a double. +2
Par 2.
Bogey 3.

Played the last 6 holes in three under to get back to an even 36. Freakin' finally.
