Not ashamed to say my bag is almost all Nike. Sad day, I think they make some underrated equipment.

reality is with Tiger they had an incredible marketing tool. They bet on Rory and I think they are not seeing that payoff Also with the market share slipping and less people golfing I think its a smart decision.

I meant to swing by the nearest Dick's Sporting Goods tonight to see what kind of inventory they had left ... if the price is right I might be tempted to pick up a couple hybrids.

Got an email from my course this morning that they are running a Nike blowout sale while supplies last. $150 drivers, $100 fairway woods, $90 hybrids.

went to the one near me 3 weeks ago and they were just about cleaned out. Zero golf clubs left. Found one box of golf balls for $7.50, score!

(nvm got Dick's mixed up with Sports Authority going out of business sale)

i've liked nike equipment but not sure it sold to too many lowish handicappers not at anything other than real discount prices.

is it being shut down? or will they sell remnants to someone else?

i agree on the insightful TW comment by earlier poster. he ain't coming back and if he does it'll be disastrous anyway.

where does this leave rory? do they owe him the last 7 years and $175 million of that deal? or do they have a major out?... pretty sure when he signs elsewhere, the money he makes there will at least partially flow back to nike i.e if he gets $15MM per year from X company for golf clubs, he would keep half and half would go to nike - if nike keeps paying him.

how many players play nike? last major winner non-TW using nike. lucas glover? did rory win a major with nike? i think not but not sure.

I was wondering about athlete contracts. Since Nike will still make soft goods they probably have to stick with their current contract obligations. I don't know if someone like Rory will have to play unmarked clubs and balls or if he is free to sign with another hard good manufacturer.

Rory might have a valid exit clause if he wants to use it.

edit..just read this article. It says Rory has an out from his contract after year.

powder, great detective work.............. i wouldn't think rory would want an "out" from the deal. keep getting $25MM and go back to playing titleist who i understand don't pay that well

you are correct on the soft goods............ how much of whatever astronomical figures nike paid TW was in hopes of golf equipment - including balls, shoes etc. - and how much that he was huge winner and good for the general brand.

if you go to a nike outlet store they are huge and i always think of them as one of the major anchors.. but half of it is just $0.50 cotton shirts with logos on them. or maybe a bit more performance-oriented but basically fairly straight-forward clothing... although i guess that describes most sports superstores.

apparently 5 year deal with "option" for another 5 years. presumably rory's option.... maybe he'll keep wearing nike or maybe they'll come to some financial arrangement i.e. pay him 40% of what he'd make in last 6 years of that 10 year deal or something like that.

rory did win 2 majors with nike clubs.

pxg or whatever the name of parsons - go daddy founder - high end golf clubs company is the favorite to land rory for equipment.

Shame, they came a long way since the old slingshot irons. I still play the pro-combo irons. Love them.

Used to have one of those old Nike squarehead drivers. Sounded like hitting a metal pole with an aluminum bat.

I still love my method putter though.

Link please. Because I find this utterly laughable.

I hit a couple of Nike clubs once, hated them. Tried a sleeve of their tour balls I got for free, hit a drive on the first hole and it felt horrible. Hit the iron shot and before it hit the ground had given away the entire sleeve to someone in my group.

That being said, I wear quite a bit of Nike soft goods, just not to play golf.

Young crowd doesn't spend as much money the olds though. Nike will continue to make a lot of money on apparel.

Agreed. Personally I have a love hate relationship with Nike. I love their workout clothes, but their shoes are too narrow. Their golf shorts and pants also only come in even number sizes. Well guess what, those don't fit me and I have switched to Adidas for my golf clothing.

Ah, OK.

The paragraph was not written clearly in the article, but it seems to state that there are four favorites. Titleist, Callaway, Mizuno, and PXG. PXG was last in that list and then it said favorite, so I can see how it could be misinterpreted.

Was in Edwin Watts this evening and all of their Nike clubs are gone except for some irons.

i reread the paragraph and i'd say you are correct - both that it's an awkward sentence and that the 4 companies are the co-"favorites" to get him

i've seen the PXG as favorite elsewhere but not sure they don't just repeat it from one media source that may have worded it wrong.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of Under Armour's golf clothing. Love their shorts

I still play a 5 or 6 year old SRT8-Fit Tour driver. Won it for having long drive in a scramble, never had any complaints but never tried any other Nike clubs
