Classic Tuq. Attack a poster he doesn't like for any reason imaginable, then when getting called out for being dumb, keep being dumb, because, hey, he still hates that poster! So why answer his question?
You probably don't loathe Augie, so you can also answer him, DiqTuqer.

That's the gist of match play, it's between 2 people, so this had a feeling of match play even though it technically wasn't. If you guys wanna get anal with the definitions and the announcers comments then knock yourselves out.

Plus, Tuq seemed to be implying there was some angle to this matchplay comparison that we Just Are Not Getting.

He called out a poster for being a nit, which you were. I don't see how he was being dumb at all (and Tuq and I certainly don't agree on everything).

The number one, by far, most distinct aspect to match play is that you are playing one opponent, unlike stroke play. You play with your opponent, which was done today. Along with that, the players today were playing their opponents much more than a normal stroke play round.
If people don't see the significant similarities to match play, then they just don't understand what's going on.

Yeah, like when ZJ missed his putt on 16 and picked it up.
And actually, the number one, by far, most distinct aspect to match play is that each hole exists in a vacuum. I can triple bogey a hole and still win or halve it. If I do that in a stroke play tournament, I'm probably f*ed.
Nor is it any great insight that your decisions on the course are affected by whether or not you're running neck-and-neck with one other guy well clear of the field, or need an eagle on 18 to get into four-man playoff. For that matter, your choices in a match play round will vary depending on the situation (i.e., whether your AS on 18 or 4up on 13) just as much as it will in stroke play.
In conclusion and summation, I'm still not seeing any matchplay parallels with more weight than "hay look 2 peeple," and I don't want to live in a world where it's considered in poor taste to point out the inanities of professional sports announcers.

Not denying I'm a nit. Just seems like there are about 85 million people in the world who could talk golf on a national telecast so I expect a bit more I guess.
If on the 16th hole, they were All Square, and one guy was like "it's basically match play from here on out" that would be reasonable, as winning any hole - whether by 1 stroke or 3 - could legitimately mean it's over.
But it was 2 or 3 guys repeating it with like 11 holes left to play, that's what made it so cringeworthy imo. And they were excited about their theory like it was some brilliant discovery.
This was a really fun tourney to watch though, especially the weekend. These two just steamrolled, ZJ getting up and down so many times and Dufner just not making any mistakes (until mid through today). Dufner looked so disappointed today but he still finished what 4 strokes ahead of 3rd place? Any time you do that you have stomped.

Don't even show any of the other losers in the field. These guys are curb-stomping.
Also PSA for Gary McTard: Calling John Huh "Johnny Questionmark" isn't funny. It also reeks of "I've never met an Asian person before." Just stop. Call the man by his name.

Especially seeing as he has more wins than McCord has had in his entire career.

I enjoyed it on Friday when he splashed his bunker shot out on 11 to like 10 feet, so he threw his club off his bag and said to his caddy, "pick my wedge up, bitch."
So likeable.

You are mistaken. Mano y mano is much more significant. Instead of battling a dozen or so guys for the lead, forced to play the course only, you've got your opponent standing right beside your for 18 holes.

Re: Official 2012 PGA Tour (non-majors) discussion thread
i am surprised anyone would argue that the announcers were more right than wrong in calling it match play.
you could call me a nit and i would quickly concede that, but then you'd have to admit my point is true, and i think that would leave me 1-up!
eventually they wised up and started calling it "medal match play" and "matchplayish" (coincidentally, about 10 minutes after i tweeted the PGA on CBS twitter account!) so even the announcers realized they should stop calling it match play.
if it were match play dufner would have won the thing, even without zach's penalty on 18!
