And whats with the poles in the back of the greens..I could have sworn Ive seen that in a couple different pics over the years.

Such a fantastic place. Definitely in my top 3 of places I have played, very easily could be number 1 if i really thought about it.

If anyone is interested http://www.wgt.com is hosting the virtual US open on oakmont this year. Full stroke play opens June 1, right now you can play a closest to the hole competition on Oakmont tho.

Maybe the poles are to hold the scoreboards? That's the only thing I can think of, but I don't know why they wouldn't just take the poles out too. Possibly they're stuck in concrete, but you can't tell from the pictures.

I used to do the external audit for Oakmont a couple of years back, including the year they hosted the U.S. Open. I was there working a few weeks before the Open (the used to put us up in a room that overlooked the ninth green) and in two successive groups, I saw Roethlisberger and Vijay play. If I didn't quit a couple of weeks later, I would have gotten to play for free.

not sure how fast they are now. a little bumpy and rough due to some maintenance and uneven grass growth. white pole is a flag pole.
