Getting a chance to play Peachtree Golf Club this morning. Currently #34 on the Golf Digest top 100 courses list. I'm filling in for a last second cancellation for a school fundraiser so I'm not sure if the format is a scramble or best ball, but I'm hoping for the latter. Pretty excited either way.

The greens at Big Met in Cleveland, and probably most places around here have finally gotten to the point where there isn't much point to worry about your score on putts. For some reason I never realized they stop mowing them this late in the year even if the course is still open. Totally makes sense now why USGA has off season in certain areas and the scores don't count till spring.

Another weird thing is today I noticed they cut 2 different cups in each green and you just put the flag stick in the one you didn't use so it doesn't get as much traffic in 1 area. That totally blew my mind, first time I have actually tried to golf this late into the season. And the ball really doesn't go as far on days like today. 38 degrees when I teed of and got up to about 44. This is probably all obvious to anyone who golf in the North East but I grew up in San Diego so this is new to me.

End pointless rant of my first world problems of still playing golf in sub optimal conditions.

are you still playing your summer ball when the temps get cold? if so, you may want to do a little research into balls that perform better in cold temps (i.e. nxt tour/tour s)

Yeah I am still using a 330rx. Was thinking about picking up some rx-s ones or maybe Wilson Duo. Something a little softer.

Yeah they use two cups and rotate between them because it's pretty much impossible to cut holes once the ground freezes.

As for what ball to choose for cold weather, I prefer to stay inside and play video games.

USGA is no longer going to accept solo rounds played alone for your HDCP

So how the hell would they know?

Playing alone and necessary peer review: To further support the key System premise of peer review, scores made while playing alone will no longer be acceptable for handicap purposes. This change underscores the importance of providing full and accurate information regarding a player’s potential scoring ability, and the ability of other players to form a reasonable basis for supporting or disputing a posted score. (Section 5-1: Acceptability of Scores)
I'll be interested to see what impact this actually has. It's contrary to the principle of posting all your scores and I'm not buying that excluding rounds provides improved information regarding potential scoring ability. There is already plenty of bitching about guys that practice a lot but don't post many rounds.

Agreed. I play about half my rounds solo and post every single one. If I didn't, my handicap would be quite a bit higher as I play just as well by myself or in a group. Currently it is as accurate as it can get. I don't see how this is helping anyone. Cheaters will cheat regardless.

I will just be treating solo rounds as a practice round now and play a few balls and such.

Pretty much this. Someone was DQ'ed from my club championship this year for inflating their handicap. He said he had a 13 cap and goes out and shoots -1 71 in round 1. The cash game group he plays with keeps their own handicaps and he was listed as a 5 in that group.

That or USGA got sick of vanity caps under 2 showing up to the US Open local qualifier and shooting 96

Certainly no problem to play year round in NZ. You might have to endure a little rain if you can only get out on weekends but that's it. Doesn't get colder than about 46 degrees F here in Auckland. Much better in Australia during the winter. But playing in summer there is no fun!

That's pretty ridiculous.

One of the things I like about the course I play at is they have a pretty decent size group of players who play the back tees. All of them are trying to get better and there isn't any funny business with the handicaps. A few vanity handicaps but those people only hurt themselves (some of the flights with higher handicappers is a different story). Then for the club championship the back tee flight plays from scratch.

Yep, next year I am going to play in the championship flight. Even though I am currently a 9 I would much rather give my entry fee as prizes to people who don't cheat.

finally have a chance to get out tomorrow morning for the first time in a few months and have the first tee time. based on the forecast and the past few mornings, it's shaping up to be a three hour frost delay. lovely.

Heading out of snowy Denver for 4 days at Bandon. Weather is looking good. Two days of expected sunshine and two with some rain. First trip but I feel like I've read enough that I've appropriately packed.

Here we go!!!

Actually turned out to be a four hour delay. 8am turned into noon. Needless to say we didn't stick around, but on the bright side we did find a new diner near the course and had a great breakfast.

Course I played down by Akron was a pretty fun layout minus awful greens that hadn't recovered from being punched

Not sure anyone is interested but Amazon has the OptiShot 2 Golf Simulator for about 50% off so it is only ~$250.

Deal only lasts another hour maybe but figured I'd let people know if interested. I got one just to mess around with, reviews look OK. Not really expecting anything ground breaking just a fun little garage thing during the winter months.
