Went to Brechtel Park today with a friend of mine who had played a bit when he was a kid, but was otherwise a total newbie. We go to the driving range to warm up and he has to ask me how to grip the club. However, he's a very good athlete--I play cricket with him and he's one of the best batsmen on the team, so he should have the hand-eye coordination and the strength, right? And sure enough he goes straight for the driver and after slicing the hell out of a few he manages to bomb a bunch of balls. He wasn't very accurate, but he could hit it well despite having a totally horrendous set-up. He called it an "open" stance, but that didn't seem quite accurate. His feet were pretty much square with each other but his body was turned probably 30 degrees to the left of where he was aiming. And yet he managed to hit it straight a respectable amount of the time. Even reached a par-3 in regulation and two-putted. I kept telling him to hit 3-wood or 5-wood but he kept heading for the driver and taking mulligan after mulligan until he hit it straight.

He even had a pretty decent chipping/pitching game, but he couldn't putt worth a damn. I friggin' hate natural athletes.

As for me, we forgot to grab a scorecard so I didn't bother keeping track. My best shot was a chip from the fringe. My friend was tending the flagstick, and the flag was stuck in the bottom of the cup, so the entire cup came out. My ball was rolling a little too fast, but was dead-on and went into the dirt hole where the cup once was. Probably would have bounced in and out had the cup still been there. I know I managed at least one bogey on a par 3, but didn't do much else well.

94 at west mid for 34 Stableford points.

Gave my new (new to me) irons a run out.
I struck the ball poorly for the most part but only lost one ball. I had the one blow up hole but did get lucky with some horrible miss hits staying in play.
7/11 fairways, 32 putts (from on the green) 3 pars, 6 bogies, 8 doubles, 1 blob.

This reminds me of the guy who I went to school with who shot 83 the very first time he ever played. Same guy who got a 1600 on his SAT. And went to Harvard. And played football there. And ran a 4.4x40. And whose brother played in the little league world series. And whose dad is the multiple club champion at our course. But yeah besides that, he ain't all that special.

Same thing happened to me. I went out this afternoon and got in 9, shot 43. The warmer weather kind of screwed me up, I was hitting everything at least 10 yards longer. I missed at least three puts I should have had. Oh well, at least the weather was perfect.

played back tees from silverstone, had terrible time on the front, was hitting floaters with every club, midway through the back i had the idea to sit flatter on my feet, and instantly hit the ball further than i ever have.

48-40 (88), finished with 5 straight pars.

37-40-77.

What a difference a day makes. Striped the ball. Only got in trouble twice and had a nice window for recovery both times. Chipped decently. If I could putt at all this is a 72.

Five bogeys: 3 putt after charging a tough pin placement. Missed 5 footer after a stellar recovery shot and decent chip. Failed to get up and down after missing the green from 75 ****ing yards. Legit bogey after fanning a 9 iron some 35 yards off line. Failed to get up and down from 3 yards off the ****ing green.

Left three birdie putts one revolution short dead in the center. Several other chances. Nothing dropped.

Whatever. It was almost 70 degrees. And I got a free beer thanks to a hole in one. Five star day and if it turns out to be the last round of the season a pretty good way to end.

played in a season ending 18-hole 4-man scramble. all players (except me) were from a summer clinic for beginners. i tagged along because i was helping the pro a tiny bit. the teams were actually rather even, plus i haven't practiced in about a month and a half.

brag: 41+36=77. beat the other team by 1. got some comped round coupons, and got 2 closest to the pin, good for some range tokens.
beat: played like ass the first 6 holes. my uncontrollable slice is back, kept fatting iron shots. didn't hit a single driver on the back 9, opting for the 3w. no birdies at all.
variance: sank a couple long putts. turned out to be important.

I see this a lot. Is it just me that thinks it is way easier to hit a driver? I struggle pretty mightily with my fairway woods.

the driver is a bit much for me, 9.5*. i used to be able to control it, but the rust was definitely showing yesterday.

fwiw, i also struggle with the fairway woods off the deck, but i am able to shape the shot a lot easier, as well as hit it straight. when teeing off, i put it up a little high, like 0.25"-.5" off the ground. results in a great high ball flight.

I have the R9 15 degree 3-wood, and I can't hit it off the deck that well, mostly low stingers. However, when I tee it up I have the same result, a nice high ball flight which I can control fairly easily.

i demo'ed both burner and R9. IMO, R9 is much tougher to hit, and the results are not really any better than the burner (length, control). i wouldn't be surprised if you can in fact hit the burner off the deck right now. i had 2 tries at it yesterday and failed both times, but i am rusty as **** right now.

Yeah, it's kind of discouraging, but I'm holding on to it for the purpose of having it on a tougher tee shot right now. I saw that the burner hybrid/fairways just got discounted, I was thinking about replacing my hybrid with one of those to give me a little more distance and possibly better control from the fairway.

I probably need a lesson to get it to where I can hit the R9 solidly off the deck.

Got out this morning and shot 42 (Par 35). Didn't really putt well at all, the greens at the course I play up here are pretty ****ing hard. Down hill puts will take off unless you barely tap the ball, and I just can't get my long putting down, even with practice.

Before the round, I was able to get my 3-wood going, hitting it pretty perfect off the deck. I just stood a little further away from the ball and made sure not to break my left arm and boom! I was hitting it long and straight. I did the same thing with my driver and hit it well on the range for the most part. Then of course I get out there and start push fading everything until the last hole where I was able to bomb a regular fade which was nice. Still can't quite get it together, but I'm getting closer. Ended up parring the last two, with a nice sandy on a long uphill par 3.

Played the Club Championship today. Royally ****ed up at the beginning. 3-putted 3 of the first 4 holes, was 4 over after 4 made a few pars bogeyed the last 2 on front for 42. Then 3 putt bogey on 10 and 11, then made 3 birdies to shoot 35 on the back. 42-35. I don't 3 putt, I'm in 2nd place for the club championship, albeit 4 strokes back.

Played in a 2 man scramble with toughman pins. Ran crazy good with six birdies, but we also made 3 doubles. Ended up +2.

Another 60 degree day in November FTW.

Shot 84 today despite 3 or so lost balls and a few duffed drives.

I almost chipped in on 4 seperate occasions, and then finally on a par 3 I flew my tee shot over the green into water and chipped in my shot from the ball-drop for a 3.

Can't believe I just golfed on November 14th and it was an absolutely unreal day.

played silverstone in the wind, played the 1ups, not enough game / distance for that course @ back when its windy.

45-37 (82)

forgot how to swing on the front, started relasing the club on the back and hit the driver well enough to make up for rest of mistakes.
