A Tradition Unlike Any Other: The 2015 Masters A Tradition Unlike Any Other: The 2015 Masters

Only golf rivals baseball for statistical arguments.

Has average gotten better, no question. Has "Tour Bad" gotten better, without a doubt. Elite and great? Not so sure. Also, I wonder how the all exempt tour changed the scoring profiles of 60-125. Before the change, you had to qualify on Monday if you were outside the top sixty, and were exempt from qualifying for the next week if you made the cut. Pretty sure there were a lot of guys with pretty conservative game plans, given that a made cut, instead of firing at flags trying to win, was so important. The old system kind of protected the elite from the talented 80th ranked player firing at everything and getting hot. Modern players have no such protection from the rank and file. I guess that leads me down the path of wondering if perhaps the rank and file would have better scoring averages, more wins and top tens, if they were guaranteed to play next week and felt freer to take more chances.

Just rambling, but it is always hard to compare eras.

I was a pretty big golf fan already watching just about all I can but daily fantasy golf has made it even better. Not that olds play fantasy but seems like a good way to bring in younger viewers.

I'm probably giving those numbers too much credit there is too much variance in a single round much less four and when you throw in different courses and all the other crap then stats mean less and eyeball test has to take over.

Over reliance on pure numbers is for weak minded people who can't think for themselves.

Stats are a useful tool but they are limited.

Facts are just the worst hey. I too prefer pretending the world is how I'd like it to be rather than face reality. It's just so much easier.

Stats don't tell the whole picture. Not in any sport.

Did Tiger run above or below expectation at Augusta?

Would you agree or not that you and I can play in the same group with exactly the same swing and still experience a lot of variance between us during a round?

This has absolutely nothing to do with anything. There have been plenty of psychology experiments done over and over that show eyes deceive you more than pretty much anything. Statistics do not and are actual facts. The only one weak minded here apparently is you as you can not seem to grasp even the simplest of concepts.

Well, stats in golf are getting a lot better, but they used to be pretty deceptive. Better ball strikers lagging in GIR because they are so much more aggressive than the plodders, putts per round being an anti ball striker stat and no real measure of actual putting skill, even scoring was messed up and the old Vardon winners weren't always the best players.

I guess it is getting better with shot link and the new stats, but it used to be a little like Horse Racing. Lots of numbers that were hard to decipher, and led to a lot of incorrect assumptions.

Going to dig into the process of computing the new strokes gained stats so at least I know what every one is talking about these days.
