Walking straight on to the tee is something I do way too often thanks to the groups I play with. I like a nice warmup.

On weekends, if I can help it, I never show up and walk to the tee. I always aim for a good hour+ warmup. Unfortunately, I finished work at 3 yesterday, half a half-hour drive to the course and teed off at 3:50.

Bleh 42 and 42 for 84 again. Was going great until my tee shot on 17 hit the tree and came down at the start of the fairway. Took a Triple Bogey 7 . Missed an 8 footer on 18 for birdie to break my record. Sigh.

To top it off, I could burnt alive out there.

Cool, Co.Sligo is my local, and along with that we have Castle Dargan and Enniscrone so awesome courses round here. Never been as far up as Armagh, Murvagh in Donegal is the furtherest north I've played.

wee a bunch of mc's

My family is all from Belfast, I was lucky enough to get to experience Portrush last year in the summer.. However, I have to say, my favourite course over there is Belvoir Park just outside Belfast City.

Very nice, what did you think of Portrush? It's on my must play list this year, but I'm only learning to drive at the moment so once I have that out the way hoping to get around to alot more courses.

tldr version: i enjoyed it but thought it was overrated.

In 2007 I was home for the death of my grandmother in August and returned for a real vacation in September. I had a tee-time booked for Portrush but an uncle of mine talked me out of it. Told me it was too hard, not that great, etc etc. So he took me to his private (maybe semi private, i can't remember) golf course somewhere north east of belfast. He told me the course had the best greens in europe that year. Well, much to my chagrin we got there and found fully aerrified and sanded greens, it was horrible.

When I returned last year I was determined to play Portrush, so I booked a round, rented a car, got a caddie, the whole 9. Before I left Toronto I was playing with my a-game, unfortunately I must have left it at the terminal because I caught a case of the shanks and played some of the worst golf of my life when I got there. Even the caddie couldn't look at me when I was hitting.

brag: I did manage to hit an amazing shot to Calamity their signature par 3 on the back 9 and parred it, that was the highlight of my trip.

I enjoyed the scenery, the ocean front views were just some of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen on a golf course. However, I must be spoiled by the conditions at North American golf courses and was suprised to find such a rugged place. Not that the conditions weren't good, but it felt a little more rustic than over here.

I also got paired up with two Americans who I sort of regret playing with. One of the guys made it quite clear that he didn't want to play with me. He barely engaged in conversations with me, never applauded any of the few good shots I hit that day, just a major douchebag. The other guy was quite nice and joined me for lunch afterwards, but his friend made for a terrible playing partner.

Also, finding out from the caddy that the local membership rate is 900 pounds for a year and I paid 175 (i think) for one round, kinda left a bad taste in my mouth too.

Belvoir Park on the other hand is one of the most well manicured and beautiful parkland golf courses I have ever played in my life. (I've played it like 4 times over the last few years) I actually got paired up with the Club Captain the last time I was there and him and his buddy were a great pair to play with. I was so tilted when I found out that Rory McIlory was there the day before, when I was at Portrush. It's apparently one of his favourite courses and he hung out in the clubhouse for a while afterwards too. I would have loved to have met him.

Played a new Greater Toronto Offering today, Cardinal's Redcrest. Cardinal owns this really huge piece of property but they have a few of the worst golf courses on them, until this beauty. It only played 6700 from the "red" tees, get it, cardinal? lol But it was really enjoyable. Course was in outstanding condition, the greens were much too firm for my liking however.

Shot 85.

Nice trip report. I presume that rustic feel is what makes links golf. Might check out Belvoir Park, cheers.

Shot a 46-44 = 90 today at common ground golf course in aurora, colorado including my lifetime first ACE on number 12, a 191 yard affair where I hit a really nice five iron to the front of the green, where it bounced twice and rolled right in. Much shouting and carrying on ensued and I made the cart girl's day by buying many rounds.

grats!

Played Copetown Woods today, one of my favourites. It's a nice relatively flat links-style course with some absolutely perfect greens.

Shot 40/43
7 fairways
8 gir
34 putts

Congratulations.

People in this forum seem to be having a lot of luck making holes in one. Color me jealous!

42-48-90. So very bad. 2/13 fairways, 8/18 greens, 41 putts

Horrible tee shots. Bad chipping. Total putting fail. Zero one putts. Zero up and downs.

Two memorable moments of FAIL:

On the hardest hole on the front nine ( a tight 430 yard par 4), I hit an awful drive that hooked onto a mound about 160 yards from the tee, directly behind a very large tree. I could either punch out backwards - even sideways was blocked by thick brush - or I could try and hit a low severe slice. Since we were playing a team game and I needed to have a chance at being in the hole, I went with option B. Didn't execute it very well and I ended up in the trees 220 out but with a nice opening. Had to keep it low, so I hit a perfect 1 iron which ended up four feet from the cup.

And then I missed the putt.

Argh.

On the second to last hole I nearly hit another miracle shot. 420 yard par 4, I duffed my drive short and nearly into the trees. Just killed a 3 hybrid, hooking it out and around the trees, over a pond and into a greenside bunker.

From there I half-shanked my bunker shot, it bounced just off the green ... and I managed to lose my ball. There are a couple of mounds with longish grass but nothing too bad. Couldn't find it.

That was a first.

98 (49-49) from 6498/71.6/128, Calgary Elks Club.

Pretty nice course, good condition. Haven't tallied up the stats but I only hit a couple fairways and a couple greens. Good grief though, my short irons were just shank-a-rific. Story of most holes was a pretty solid drive and then shank several approach shots all over the place, left/right and thin. Though I'm really starting to get decent out of the sand, so that's a positive to take out of it.

Fun story: Played on Thursday and my course was pretty baked out and the greens were just getting ridiculously fast. So I hit an 8 iron on the 5th hole to about 10 feet. I look over the putt and I can see that it is going to break about 10+ feet from left to right and be extremely fast. I am straight left and barely touch it and it is on a perfect line, slowly lips out, and proceeds 20 feet down a hill to where my buddies are. I'm out so I drain the par putt obviously. Both of my friends putted approximately 5 times, and it came back to their feet every single time, miss long, short, right, left, the ball ended up 30 feet from the hole every single time. Never seen anything like that.

83 (42-41) today. Short course 5907, hit quite a few 3 irons off the tee. Could have been in the 70's if I could make some putts. Missed more than my fair share of birdie putts from 6, 8, 10ft with only 1 three putt. First time I had played this course so I'll take it. So damn humid here in Cincinnati.

45-40-85. 5/13 fairways, 8/18 greens, 38 putts. 1 birdie, 3 doubles.

Found some things on the back, up to that point it was another brutal discouraging day. The only bad hole I had on the back was the result of another shanked bunker shot. WTF.
