Says who? The course? The course can put up a sign saying that if you make bogey on #18 you have to pay a $1000 penalty. Think they could make that stick?

When you buy a house on a golf course liability is assumed. A golfer is not responsible for damages during the normal course of play. Naturally if the golfer was trying to hit the house or screwing around in an abnormal way then he would be.

It's kind of like the internet, every sign on the golf course is true without question. Bonjour.

As ship--this is fond of saying, scratch golfers suck.

I also put out everything, including slam dunks - if it's really a ball you can't miss, then it doesn't take any extra time to just put it in the hole before picking it up (yes, I know it's probably actually half a second extra or so), and if it isn't, then it should be putted.

As for being responsible for damage - I don't know how things work in the US, but here you have to be a member of the national golf association to be allowed to play golf on all official courses (membership in any club automatically makes you a member of the national golf association also). Part of the obligatory membership fee is an insurance that'll cover a little over 500 000 USD of damages from accidental shots.

The insurance is valid on courses all over the world - some courses/countries still insist on charging an extra insurance fee when you play there though.

I'm a huge proponent of putting everything out unless it's inside 6". Play the game through the hole, it doens't end once you get to 3'. If it takes you too long to set up a 3 footer then learn to play fast. If you leave one short you should already have an idea of what it was going to do the last 3', if it goes long you should have seen what it does. Giving putts is just another way of cheating.

People that bitch about their handicap being too low if they're between 0-10ish when they give themselves putts inside 3'. JFC try putting all those out and watch your handicap shoot up 3 or 4 to what you actually are.

Holing everything out also prepares you for tournaments

yep, i'm with my brother a large percentage of the time i'm golfing and we gamble on just about everything you can gamble on, and the ones we'll give each other are the ones that you just want to lean over and tap in with the back of your putter anyway..

It's not a big deal to me. Like I said the course I play on is lined with homes. I've I'm in a foursome and a house gets hit less than 5 times a round it's a good day

Currently watching coverage of the KLPGA. Might need an intervention.

Also, I have this amazing talent where I can hit an 8.5 degree driver straight up in the air. Really need to get some video of it before I break something

What is this the Korea LPGA? Isn't that just the normal LPGA?

I didn't know there were enough Korean women not on the LPGA to form another tour.

I really don't get people who buy a house with the cart path just 20 feet away from their bay window. There's a public course downtown where houses are in play on almost every hole it's ridiculous...great place to bring a newbie friend and have a good laugh.

People like living off a golf course would be my guess. Every house has a willing buyer at a certain price. Except houses in Detroit.

My uncle is a member at some course he was far enough off not to get hit and he had his own golf cart in his garage, we would just hop in and drive to the course. Was a good way to do it imo

Guy in my one of my golf groups uses Pinnacle Gold golf balls (those are the neon yellow ones). Am I in the right to point and laugh at him?

What happens to the prize money if a random amateur somehow wins the US Open?

I'd imagine they redistribute the prize pool accordingly as though he never finished first (minus the $500 or whatever in shop credit he'd get lol)

Prizes would be distributed as if he/she never existed. I bring up she because in the late 90's an amateur lost in a playoff for the women's U.S. Open.

So if an amateur won, and there was a tie for 2nd/3rd, would there be a playoff for 2nd/3rd for first place prize money? Or would 2nd and 3rd chop 1st and 2nd place money?

2nd and 3rd would split the top two places.

Minor nit note, the term chop, while it's certainly accurate, isn't typically used when referring to golf tournaments.
