grips are a matter of preference but I really like the Golf Pride NDMC (New Decade Multi-compound) grips. Last year I tried the Golf Pride Tour Velvet but I found they wore down much too quickly. The NDMC grips are really tacky and don't seem to wear as quickly.

A friend of mine started golf when he was young and really liked leather'ish wrap grips, this year he bought a set of AP2s and put these old school grips on them but I think they are terrible.

If you're in Canada, wait until January/February for golftown's re-grip event, it's still pricey to regrip a whole set of clubs in NDMC grips but it's much cheaper during that event. I think it cost me about 100 after tax this spring to do all of my clubs (minus putter).

When you say the NDMC grips are really tacky, you mean non-slippery, right?

Random ?

In alternate shot format, players literally alternate ever shot correct (i.e. you cant have the same person drive every time)? So if I put out on the hole, my partner must tee off.

What happens when a put is conceded? Does that count as a players stroke? If I am set to finish out a 2 footer, but it is conceded, do I tee off the next hole or does my partner?

a quick Google search for me got this from http://www.golfblogger.com/index.php...lternate_shot/

While the proper term is foursomes, most US golfers refer to this format as alternate shot. As defined in Rule 29 of the Official Rules of Golf, Foursomes are played between two teams of two golfers, each of which plays just one ball. Players on each team alternate teeing off, and then alternate each shot thereafter.

Example: Player A tees off while his partner, B, watches. Player B then hits the ball from where it lands after A’s shot. Then it’s A’s turn until the ball is in the hole. On the next hole, Player B tees off, even if he took the final putt.

I have to add that I guess we did it wrong back in college during PGM on-campus events. We always played stroke play alternate shot as alternating every shot...so if player A holed the putt on a previous hole, player B would tee off the next one. Guess we were wrong! Opps!

Hmm, I had no idea. Thanks for looking up this info.

I started getting Golfweek with some old frequent flier miles last year and yesterday I got a 2-for-1 renewal offer. $20 to renew (much cheaper than anything else I've gotten) and I can send a free subscription to someone else.

If you're not familiar with it, it's much more of a tour golf news magazine than a instructional tips/vacation suggestion magazine (though they do have a small travel section every week and the occasional advice article). Free to the first person to PM me your name and address.

P.S. I would guess it kicks in when my subscription runs out in November, so you probably wouldn't get any issues until December. It comes out roughly every week, but they skip a few weeks and it's a little bit sporadic depending on what tournaments and such are going on.

sweet offer! great magazine.
Weekly accept during winter, it's bi-weekly.
I'd jump on it, but already subscribe.

So I was hitting the ball pretty well yesterday (didn't make many putts, though) but started to lose it as the day went on (standard).

I'm about 100 out on a par 5 and hit a cold sh*nk...ball ends up in the middle of some dead, thorny stalks under a tree. Tilting somewhat, I go in there, and try to chop it out.

Doh.

So there was a big rock under the junk LDO. I'm going to replace the club, but I was wondering how this amount of damage would typically affect the performance? Does having the leading edge jacked up like this actually cause it to stick in the rough? How about the sand?

I don't think it will effect your shots at all.

This.

The ball is gone by the time your club hits the turf. Well, effectively, and in theory.

haha - you guys haven't seen me hit the ball.

Good to know, though - I might continue to carry it, then, as a reminder to be more aware about hitting out of the junk. Beats having a broken wrist, I suppose.

my chipping woes have started to resurface. in the past i've messed around near the practice green and chipped one handed. i'd say 90% of my one handed chips are perfect.

how much of a clown would i look like if i chipped one handed for a round?

not as much of a clown than the guy who uses both hands but gets outchipped by you imo

Quick question: Is it considered poor form to go to a course, use the practice green and then leave? Every time I want to practice putting at the course down the street from me I buy some range balls too so I don't feel like a freeloader. I'd say I actually play rounds there once every week or two (sometimes more). It's not exactly a high end course or anything, but still.

If it's your regular course, then I don't see a problem with it at all.

Freeload it up. I've spent days practicing at places I've never played. No one will think ill of you.

Is this true? I always wonder how I can get more practice time at the facilities at a couple of the courses I play. I always just squeeze 20 min in before a round. I figured you'd have to pay.

It's not frowned upon to just show up and practice on their chipping/putting surface for hours?

Yes, it is absolutely frowned upon. But if it is a place you play semi regularly I wouldn't worry about it. If not, I would always hit some balls, even their smallest bucket, just so you are a paying customer.

well i think "for hours" would be frowned upon but if it was a course i was playing once a week or whatever then i'd have no problem practicing for 1/2 hour and not paying. none. and i don't think that would be frowned upon.

If you find a place you like, get to know the staff. Buy little stuff - tees, a candy bar, etc. - so they get used to having you around and they know you're not 100% freeloading.

So I go to walk 18 at a course I've never played before. I go in and pay and they tell me they can get me right out. I check with the starter and he tells me there's a foursome about 2 holes ahead and that there's supposed to be a twosome teeing off with me. I wait around a few minutes and the starter tells me I can just go ahead. I tell him I don't mind waiting because I don't want to run into a wall of people by myself.

I wait a few more minutes for this phantom twosome and they never show. I tee off and quickly catch up to the foursome on hole 5 or 6. I notice a hole before that that there is a twosome in a cart catching me (because I'm taking my time and playing two balls in some spots). I wait what feels like forever for the foursome to get off the green of a par 5 that I don't think I can reach from where I am, and I decide that instead of playing through the foursome by myself, I'll just hang back and pair up with the two behind me. I wave the guys up and they top and shank their shots. I hit my layup while they make their way up to where I am and I help one of them find his ball. They continue to make their way toward the green and I hit my 3rd shot in to about 10 feet. I overhear one of the guys say that he's done with this hole, and the other guy picks his ball up. I rush my putts to finish out and walk to the next tee. They're already teed up and start firing. I get out my driver and put my glove on and they get into their cart and drive up to their next shots. I am left on the tee in disbelief that these guys thought I was just letting them play through! I internally laugh my ass off because I have never seen anything like that before! No "thanks", or any sort of acknowledgement of anything. They just went right through me.

Luckily there was a couple directly behind them that didn't mind pairing up for the rest of the round. And yes, we waited on that twosome on nearly every hole for the rest of the round.
