All the money Tiger has and access to the best doctors and they can't fix his back?

Polo-style golf in a wheel chair just might work for him.

I read he has to lie down a lot. This will be tough. He may start to develop abnormal muscle development as he avoids the pain of back issues. Moving around is challenging and it is completely normal to stay away from pain. But his body will not be acting as a unit. The other body parts may become overtaxed. Now he may avoid some of this with a lot of drugs, but that brings up other issues. I don't know if you can play competitive golf on high-dosages of oxycodone. Seems there would be balance issues at a minimum.

This could be a historic comeback. If he accomplishes 50% of what he did before he should be considered the greatest athlete ever. To be determined.

Not really any news just a 15 year journeyman's opinion but....

Might I add, a dimwitted journeyman who has 385 TOUR starts, 2 wins, roughly the same number of WDs as top 5s, and $19MM in earnings.

Well whatever Pat P. is or isn't the whole welp my back is injured about 2 rounds into every single comeback is suspect. I mean, does he never go 100% until he enters a tournament? Highly doubtful. Something other than his back is astray.

Hank Haney played some of the audio on his XM radio show this morning. I didn't think Perez said anything bad or outrageous.

That is some serious bulletin board material.

Sadly though, he's probably spot on in regards to this year.

Perez also has 385 more TOUR starts, two more wins, a lot more top fives, and $19MM more in earnings than you or presumably anyone else on this board. So if yours is an appeal to authority we should take his word over anyone here. Perez lives in Phoenix and the stories of his douchiness are legion but that doesn't make him any more wrong either.

Hating on Tiger is a thing of my past, probably a mix of the sad state of affairs today coupled with that long article about him a year or two ago which basically revealed him to be a trainwreck w/r/t his self-destructive tendencies. Not to mention, the upside of some of those same obsessive traits made him the best golfer in history from ~2000-2009, and the entire golf industry was a massive beneficiary of it. I pretty much always rooted against him, but at the same time realize that golf would be immeasurably less without his contribution to the game.

So these days I save my lulz for those in denial. Dude's done. Body, mind, swing. Toast. Too many roids, too much scar tissue mentally, presumably not nearly the motivated range rat he once was - which is totally understandable. It would be truly remarkable if he contended on a Sunday in a regular event ever again, much less a major. He may not play in more than a handful from here on.

But go ahead and shoot the messenger if it makes you feel better.

pat perez' comments are pretty wow. not sure why he feels the need to share them with the world but they certainly are interesting.

he's basically saying what everyone is thinking. and probably as pga pro he's a bit ahead of people like us in terms of relevent info.

i do think it's getting to the point where fair prop bets are more like "odds that TW has a top 5 in the next 2 or 3 years on pga tour"

at some point - and we may be there - i think TW just won't want to mentally tee it up any more and maybe will get a little psycho-somatic sp? on the injury front.

I'm happy to point out what sort of character PP is any time the opportunity arises. As you obliquely referenced, I think it goes without saying that his net worth is at least double what it would have been without Tiger.

And I agree, just because he's dimwitted doesn't mean he's wrong about his observations.

Rory on Tiger:

Quote:
"I never thought I would say this but I felt sorry for him. I just felt bad for the guy that his body won't allow him to do what he wants to do. I can't imagine anything so debilitating where you can't even stand up to do a press conference... Obviously there is a physical battle there but there has to be a mental struggle as well."

McIlroy went on to flash a bit of wisdom, saying that while Tiger's situation is disheartening, the 14-time major champion has much to be happy about.

"I'm glad that he has other things in his life. He has his kids and is so committed to them... golf is minuscule compared to watching your kids grow up. That's where my priority would be now."

"... life is more important than golf, which is what people have to remember when talking about Tiger Woods. Everyone sees him as a golfer, not a person. Tiger doesn't owe anyone in the game. He has nothing to prove to anyone. I just hope he gets healthy and happy."
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/rory-mc...155710872.html

Some pretty solid words of wisdom there from Rory.

It's inconvenient that we're sometimes smart to agree with knuckleheads - Rory Sabbatini's meltdown at Ben Crane is another example - but doing otherwise because we don't like them would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Nor should the extra money he's made on the back of Tiger elevating the sport mean that he is obligated to speak in hushed, reverent tones.

Particularly since Perez's angst is presumably not at Tiger, but rather fatigue at being asked the same Tiger-related questions over and over, and as he has demonstrated before he occasionally lacks grace and tact. A couple of years back I figured Justin Thomas - a hell of a player in his own right but at the time unproven - got really tired of answering questions about being friends with Jordan Spieth. But it's like the interview coaching Crash Davis gave to Nuke Laloosh...just grin and bear it, speak in platitudes, and if you're boring enough hopefully the media will **** off.

Rory's comments are great. He's right - Tiger doesn't owe anyone anything. It's his life; if he chooses to retire then good for him and I hope he's happy with the decision. Even if he gives himself to the delusion presumably present in most great athletes that they can accomplish anything, he must realize he's impossibly far from what he used to be, and mental and physical issues almost certainly prevent him from ever returning to that level - even if he decided to dedicate himself to the game 100%. If he enjoys spending time with his kids at all I can't imagine that being an attractive option.

Back surgery sure is a gamble. Saw someone who went to a neurosurgeon because he had so much back discomfort. Now he is 63% paralyzed and has a cane. And now in more pain than he was before. Not saying the surgeon did a bad job. You just never know.

It has been an amazing 9 year downturn since the US Open. For a person who was so singularly focused on the total majors that it was only an inevitably of what year. Now we wonder if/when he will play again. He is only 41. It just would be strange if he didn't play again. But it would also be strange for him to be just a middle of the pack player.

And now we have the weekly conversation is he playing or not.
