I'd say just get a sweet setup going in your house, nice big room for it, big monitor screen, top notch golf mat etc etc etc, then just get something like a Skytrak for 2k. Then maybe one day if your a scratch player looking to improve, then go ahead and fire 20k+ at a trackman and it might be worth it.
I'd like the upward mobility of ultimately getting good since it's pretty likely I get to a single digit handicap some day due to the amount of free time and tendency to get addicted. I guess it's pretty easy to switch out if I just wanna upgrade and only 2k is the sunk cost?

What's better about these Golfzon/Trackman ones vs Skytrak? The graphics? Courses offered? Swing statistics on spin/distance? Accuracy on those stats?

I'm looking for a travel bag. Any suggestions? Tips? Hard top or soft top? Any other necessary features?

Im looking for max protection of my clubs obv, but want something light and easy to throw in a trunk.

Picked up a set of Cleveland 588 CBs on eBay and some x100s from WRX to try out. Setting up a backup bag (LOL like I need one).

Also found a set of Macgregor VIPs for $30 and a Vokey SM5 new in plastic for $40 at Play it Again Sports.

Max protection is a hard case but they DO NOT fit in any trunk. When I travel I have to throw it in the back seat of the car or get an SUV as a rental. Another disadvantage to a hard case is the weight. My shoulder want's to separate after rolling it for more than a few hundred feet. Also when I put my cart bag in it I have to limit what else that goes into the bag to keep it under the 50lb max.

Maybe look into one of those cases that is hard on top???

First travel bag was a Founders Club totally soft shell. Served the purpose for 1-hour flights to and from university throughout the years but when I did more travelling with the clubs, I bought an Ogio bag, I think it is the Mutant one. Has been very good thus far.

Pros are it has a hard shell base which means it can take more abuse. I found the soft shell Founders Club one was starting to split at the base. Also the hard shell base means better wheels and wheeling. It has a decent amount of cushion to the soft shell and good support. Overall it's a 4/5, I'm not sure what else I can think of to not give it a 5 but I'm a pessimist.

As for hard shells, you can get those very small compact hard shell travel cases that also double as a golf bag to play with, one of my companions had it with him on our recent trip to Scotland. Seemed quite functional. Overall a full hard shell travel bag does not seem very functional unless you are really worried about damage to your clubs.

Driver?
Irons?
Wedges?
Important apps/tech/gadgets?
Spikeless shoes - I ordered a pair of Nike spikeless because my shoes sucked aesthetically and dealing with spikes is annoying
My advice is get a new driver (a new to you but used driver like the R15 or Titleist 910 or something ~$100) and then get lessons from a good teacher.

Your game will improve so much more from a good set of lessons than any equipment can do for you. The driver will help though.

Always wondered what a backup bag was all about. Is it in case you have a ****ty round and chuck your regular bag into the pond? Or if you piss off the wife and she pawns your clubs or something?

I've got a hard shell because I'm paranoid about my clubs getting damaged. It works great but definitely not easy to get in and out of car trunks, or even back seats if its a small car.

I have a backup bag, for 2 reasons:

#1. If something happens to my current setup, I'm not completely SOL

#2. If I have visitors (from out of town), or friends/family who want to play a round but haven't committed to the game and want to try it out; they can use my second set as opposed to renting

I might look into getting heavier weights for it. It has a Scotty grip on it currently. I will give it a shot and if I don't like it, I will be putting a Super Stroke grip on it. Sounds sacrilegious, but I might have to do it.

My backup bag is the byproduct of buying stuff and being too lazy to eBay the excess.

Yeah basically just an excuse to have more stuff. Something I'll take on the road cause I don't want my main bag lost by the airlines.

I finally hit the m2 driver yesterday. Damn that thing goes far.

Got a 10.5deg SLDR 430 driver in pretty good shape for cheap. Definitely more distance on average than my R9, backspin isn't killing my distance like it was with the R9. Caught one on the screws for a 280yd drive, while the not great ones still went 245+ rather often.

bought two pair of FJ dryjoy casuals in the colors shown below for ~$60 each. played my first round in them on wednesday and they are really comfy and have great grip.
i've worn FJ dryjoys for years (other than a pair of first generation nike air bandons to combat the oregon winter rain)...FJ's fit/lasts are consistent from year to year and they just seem to fit my foot the best. i play a lot of early morning rounds when the ground's wet from either dew or sprinklers and dryjoy has always treated me right. i am curious to see how long the soles last since you can't swap out spikes...really the only potential downside.

edit: does anyone have experience with FJs cascade cleated boot? they have a face only a mother could love, but if they work and are truly waterproof what the hell...your rain pants are covering most of it up.

Arrived today, new grip installed, ready for the range tomorrow. Also put a different grip on the Scotty, hated it, got a bigger Scotty grip from my playing partner for free. Installed and ready to go.

Not really about gear buying, but I got a swing/equipment evaluation today. My 51° from my set measured in at 54°, and my 58° LW I got preowned a long time ago came in at a cool 64°, no wonder I hate using it so much, I was launching it 56° or higher at times.

I'm a pretty average guy (5' 11", with arms I feel are normal or a bit long), but he found that my irons were too flat and 0.75" too short. Irons were also too flexy, they're marked as S but bent more like R. I have a 80+ or even 85+ mph swing with the 7i, and I push 105 with the driver. Lots of stuff to consider, but I got my irons/wedges in for loft/lie change for now.

I have the Ping travel bag and I'm a big fan. It stand up by itself and rolls easily in any direction while standing, plus it folds up neatly for storage. It has an extra pocket one the outside and a few netted ones inside for keeping loose items and it's very Tough and durable too. Very good product.

I thought club glove was the no brainer recommendation for travel bags, have they been eclipsed recently?

Price on that one? Looks damn good to me. Whenever my hard case fails I might go in this direction.

I want an M2. Been demo'ing one and consistently hit it further than my 913D2. Have a PGA friend who said he'll give me new one with my spec choices for $275. Think the price will be cheaper come winter?

No chance it's going to drop that low. I'd jump on it. If you want slightly used I would look here though:

Replaced my R9 9.5* driver with a used R15 TP 12*. Seems pretty good on my first 2 dozen balls (snuck on a hole on my home course), including a couple 270+ knuckle balls high on the face and a 260yd soft draw off the toe side. Most impressive was the misses. My semi slices stayed on or close to fairway with respectable distance, and the bottom of face shots got high enough to still be respectable. Very impressed, and I haven't even adjusted it yet

I made that exact same change last year R9 to R15 12*. I naturally hit low drives so the increased loft added about 20 yards. Recently my swing changed and I started naturally hitting my ball higher. I ended up adjusting the club to 11*. The club works great at 11* for me.

Its very simple to adjust the weights. Put some tape on the face. Hit a bunch balls with the tape. Use the weights to centre your impact zone. You want them as close together as you can get them with all your contact points still between them. If you are very accurate with your points of contact on the face, you would have the weights closer to each other. The less accurate you are, the further apart they should be. I was told not to worry about the fade/draw. Just get the weights behind the ball.
