Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread
What was the old series on the golf channel that was a video blog/journal of nationwide tour players journey. Had Darron Stiles and his dad as his caddy a bunch of shows, maybe 5-8 years ago?. Life on the nationwide tour or Road to the PGA tour? Might be Nike tour back then and I might of been in high school thinking of it.
Took 45 minutes Googling. The Road:Life on the Nike Tour...

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread
Playing a 2v2 match play today. I have to give up 5 shots and haven't touched a club in 3+ weeks.
Gonna be brutal.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread
Gonna be a fairly tilty rant --
So one of our opponents was hospitalized and he brought in a replacement. Your team plays to your best handicap so we played vs an 8 (the sub).
We end up shooting gross 30 on the Back 9 and trailed the entire time. We birdied 12 - 15 and made up ZERO holes.
In my last 6 events now I've played opponents who bettered their handicaps by:
6, 8, 4, 9, 6, and 5 shots. Based off the USGA statistics, today's feat (-5) is a 276:1 occurrence.
Perhaps the joke is on me since I keep registering for these events rather than saving my competitive juices for the one scratch event of the season (Club Championship) but I can't help but be pretty frustrated.
Anyways, end rant.

That's not a rant to me, it's the truth. I totally think that the sand-bagging just has to stop. If people want to feel happy inside by winning a few bucks (hopefully not too much $ on the line) off other players than so be it, but it is just a disgrace to the game itself. I know it has probably gone on since the inception of the handicap system, but people like Bobby Jones and others continue to roll over in their graves when you hear stories like these.
I guess I will end my rant here as well.

Re: MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread
I've never played golf for money (thank god) but that stuff will never end. People gonna people. Just because they enter the grounds of a golf course doesn't mean they are suddenly righteous.
I know my wife's dad has wavered between a 1 and 3 and told me he's met a ton of "5 handicaps" that were a stroke or two better than him that day.
Check the odds on having a net -4, -5, -6, -6, -8, -9 shot against you consecutively... being sure to account for the fact I'm assuming you aren't playing against 40 handicaps (in which it's more likely to net such a large negative number).

RE: Sandbaggers
There's a regional seniors' golf association in my area that has a viable solution against sandbagging. They use tournament handicaps based on their events only. It seems to be fair from what I've heard from the old guys who frequent my foursome.
The local amateur circuit is ripe with 'baggers in the net divisions, it's so prevalent I wouldn't consider entering any of them if I weren't a gross contender. Thankfully, my golf friends are honorable and we enjoy fair handicapped matches on a regular basis.
Without a localized governing body, such as the seniors group I mentioned there's no control of the sandbagging that goes on. It's left to the handicap committees of local clubs and their pros to police their members. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen and net events become contests won by those whom can get away with the most.
Both clubs and their pros fear alienating their members and tournament participants for self-serving purposes. Hard-line approaches are seemingly unpopular, but they would benefit everyone involved in the long-run. Why can't bans/adjustments be enforced/implemented with a frequency adequate to quill the problem? I'm sick of seeing net scores in the low 60's and high 50's.

Yeah -- these aren't just cash game rounds, they are actually events at our Club. I never play for any significant sums unless it's scratch.

As long as its "Pro Shop Credit" and the amount is under $750, it's alright to play for money and accept "winnings"
Here's a link from the USGA
