Re: Road to break 90

Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate it.

Mvoss- I do those practice swings, setups etc a lot at home with or without a club. Also putting on the carpet. Helps a lot I think.

Huntypro-do you have any specific drill to work on shorter backswing?
Usually when I do slow practice swings between shots and check my club positions, at the top it looks like you mentioned it should. But when I do normal swing I take it too far. Probably because I think I need to hit it hard to go far (something I know it’s not true. When I did some really good short backswings I had great contact, nice straight line, good distance etc).

Rexx- I had to read it at least 5 times to understand everything but now I think I get everything you said. Good thing is that I see and feel in my mind how should it look like.
I remember that when I was learning snowboarding things I saw and felt in my mind I learnt pretty fast and it took a while to learn things I just didn’t feel.
I hope that with golf it will be the same.

When your swinging the cub you have to think you are using a 3/4 swing. A simple but effective swing thought.

As far as practise drills go try setting your wrists in front of your body and then turn to the top of the swing without changing your wrist position. Your hands should be above your right shoulder at the top of your backswing.

What happens is your body stops turning and your arms carry on and creat an overswing. You must feel your arms are stopping a lot earlier in the swing.

Use the video. Do one swing that feels like a half swing and the next a three quarter swing. You will amazed how far you still swing back. Rinse/repeat.

Re: Road to break 90

Maybe this game ain’t for me.
I’m not going to quit that’s for sure, I love to play, I love to watch it etc.
But maybe I will never break 80 or 90, maybe I don’t have any talent for it.

Luckily bad days like few lasts motivate me to work even harder.

Re: Road to break 90

I was (probably still am) a pretty talentless golfer when I started and got myself down to a 8-10 handicap in 6 years of golf (i live in canada, so that's technically 3 years). Don't give up!

Please be aware LFC that when you make major changes to your swing there will be some difficult times. Keep at it you will get better with quality practise.

Re: Road to break 90

I supposed to have a lesson with my coach today.
So I started swinging as s*** as for the last days. He was like: omg what are you doing? He said that if he just saw the shadow instead of a person he would have never guessed it was me.

He said that the changes I made- posture and hip rotation looks really good. Sometimes my left knee goes too much in front, but in general it’s a good change.
But everything else is strange. I’m so inconsistent in swing right now, but the worst thing is that I’m randomly making like 5 different mistakes.
Usually my body raise up before I hit a ball (need to work on that drill DGD mentioned).
Sometimes my hips are too slow and I hit it fat.
Very often I tilt back (weight on my right foot)- my body looks like letter “C” – shanks as a result.
Too long backswing etc

And than I can hit 6 really good shots in a row.
My coach was so confused he didn’t even know where to start. He said it might just be overtraining (I spent like 15h in last 4 days on DR) and told me to take a couple of days off. He of course didn’t count it as a lesson at didn’t take any money I saw he was really confused and resigned about my swing. That wasn’t a good feeling.

So I spent 2 hours on putting green and probably taking a break till Monday (we move ours today lesson to that day). Although I think I might grab a club on Sunday. 2 days without golf? No way..

Any thoughts, opinions, advices?

As a complete hack I'm just going to say maybe try working on fewer things.

Re: Road to break 90

As a total hack I feel like I've learned a lot about the swing by watching a ton of pro swings on youtube. Especially the slo-mo stuff. I wish we had YouTube when I was 20. A lot of guys have quirks but when you watch hundreds of videos you begin to see things that basically happen the same way each time no matter who is hitting. That's what I look for mainly is the basics and try to discard the anomalies (like John Daly's exaggerated backswing or Jim Furyk's high hands). I feel like I've learned a lot but I'm still trying to incorporate these things and be able to physically execute (and feel) what I've seen. That can be the tricky part.

Re: Road to break 90

Totally random observation for the guy with 639 swing thoughts:

You know that relaxed, easy swing that you can put on every so often when you are pitching a ball? A slightly closer stance, feet a little more narrowly spaced, open a little, followed by a 1/2 or 3/4 swing? The one you use when looking for "touch?"

See if you can get that down with all of your irons. Just sort of "throw" a bunch of balls up in the air with easy, "pitchy" swings. It'll give you more confidence, and it'll get you better-acquainted with the loft of each club. It is easier to expand on that foundation, in my opinion.

Right now, you look very rigid, and I doubt this can yield a consistently good result in a 20+ handicapper.

Just my .02.

Re: Road to break 90

how is your putting/chipping? my game improved the most when i worked on those two monsters. remember that of the 100 plus shot you take each round a good % is putts. Make putts lower your score.

Re: Road to break 90

i think what bradyboy said is exactly correct... to break 90 you have to be a decent chipper/putter. even with a bad swing you can get close to a green in 2, you just gotta be about to put it in the whole after that. i've never taken a lesson, but play a ton with my buddy and he is a superb chipper and I was able to break 80 within a year. he taught me everything about chipping and putting.

Re: Road to break 90

You know I feel like your trying too hard at this and overworking yourself. Not that its a bad thing.

I feel like every-time you go to play golf all you think of is shooting a 90 or trying to do good instead of just playing and being relaxed. Play hole by hole and worry about whats in front of you at that time. Do you also finding yourself thinking too much before a shot? Do you like to do that anyway?

I try and think of 3 things I need to do for my good shot. Too much thinking and I mess up and generally do whatever I was thinking of like topping the ball of hitting it in that damn water in front of me.

I feel like your thinking of everything your coach tells you like where should your wrists be, hip placement, knees bent, strength etc. (which as said isn't a bad thing, listen to him) but you just may be over thinking everything and over-trying every single shot. Just know your body position and train your muscles to just do it every-time. If that makes sense. Just flow with it.

This is a pretty faulty premise. Hackers often hit shank after grounder after chili dipper.

Although I agree the short game is very important, I believe that consistent ball striking is actually more important. Now, I am not talking about "good shots." I am talking about consistently advancing the ball at least NEAR the fairway.
