What shaft flex should I use? What shaft flex should I use?

I'm thinking about buying a new set of irons (not sure what yet). I know my driver swing speed is 100-105 mph. Does that mean I should use stiff shafts for all of my clubs? Do I need to get on a launch monitor to really know what to buy?

Yea go for a fitting. I paid 105 bucks to get fit for a set of irons and the results were great. Picked up a few yards, better trajectory, and gained the confidence that I'm hitting exactly the right clubs for my swing.

wow, fittings are expensive in the states. I paid 30 euros ( about 40 dollars ) a couple of months ago for a fit for my irons.

My driver swing speed is right around there, I use stiff. Extra stiff would be a little too crazy for you I think.

how far do you hit your driver into a 10 mph headwind?

how far do you hit your 5 iron? pitching wedge?

I'm just starting to get back into golf after playing very little over the last five years. Back then PW was about 135, 5 iron was about 190. Now everything is probably a club shorter. I have no idea about driver into a 10 mph headwind. Is that really something that people know?

OK, thanks. I figured as much. My only concern was that my current irons have regular shafts (I bought them without any kind of research or fitting when I was in high school 16 years ago) and I've always hit them well.

What kind of shafts are they? Curious to know brand and model as well.

You don't need to play a stiff just because of your SS. How much you load the shaft is more important. Typically, faster tempo players require stiffer shafts while the opposite is true for guys with buttery tempos.

Not all stiffs are equal, and the weights and characteristics vary greatly. Reg in one might feel like stiff in another. The heavier shafts generally play stiffer. Length and swing weight also effect the flex. My SS is a little higher than yours and I played regular flex wilson fat shafts throughout HS with good results. Sure, blindly picking any stiff shaft you see will allow you to hit a golf ball, but there are a lot of variables involved if you want the optimal fit.

A fitting probably wouldn't be the worst idea right now, but you could get around it if you have any idea what you're doing. Demo days are great because you can hit the same club with a bunch of different shafts and flexes. Hitting them in store is another good way to gauge the different feels.

The current irons are Top-Flite Tour Mid-Size with R-300 True Temper Dynalite Gold shafts.

you need to be just as concerned with the weight of your shaft imo. get a fitting

How old are you? Your swing speed really doesn't make much difference like everyone else thinks... Is your transition from the top smooth or do you jerk it down from the top creating extra lag in the shaft...

These are more questions that you need answered...

I'm 33 and I'd say my transition is smooth, but I haven't watched myself swing in a long time. I should probably do something about that.
