not that this will happen to you, but I like telling stories....

adjusting my golf goals is something I have had serious trouble achieving. All my life i wanted to get down to a handicap of 5 and I didn't care how long it took. So I gradually worked my way down, taking a couple of shots off my handicap at a time and learning how to play to that handicap. When I was 16 years of age, I had a handicap of 18 from 15 - 26 years of age that steadily dropped from 18-16-16-14-12-11-9-9-7-7-6-5. And when I got there, i thought to myself. Right I'll try and get to 3 or 4, but it hasn't really happened yet on any consistent sort of a level.

It's been two years and i have been hovering around the 5-6 mark. I had a brilliant round at the start of the year and got to 4, but i have since played the worst golf of my life and was back out to 7 as of last week Back to 6 again now since during the week, but i have found it so hard to adjust to getting passed my initial target that i had set for myself for all my life.

I'm new around the 2+2 forums and really love the game of golf. I have been out 10 times this year and go to the range on average twice a week. My downfall is I have never gotten any lessons, and my game is pretty bad. On average I shot from 105-115.... Are lessons a must in my case?

Leaving shortly on my second golf trip of the year. 9 rounds in 7 days in Fairmont/Invermere, B.C. area, should be fantastic.

Whoa those prices on their website are insanely cheap, jealous.

Broke my PW in half today, I took a practice swing too close to a giant hanging tree branch and hit it with my follow thru.

And recommendations for a new one?

I have a golf story. I hit a high perfect 5 iron from 175 to about 5 feet on the par 3 12th today at my new club. It is a bit of a right to left putt and I hit a perfect putt with conviction. It goes into the middle of the hole, hits the rim of the cup perfectly, and comes out of the hole straight back towards me. It was the oddest thing I've ever seen. The putt was maybe going 1.5 feet past the hole if it missed. I took the birdie and I don't feel morally wrong about it one tiny little bit. Oh and it was 106 degrees.

Did it go right down into the hole and pop up and out? Or just hit the far edge and never totally went into the hole?

I had the latter happen to me in my round today. I was baffled.

no it just clanked out like you back rimmed a free throw. I checked it out pretty closely and there was a little tiny ledge for it to "make sense", but it wasn't anything I would ever notice. I tried to recreate the same effect like 10 times from 1 foot and couldn't do it.

Played Lionhead today. Rated as the most difficult course in Canada and 3rd most difficult public access course in North America by Golf Digest.

From the Golds the course is rated 77.5/152. The blacks require pre-approval from the pro shop. I blew a 95. wow. beautiful course tho.

Cup liner has to be a little bit crooked for this to happen. The same thing happened to a dude on the second to last hole of Q school a few years back. Ball bounced out, he misses his card by 1 shot.

jesus. I can't even imagine. It's like a sign from above that today isn't your day (and it wasn't!).

I played Lionhead in the spring last year and enjoyed it too, although it was tough as nails, even from the whites.
Apparently a few years ago after adding those new back tee-decks, they had a tournament there with some pros in the field and none of them broke 80 from the back tees. Customer service is generally terrible at Lionhead though, and they frequently sport very very long rounds.

What percentage of your birdies would you say come from the fairway versus the rough?

Would It be more than 80%?

I'd say probably only 60% for me. This is mainly a result of just missing fairways on par 5s where most of my birdies come from.

80% seems way too high, even if you count par 3s as fairway.

Or maybe I just play courses with wimpy rough.

ahh good point. So you would say that its easier to make a birdie on a par 5 where you miss the fairway than a par 4? (This seems kind of obvious but im just checking).

Took the day off work tomorrow and playing one of my favourite courses in the area; Oakridge Golf Club.
It's such a nasty course. 6300~ yards from the tips with a 142 slope rating. Designed by McBroom, it's such a beauty.

(what is it with golf websites that have a penchant for horrible photography of their courses?)

Haven't come in here in a while but figured I'd sure my experience on Tuesday volunteering at The Western Amateur (http://www.thewesternamateur.com/), being hosted by my parents club Skokie CC.

I worked the 12'th green in the morning replacing divots from 8-12:30. 12 is our signature par 3. Big pond across the whole hole, leading up to an elevated undulating green. It can play anywhere from about 225 to 190 from the tips. For some reason they had the tee in the intermediate box, leaving players 198 to the middle of the green. Much shorter than what they had it during the practice rounds.

I saw some very good shots but also a lot of bad, bad shots. 2 water balls during my time on the hole and NO birdies, which was shocking to me since the tee's were up.

In the afternoon, I fore-caddied on the 3'rd hole (reachable par 5 with a good drive). The rough was extremely deep on my side of the hole so I had to really keep an eye out for balls the missed the fairway. Didn't lose one ball all afternoon, thankfully.

Notable players seen: Tim Mickelson, Angel Cabrera jr, Jin Jeong (#1 ranked amateur, 16'th at British Open)

Also, the guy that my family is hosting, and who I got to hang out with a little on Monday night, is tied for 4'th. Blayne Barber. Nice southern kid from Florida, junior at Auburn.

Probably the latter.

Certain courses in my area (central PA) I couldn't care less if I'm in the rough as long as I got an angle to the green I can get there. But if I play Penn State Blue Course and end up in the rough, unless I get a miracle lie where its sitting up, my dreams of making a birdie are pretty much over. The stuff is deep, thick and wants to pull the club right out of your hands.
