Related question... I've never been fitted but if I am going to drop $2-500 on a driver I am thinking about it. There is a Club Champion near me that charges $150 for a driver fitting. Seems steep.

Has anyone had a fitting at Club Champion (or elsewhere)? Can you tell them which driver models you most want to try ahead of time? Does the shaft really make that much difference (as a 15hc I always assumed the stock shafts were fine for me).

Between the $150 for the fitting and then whatever the charge is for a custom shaft, I'm wondering if it's worth it.

The shaft makes all the difference. Having a driver with the wrong shaft is like driving a Ferrari with a 4 cylinder. Different shafts in the same driver can cause a difference in backspin, launch angle, ball flight, etc. And by difference I mean a big difference. That's what the fitter is going to do. Find the shaft that fits your swing to get the most out of the driver for you.

Yes, yes and yes to what Suit said.

Having access to a few dozen shafts and Trackman in my fitting was all the difference in the world. What I thought I would be fit into was not even close to what I ended up with.

Club Champion is a very good fitter with locations around the country. I have heard nothing but good reviews from everyone I have talked to that has gone there.

Don't you usually get the fitting for free if you also buy the club from the fitter?

That's how it's been with all (2) fittings I've done for clubs.

Bought this driver a month ago and it was $299, talked to the salesman about it for a while and he said Taylor made set the prices. So unless your buying it used I don't think ur gonna find one for $200. But even for $299 I think it's a great buy, the driver is awesome.

Yeah the price is set by taylormade, but they'll lower it over time.

The newest drivers on the market today are all very comparable performance-wise. If you like one with adjustable loft/lie/face then stick with Titleist or TM IMO. If that doesn't matter to you then options are endless. Honestly today's top line drivers can barely outperform the top line from 3 years ago. Slight improvement on off-center hits is about all you'll see. Maybe 2-5 yards in distance at best.

Yes, I meant used, but in near-mint condition usually.

But the key is to get your driver fit, and usually you can only get fit for this year's model. So while a 2015 or 2016 driver is most likely to be similar performance-wise, you won't be able to get it fit and therefore can't necessarily realize that performance.

Had some shop credit so I ordered the 816 H2 19* hybrid. Was fitted for this about 6-8 months ago. Replacing the 915h 18* that I currently game.

what about going to top independent club fitter and paying $100 to $200 for their detailed assessment? would probably figure out a ton of things and then you could look for that in purchasing used or new discounted elsewhere.

of course, you get into same problem you/i both mentioned. to get all the specs you probably need new clubs at list price - or near list.

can top golf shops easily measure lie angle? or is it something that is only really exact from factory floor? i know they can change it.

Fitters like Club Champion will have prior generation equipment as well.

On lie angle if they have a machine that can check it (like an Edwin Watts or a Golf Galaxy). I'm not so sure someplace like a Dick's would have that.

I want a rangefinder but seriously guys I've tried to use my friends and my hands will not stay steady enough. Kind of a problem.

Maybe his sucks? Mine doesn't need to be absolutely still to get a good reading. Also you definitely get better at it after you've used it a bit.

If you ride in a cart a lot try steadying it on the front windshield. Also, I agree, you learn to steady yourself after a bit.

Anyone playing the Taylor Made Spider Tour putter that DJ and Day use? I swear it seems like about 50 percent of the players on both euro and pga are playing these now. I messed around with one at golfsmith and really liked it i just have a tough time dropping 300 for a putter.

standalone gps units

i loved my sg2. i hate skygolf though so i'll probably look at the garmins once i finally get off my ass and play irl again. have not researched them in years, but i was happy then, so they can only be better now.

no interest in using my phone although the newer phones are likely just as good as a gps.

I still prefer an exact number over a general guesstimate. I love the gps for distance to front/back or hazards, etc. but for the number to the flag I would never want anything but a laser rangefinder.

My distance perception isn't great, so I'm definitely on team rangefinder*, it's annoying to get pin depth wrong.

* don't own one, so I mooch distances from those that do. I rarely bother asking the guys with the GPS watches.

Also, it's been a long time since I've purchased any new equipment. Demo days are coming up, anyone have any tips on hot new hybrids I ought to check out?

Agreed. I had Garmin watch and ended up selling it. Using both would actually be ideal but if it's a one or the other thing rangefinder wins for me easily.

I'm interested in getting one with a slope finder also, although I know they are illegal in tournaments etc. Just figure if I used one all the time my ability to incorporate slope into total yardages without the laser could drastically improve. Tough to pull the $300+ trigger though.

Needed a spiked black shoe to go along with my spikeless black ones. $80 on RBG.

there is such a robust market for used clubs in 'like new' condition. just use the intuitive google search terms and you can shave at least $100 off of that price.
