Did you know that one of us has a graduate degree in mathematics? What are the odds it is him?

I would like to note that Mr. Woods is #1 in driving distance on the PGA Tour this week. And that is with the original bomber Hank Kuehne in the field.

Whatever I'm drunk. but lumping everything >20ft into one category seems bad because at further distances the chance of a bogey goes up

i also dont deny that rory is getting better birdie opportunities tho

Isn't that he's #1 of the guys who made the cut? The stats for the guys who miss the cut are replaced with an N/A.

Hank missed the cut, although I had no idea he was the original bomber. What happened to John Daly, DL III, Dan Pohl, and Jack Nicklaus? (couldn't resist a good-natured barb)

If they missed they cut they clearly weren't as long as GOAT bomber eldrick woods. They say the ball doesn't know who hits it, but trust me, Tiger's balls know.

John Daly couldn't restring Venus' tennis racket on a good day.

# birdie putts >40'
McIlroy 1
Woods 3

# birdie putts >30'
McIlroy 2
Woods 5

Through 36 holes at the Honda, McIlroy has been better at golf than Woods. He's hasn't simply won a putting contest. That's fine. That happens.

If they swapped after hitting their approaches, one of 'em would be around -7, the other around -1.

Tiger has hit both more fairways and more greens than Rory.

Tiger has made only one less birdie than Rory, which kinda kills your proximity argument.

So more fairways, more greens, very similar birdie totals. I wonder what's different?

Sadly just score, and by a lot i might add. Although I am really loving Rory right now. I don't often (ever) claim next GOAT, but this kid might have it. His action is to me the perfect golf swing and it seems as though it is his natural I'm not even trying move. Love Mahan's swing, but it is obviously built from scratch. Rory just looks like a kid who can just make it happen with no thought.

Rory .6 shots gained putting, Tiger -1.2. That is a per round stat, so x2 you get 1.2 and -2.4 and a difference of 3.6. Tiger has hit the ball consistently better than Rory, however Rory's good shots are ending up closer to the flag than Tiger's and Tiger's worst shot of the week came at a poor time to find the water on a par 3 yesterday. That was good for basically a 2 shot penalty since it was stroke + distance. Putting difference 3.6 shots + Penalty shots 2= 5.6 shots. Difference between Rory and Tiger up to this point 6 shots.

Disclaimer: I have never said Tiger is playing better than Rory this week, but I think the difference between them is much closer than the 2 score cards would indicate.

Also Shremp a statistics person! Though I didn't major in statistics I took plenty of math classes for fun in college. I feel better about most of the stuff I've posted that is statistics related recently because I'm sure if it was way off Shremp of all people would have slammed the math and then sprinkled some Chevron Wold Cup diggs on top of it.

Rory has recently won something that actually matters and is likeable on/off the course. What has Tiger done lately other than pout and behave badly

I hear that is important on the PGA. No titles for the amount of skanky whores you nail

Not sure about the cut stuff for the PGA Tour stat, but Tiger's not really leading. The PGA Tour only measures drives on like 2 holes per day to get their driving distance stat. According to that stat Tiger is leading but its's better to look at shottracker. Tiger is averaging 311 off the tee according to shottracker, the leader is at 313.

How does this work?

I say, "Rory has given himself more good birdie opportunities by putting it closer, and putting it within closer ranges up to 20' more frequently."

You say that Tiger has one birdie fewer, and this, "killa kills [my] proximity argument?"

I'm trying to follow you.

I'll believe the hype around McIlroy when I see him win a major with a small lead on Sunday.

I wonder if Tiger will go with a different strategy? It seems like for a good portion of the majors he dominated, he just played super consistently, but never tried to over power the course.. I wonder if a different mindset could help him?

Are you kidding? I was bluffing shu! I thought you were the math guy! Now I am so screwed.

I shouldn't have mentioned it. Not my best moment. Sorry about that. I'll get back to the other stuff if I have time and feel inclined.

In my mind, Rory is pretty clearly the next Phil.

Ridiculously talented.
Charismatic and a fan favorite.
Pretty questionable course management at times.
To go along with that, his mental toughness has already failed a couple times in his career.

He could win 7 or 8 majors, and rather easily could be the best player of his generation. But I don't think he will ever be a Jones/Nicklaus/Woods.
