That's true, plus he has a poor RC record. But I don't think Furyk is significantly worse than Mahan, who fell off a cliff after the West Coast swing and gagged under the biggest Ryder Cup pressure two years ago. He's better than anyone else that was up for a pick. I don't see the matches turning on that one pick, either. I think DL3 pretty much got this right.

It begs the question, is it better to have contended and lost, or to never have contended at all? I have long been a critic of Furyk's ability to close out - I was surprised he did it at East Lake in 2010 - but if he's striking the ball far better than Mahan that may be a chance you have to take. At least he's getting to the 72nd hole, no clue what Mahan did in those two events but he didn't get a lot of TV time.

Doesn't Mahan have a really sick Ryder/Presidents cup record?

Meh, guess it's not that great. 2-0-3 in 08. Looks like 4-4-1 in PResidents. Mediocre in 2010.

Re: Ryder Cup U.S. Standings & Captain's Picks Discussion

Well, I know I said Mahan should be the 4th pick earlier itt, but after thinking about it more his play has been so poor for so long this year that I see why you wouldn't go with him.

I guess Furyk is the only one you can go with then. List gets pretty thin pretty quick. I guess I still would have preferred Van Pelt over Furyk, but there is no one else in the top 20 you could even make an argument for.

Furyk was 5-0 in last year's Presidents Cup.

I don't like looking at Pres Cup records when talking about Ryder Cup. I don't think they're all that comparable, just a completely different level of pressure.

If it's relevant that Furyk choked away two stroke play tournaments this year, then it is relevant that he crushed in last years Presidents Cup.

w/r/t Tiger-rific pairings, he and Furyk had a famous pairing in a President's Cup some time back, I think it was 2005, the same year that Mickelson was bff with DiMarco. Guessing they'll stick with Stricker/Woods but that's certainly an alternative cuz Tiger jives well with that whole "low-key grinder" thing.

I'd pair Tiger with Dufner.

Dufner the kinda guy that just plods along and doesn't let anything phaze him.

The pressure of a Presidents Cup that is basically in hand is about 1% of leading a major or playing in a contentious RC.

The Euros I'm sure are glad they won't need to face up against Watney and get Furyk instead.

Re: Ryder Cup U.S. Standings & Captain's Picks Discussion

Captains picks were spot on for me. Furyk was obviously the last pick but I think correct. Watney has been very hot lately but that has pretty much been his MO throughout his career. Get hot for 2 weeks then fall off themap for a while. He is also prone to blowups and is a below average putter. Mahan is just an awful putter, by tour standards and Van Pelt is even worse at putting than him. Ryder cup and match play in general is all about making putts. There's a certain psychological effect that making putts has on a opponent in match play that hitting it long and flagging irons doesn't necessarily have. Furyks experience put him over the edge against Watney who I have to believe was next on the list.

It should be noted that BVP changed his putting grip this season and saw immediate improvement (currently 9th in the strokes gained putting) category.

I thought Tiger and Furyk famously talked about how comfortable they were together and then went out and played like ass.

My guess is Furyk does't play much the first two days unless Sneds or DJ look like the pressure is getting to them.

If I was captain I would think Furyk and Sneds might actually be a decent combination but I doubt Love would go that route.

If Tiger plays with anyone other than Stricker I bet it's Dustin Johnson
