Re: Road to break 90

I had the same problem with twisting my ankle playing other sports and got me a nice supportive bandage, that will prevent that sort of thing from happening or at least damaging the ankle.

Here is a link (goes to German amazon, but im sure you can find the same product on English amazon too if you dont use the German version.

Have fun & keep going

Re: Road to break 90

I played today my only 3rd round this year (finally got holidays so gonna play much more).
Frustrating round, as always I would say

This time my iron play was bad. Last time I hit 71% fairways, today it was only 36%. Had one OB and twice had to chip the balls back to the fairways which were in front of the trees.

My short game was decent-ish. 34 putts, missed just one from inside 5feet, made many 2putts from around 40feet, just one 3putt.

Chipping/pitching is still bad. It was much better than last time but still.

Biggest problem I have is when the ball lays on very hard ground with almost no grass (or very thin). I cannot get the wedge under the ball and almost always blade it, so instead of 15m it goes 40. I use 60* wedge inside 50m, with those lies should I tried to use let’s say 9iron and try ‘putting stroke’? How should I approach these lies?

So my front 9 was 48- best 9 ever. (started really well +7 after 7).
Back 9 was a disaster- 56. Shot 9 on par 5 and 7 on par 3…..

Had only 3 pars (2 on par3, both up&down). Had one really good birde chance, so it’s still has to wait.
Definitely need distance. Hitting 7iron on par5 ~500m sucks. On holes it’s almost impossible for me to have GIR.

Hole of the day:
Par3- 162m

I bladed iron7 but it went about 70cm above ground through whole hole and stopped behind green. Pitch shot on the green and about 50feet putt to save par

Re: Road to break 90

I suck

Again 101 on the easiest golf course on Earth... no water, no trees

Fairways 43%
34 putts
11% GIR
3 Penalty strokes.....

Made 1st birdie ever!!! hmmm I mean I almost made..
par4 309m-
1st shot - OB
3rd shot OB
5th shot- fairway
6th shot- green
7th shot - putt from 6m
does it count as a birdie ? I know it's not, but still happy with it

made 3 PAR's
6 Bogey's
5 Double bogeys

one 4putt on par 3 from about 7m... fml
was pretty windy today-> hit pin high on par3 184m with 7iron....

I'm really happy with my <40m shots with *60 wedge today. Hours spent around practice green are paying off.
Not happy with putting- but have an axcuse- greens on golf course were much faster than practice green, just couldn't adjust

I feel like big round is coming. I feel like I’m even able to break 90 playing just with my iron7+ (like today).
But next week I’m going to different golf course- much nicer and much harder. So expecting a score around 105

Good luck buddy! Keep the 3 putts to a minimum and your short game sharp and you'll in due time get to 90.

Re: Road to break 90

i took a putting lesson. really, really helped. i did 12 putts in 9 holes the other day. it was small greens so it was somewhat skewed but still amazing. and my friend was amazed yesterday at how good my putting was.

here was the putting advice:

no wrist movement. pure pendulum

very quiet weight shift.

backswing and follow-thru not hugely difference in length. backswing length determines distance with same tempo.

pretend there's penny under ball and look at penny after ball has gone.

look into maybe having more weight forward and ball further back for alot of shorter shots. reduces the duffs alot.

look into teeing off with irons and non-driver more often. there's quite a few holes where you'd have to hit two absolutely perfect shots to get on the green and there's lots of trouble around. take those doubles, triples, quads etc. out of play. i was at qualifier for fairly elite tourney and the tougher holes completely ate up the field. guys would have been smarter to take their medicine for likely bogey, some chance at par.

practice shots that you aren't good at. i bit the bullet and started practicing my FW and hybrids more. has really helped. and absolutely necessary if you ever want to move to the longest tees. obviously not on your mind right now, but something to think about.

Re: Road to break 90

I might be the worst golf player ever (ok nobody is worse than Charles Barkley, so I’m 2nd) considered how much time I spent on practicing.
I finished a round few hours ago. Shot 105

It’s all about long game for me at this point. I spent hour on short game lately and I see it’s paying off. I feel quite comfortable around a green. I meant I’m nowhere close to being good, but I think my short game is good enough to break 100 at least.

Long game-disaster. I started hitting driver, but not ready to play it on course yet. But for the first time I bring hybrid with me.
3 OB today
Fairways- 29%...... many of them just being mega short
I hit about 8-9 shots with iron7 for less than 60m (not only from tees, rough also)

0 PARS
9 BOGEYS
5 DOUBLE B
36putts (two 3putts, one 4putt on last hole, one 0 putt chip-in from fringe), I know it’s a lot, but really happy with it, many long 2putts.

I'm afraid I just can't do it
I just care a lot about technical stuffs (this is funny bcos when I look at my swing there is no technic involved )

You have to. The first few years I played golf I didn't play near enough and I just spent a ton of time on the range. Every time I went on the course my swing just fell apart. You have to remember playing too. Pratice the technical stuff on the range and practice playing on the course. There is no OOB, water, hilly lies etc etc on the range.

This is not what I meant.
I wanted to say that I just can’t go and play and forget about technical stuff on golf course. Before every shot I’m thinking about million technical things…
I’m looking to play at least twice per week. Hope it’s enough.

So I finally break 100 today weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Nothing spectacular 98 (49-49).

3 PARS (almost 1st ever birdie, lip-out from 5feet)
6 BOGEYS
7 DOUBLE BOGEYS
2 TRIPLE

Fairways 14%.... this is going worse and worse. Had 5 <50m tee shots. Once even after 2nd shot I was in front of fairway….
Most of my misses going left, luckily I know why, just need to work on it
1OB
Just 1 GIR
33 putts

My short game was bad today. Worst hole- par 4 377m. I was 35m short from green after 2. It took me 3 chip shots and 2 putts to finish. And everything because of two ladies who didn’t see me looking for my ball after my tee shot, so I wanted to hurry up…

In general there was nothing spectacular in this round, still very happy with my score. Few changes and I’m gonna break that 90 at least on my course, which I think is really easy.

You sound a lot like me and I think this is bad for the average golfer. I was the same way back when I played fanatically. A million and one swing thoughts going through my head and I never was able to build any consistency.

Then one day I went out after taking a couple of months off. I wasn't expecting to do well and to be honest, didn't care. I just went out and tried to advance the ball towards the hole the best I could. I had the best round of my life! Can't explain it, but I was in a zone. I saw the shot I wanted to make and hit it without thinking of anything except visualizing the ball flight/path. In fact, forgive me for telling about the best shot I ever made (I'm a hacker, so this was really special at the time):

I was about 30 yds off the green and stuck underneath a tree. Branches overhead and water right in front of a raised green. I was just coming off a par, par, birdie, par and this seemed like an almost impossible shot for a high HC'er like me. But instead of panicking, I just visualized the shot. No other thoughts were in my head. I hit a low punch under the branches, over the water, and into the side of the green with just enough speed to kick up onto the green and land within 6 ft of the hole (and yes, I sank the putt)! It was a zone I'd never been in before or since.

The point of this story (other than me reliving a great round -lol), is to say that I think the previous posters are right. I wasn't thinking at all about mechanics. I was just *playing* the game. I'm sure baseball, basketball, and football players all work very hard on fundamentals and mechanics when they practice in order to ingrain them into their game. But when they are on the field, I doubt they're cluttering up their mind thinking about any of those things. They're just letting their natural talent and instincts take over and *playing* the game. It makes sense to me that golf is no different. Get the mechanics out of the way on the practice tee and then go out and *play* the course, instead of practicing on the course. You might find yourself playing the best golf of your life! At least I hope so.

Re: Road to break 90

Hey LFC, I have been following your posts for the past 2 months and we are both similar in our golf development. I play 1~2 rounds a week but rarely hit the DR. Been playing for 9 months now and just got my first lesson 2 weeks ago. I got down to my lowest score of 91 but have recently develop some very bad habit resulting in slicing almost every shot(before the lesson). I have broken 95 quite a few times but recent rounds with my terrible outside in swing have been have been terrible and scored 105+. Since my lesson I have scored 49(9)-97-46(9). I will update you on my progress and would be fun to have a friendly competition on who can break 90 first.

Do you use any score keeping software where I can keep up with you?
