The one thing I don't like about playing golf The one thing I don't like about playing golf

I got put behind a group of 32 Asians on Sunday. 1 hour to play 2 holes and we walked off the course and demanded a refund (which we got)

I might just join a private course next year, just sucks living in the city and not having a car - hard to take advantage of having a membership.

Basically had this happen at Garrison on July 3rd. Cleared up by the back 9 but it was a 5:30 round. Just unbearable.

It's not fun and you can't play well.

A course up here in the Toronto area held a 2 for 1 special some years ago so me and a few buddies got in on it. We get to the first tee and it's madness so we ask the marshall what's going on? "The management doubled-up the tee-times to get the revenue back from doing the 2 for 1 special, so there are currently 5 minute tee-times".
We walked off 14 after a 5:30 round.

I don't mind the commitment because I already have a huge passion for the game, but for someone starting out it's a huge hurdle.
Bingo...

that and cost

I actually find the ideal round of golf would be about 15 holes.. Anybody else start looking forward to the round ending around that point?

Slow play is meh but what's really awful is people not letting others play through.

However you get a busy weekend and there's nowhere to go anyways.

I did play a 1:45 18 holes the other evening teeing off at 6:30. Didn't catch anyone until the 17th hole because it was still 100 degrees when I teed off.

My favorite way to play. Get off work straight to the course and play in under two hours.

Course by my house is 2 6s - play one of the 6s twice for 18

I also think 18 is too many

I rarely think 18 is enough. I usually go back out for on course practice for an extra 9 holes. Work on whatever I did the worst that day or play best ball with myself for fun or a mix of random stuff.

I just wanted to throw in there that sometimes older golfers get a bad rap. On weekday mornings we have several groups of me in the 60 to 80 range, and the same for women. In almost all cases these groups play ready golf, and move quickly, some of the fastest groups are old ladies who shoot 110 and just get up and hit, get to their ball and hit again. They enjoy socializing in the club house, not on the course.

I just thought I should point this out because the other day I was playing in the afternoon behind some 18-22 year old 3 or so handicappers, and they took forever. I wished I was behind Emma, Erma, Wilma and Grace, who play at 815AM and just move along at a 330 pace...lol

Some of you who play in Arizona and California may have experienced this as well. The "old" guys who have the early tee times usually are just clipping along at a great pace.

I'm in AZ and would agree with this. We tee off at 5:30am in the summer and the old guys, etc tend to play quickly. A lot seem to be out there for exercise as much as the golf. The 10am crowd, not so much...

They should incorporate a clock you can call on the person you are playing with just like they have in poker. I have played with a few guys competitively that I definitely would have used it on.

One of the courses I play at has a clock on the 5th, 10th and 15th tee. The clock says your original tee time should have been XX:XX. If it was earlier then this you need to catch up.

That's a good idea I've never seen that before. Any round over 4 hours is excessive IMO

The clocks are pointless because (a) the group that should care doesn't care, otherwise they'd already be playing faster, and (b) every group behind them can't do anything about it because they're stuck behind that one group.

There's only one way to speed up play on a public golf course -- have rangers who make slow players move along and who will even make them move up a hole if they fall too far behind.

Same. And there's a ranger at the clock telling the group they need to speed up play if they are off the mark.

So do they do anything to enforce it if the group says sure and continues at the same pace?

Found this among some of my old golf stuff this weekend. Seems apropos.

The city courses here in Cleveland have the most tilting commercial. They advertise fast play Fridays where you will be sure to get your round done in 4.5 hours. No clue on what planet you consider 4.5 hours fast

+1

I have been at courses like this. When you are 20 mins behind on the 5th tee, and can't hit because the 4 some in front is in the fairway waiting to hit into the green, then what good is the clock?

One time the ranger was with us at the tee that had a clock and my buddy asked him what he was doing to get us back on pace. The guy mumbled something about a slow group on 11 and drove off.

Woman have never been slow golfers IMO now Korean men are the nut low...slow,don't fix divots or any other damage they do to the course...just awful in general to the beautiful game of golf.

I didn't realize Asian golfers were such a menace. There's a sizable Vietnamese contingent at my course but they don't cause any chaos.
