Re: Wedge Talk

You have a 48/54/60 right now? That's probably good for now. Does your 54 have the bounce of a sand wedge?

You're probably not ready for a 64 degree if the most-lofted wedge you've used is a 48. I think 64s are for people who are very good with their wedges and that club has an insane amount of loft. Don't know how helpful adding a 52 would be if you've got 48 and 54, either.

You may stick with those 3 and get used to them and see where you feel like you've still got holes.

Sorry if you already know this but the key with half and 3/4 wedges is to swing smaller, not easier.

A lot of pros use a clock technique that pelz has championed. Basically all wedge shots have full wrist **** and arms swing back to different position on a clock, looking front on. So if you swing normally but atop your baxkswing when your arms are parallel to the ground, that us a 9 I o'clock swing as your arms point to 9 o clock when looking front on. This should produce a 3/4 wedge shot. You can practice all different back swing lengths and get all sorts of distances out of each wedge

Most people would be better off taking their bag space up with hybrids or rescue clubs compared to wedges.
Sorry, but this is a blanket statement that is horribly inaccurate for a lot of golfers. Yes, it is accurate for quite a few golfers as well. But the point is it isn't near this simple to determine. What (you think) is good for you, isn't necessarily good for everybody else.

OP, at your level 3 wedges is enough. You should have decent yardage gaps between your wedges now and will be able to hit a variety of shots. You have no need for a 64 for absolute certainty. Now just put the hours in learning how to use them properly.

Last fall when I went from 3 wedges to 4, I may have picked up as much as 1 shot per round. Mostly because I reduced my gaps from 20 to 15 yards making distance control much easier.

Re: Wedge Talk

When I watch pros chip on TV with their wedges, the ball seems to stay fairly low, however when I chip with my 60° the ball loops right up in the air. I'm a 28 handicapper [lol], and I usually chip with my 8 or 9 iron. Chipping with wedges- should I stick the ball right back in front of my right foot and stab down on it?

Re: Wedge Talk

I agree with several of the posts above - 48, 54, 60 is a great place to start, and, as Bo said, if you put the time in with those wedges, you can learn to save a lot of shots! My wedge game has been the staple of my game since childhood, and trust me, a good wedge game can turn a bad ball-striking round into a decent score. You might find after some practice that you have too much or too little of a gap between some wedges - don't be afraid to change or adjust your wedges (a decent club repair shop can bend wedges a degree or two if you need more or less loft, although that affects bounce which is another topic).

Spend your practice time hitting various shots around the green all the way to full shots and find which clubs work best in each situation. You will find when you have a 50 yard shot with a lot of green between you & the flag, the 54 hit easy will land on the front & roll to the flag, where the 60 would need to fly almost to the hole to get close. Experiment with various lies and conditions and see what club(s) produce the best results consistently. Personally, I use my 58* for almost all shots (unless I need a lot of roll), but I know several great players who use several clubs around the green to get the ball close. There is no one correct way - whatever gets the ball close is what's best for you!

If you'd like to learn more, check my "Hello..." thread - I believe post 118 (might be wrong, but it's around that number) has some discussion on wedges & using the bounce. There is probably some wedge discussion in my "Ultimate Practice Routine" thread as well.

Let us know how you like the wedges and if there's anything any of us can do to help.

I don't really put the ball really far back in my stance, I generally have it near the center but I do have my hands way ahead of the clubhead at impact delofting the club. A good chipping motion isn't a stab, it needs to be accelerating through the ball.

Re: Wedge Talk

PW 48 - 130y
GW 52 - 120y
SW 54 - 110y
LW 60 - 75y?

I almost never hit full swings with LW, but always hit my SW down to around 50y.

I canīt be without my LW though as I always have ****ty lies when I miss the green, like having to come down steep to get contact etc.

flat swing - might need 64 degree wedge

steep swing - dont need a 64 degree wedge

On a diffiuclt course with hard ground and fast greens and a lot of slopes and bunekrs, it is very advantageous to have 6 different shots with 3-4 different wedges. With a course with soft bunkers, a fair bit of rough and soft greens, you could get away with a pitching wedge and 56 deg sand wedge easy.
This. I play with 4 wedges (48,52,56,60), on a links course and use them all every round. 60 degree would be most used around the green but I would use anything down to an 8 iron depending on the slopes and pin position. Those lofts also give me a <15 yard gap between clubs which is great for full wedge shots.

He carries a 48/54/60 and was asking if he should buy a 4th wedge - either a 52 or 64. The answer to both questions, at least for now, is "no".

Re: Wedge Talk

I carry a 46*, 50*, 54*, 58* but lately have been going with just 46*, 52*, 58* and adding a hybrid. I actually like taking more 1/2 and 3/4 swings with my 52* than the full swing with the 54*. I think the 46-52-58 setup is actually the most optimal for me as I have also gone with the old 46-52-56-60 but liked this setup the least out of the three.

Yes the slightly longer shaft and the 2 degr. aswell as less bounce, makes it fit right in between my PW and SW. Sadly I got the SW first otherwise I would probably have looked for a 56 degr.
