Re: Mental side of golf.

to get rid of these swing thought, you just need more practice using the correct swing. eventually these new swing thoughts should go away once it becomes second nature. if you dont want to be thinking about your swing when you are on the course, maybe you should put more work into your swing during the week before you go out there. you dont even need to hit balls on the range. just take a ton of practice swings whenever you have time.

Re: Mental side of golf.

Seperating the practice mindset from the play mindset is one of the most challenging things to do especially when starting in the game. It's like telling someone to try hard not to not try hard. What has worked for me is when I'm on the golf course is trying to concentrate ONLY on the path of the ball to the target once I'm over the ball. I visualize a tracer line all the way to where the ball will land. I do all my analysis while standing behind the ball going through my pre shot routine. Once I'm over the ball I picture the target and let the swing happen. Way easier said than done and I certainly don't accomplish it all the time. Pretty much taken from Rotella's books. GL and GL!

Re: Mental side of golf.

Easiest tip ever from Nicklaus. In between shots think or talk about something else, focus on something outside of golf or the next shot you are about to hit. If you just hit a bad shot don't overload your brain thinking about all the things that went wrong to hit that shot, how tough your next shot is going to be etc. Give yourself a mental rest in between shots but when it comes time to get to business and hit your next shot zone in on it completely then once again disconnect as you walk to your shot and repeat. For me personally it's worked and I've found I play my best golf when I just hit the shot and then let my brain wander off on something else, whether that be telling a joke, or striking up some conversation with the playing partners. Anything that keeps me away from worrying about or thinking about the next shot I have to hit. Once I get to the ball I can think about that.

Its not awful advice, but its like telling a player who is hitting it poor and getting frustrated to "stay calm".

In reality if you want to improve your mental game its a long term process of mental exercises, rehearsing routines, much like if you get a lesson from your pro he'll tell you to rehearse physical routines in order to lose the bad habit.

Ive read "Golf is not a game of perfect" and "putting out of mind",

There is some really helpful in them, and id definitely +1 the read, although IMO karl morris has taken the mental side of golf to a new level.
