Edit: I didn't play them as a scramble either. If i drove one in the left rough, and one in the right, i would play the one in the left and walk over to the 2nd ball and play that one, etc...
I'm a beginner and was doing this quite a bit until discussion on here convinced me that you'll pretty much always be inflating your scores playing 2 balls. Then I started playing one ball and realized I was much fresher even towards the end of the front 9. Crazy difference on the back, mind you I always walk and it's been very hot when I play.
When I play 2, basically keep score independently like 2 different golfers so you'd have ended up with a 37/39 or so. Plus, when you keep it that way you can always look back and tally your "best" score later. I typically play one ball conservatively and one ball aggro, more "go for it" type shots. Often the conservative would wind up being the only score I'd claim in that case
