This whole thread is starting to tilt me. All some of these jokers want is everything handed to them with no work whatsoever. Go look for a friggin' sprinkler head or 150 bush.
Regardless, they don't have a clue how far you they it anyways so it really doesn't matter. He he, that felt pretty good.

I'm too young and too north american to remember the days when there WERE no markers whatsoever...but I DO definitely remember only having a 150 marker and having to PACE stuff off (including from 83yds out to the pin for the exact yardage!).

lol i know my yardages down to the yard. I play way too much golf...i'll admit though, this skycaddie/range finder things feels like cheating. The usga says it isn't and I was able to use my sky caddie in my last tournament, but it doesn't feel right.

I didn't know this. I thought there was a chip in the flagsticks or whatever? I was jacking around with some guys range finder and I really sucked at getting a consistent reading to the flag, much less a bunker or whatever.. Anyway, sorry.

don't forget to mention that you'll be the first one complaining to Judge Smails about slow play.

The top models (usually >$350...mine is the Pinseeker 1500 non slope) have a chip IN the range finder to help hit flags. The lower models are much harder to use. I've used the $200 models and you hit flags maybe 50%...with mine, it's 100% and a monkey could do it.
Why does it feel like cheating? Tour pros have amazingly accurate tour books and play on courses where EVERYTHING is marked...so it's really quite easy to know the exact yardage...this basically levels the playing field wrt knowing yardages.

My senior year in high school(1987), I decided to make a yardage book of the course we almost always played. It had yardage bushes, but I didn't completely trust them. It was nothing but a local muni, and not in very good shape at that. So throughout a few practice round before the season started I walked off every yardage from every marker on the course and quickly put together an excellent book that was to be used by my eyes only.
It was a success. There was one 150-yard bush that was actually 129 to the middle of the green. And the shot played downhill at that. Other bushes were short or long of what they said and some were within a couple of yards of what they should be. But regardless, I knew the exact yardage to the middle and front of the green on every shot. Yes, I had walked off the green depths as well. And as this was a muni course, the greens really didn't have any ridges in them.
I did this at other courses as well when I started playing college golf. In short, I put the work in and had a nice advantage over the other players. And it paid dividends. So I just can't help but laugh at some of the comments in this thread about not being able to hit the flag with a Bushnell or that slowing up play.
Heck, I almost never get exact yardages now when I play casual rounds. I know what it is within 2-3 yards of course, but realize from 175 or something that 2-3 yards will make no real difference. I will tend to step a sprinkler head when I have a wedge in my hand as I know within a couple of feet how far I will hit them, but otherwise I just use an educated eyeball before sticking it close. Most amateurs out there wouldn't be hurt in the least by doing the same.

Yeah, yeah, you're the greatest. Yadda yadda yadda. I love my SkyCaddie and I especially love how it lets me know the exact yardage to the front of the green as well as the middle and back, so if there's a front pin and I want to stay below it, I know what I should be trying to hit. Just because I can't execute that shot all that often doesn't mean it isn't fun to try. It's just a great product.

I was thinking of making my own yardage books for the course I normally play around here using Google Earth after I saw this

Re: Range finder vs GPS
Coming back from Vegas a buddy brought a GPS one that you can store 20 courses in. I got tired of guys asking whats the yardage Don? or wsiting for the GPS. One buddy who plays slow as it is was standing beside a sprinkler and asked him waht the yardage is.
My opinion they slow the game down.

i started using smartSCORECARD on my iphone to quickly record a round of golf and upload it to oobgolf. It actually has a Google Earth screen where you can drag two markers around the screen and it tells you the yardage, and even attempts to GPS your location. it's not perfectly accurate, but it's pretty useful if you are looking for that sort of thing in the palm of your hand.
as far as slowing down play, if your iphone is slow loading up the sat picture, just put the phone back in your pocket and play on.
i really can't imagine walking off all distances at a course to put together YOUR OWN yardage book. that's just nuts.
