I want to test myself in long drive competitions some day.

Let's just say I have a swing capable of hitting 300+ yards with improperly fit equipment during a typical round of golf.

Does anyone have recommendations on where to begin?

Go to someone that has a trackman and take a few swings. If your clubhead speed is more than 130 mph, you have a shot. If not, you don't.

Not sure but isn't there the possibility that he wants to do it for enjoyment, like my doctor who's obsessed with competitive cycling

Surprised large golf retailers haven't embraced long drive (lots of tinkering, expensive equipment obsession)

I can certainly train my swing to get that fast. I want to basically have my swing tweaked and then look at equipment.

I have a Krank Formula 5 driver that is 6* for sale. PM me if you're interested.

Anyone can do it for fun. There is a long drive forum on golfwrx.com that's worth checking out. To start you'll want to find a driver and get a properly fit shaft for you in the 45-48" range and go see if you can hit it.

48-50" is common and legal for long drive competitions right?

50" is the max driver length for LDA but they measure it different. They measure it vertically at a 90 degree angle from the ground.

Went into Golftown today n hit a few new clubs.

I was hitting the R15 and G30 both anywhere from 290-322 yards. I then picked up the m1 and first swing - 327. A few more in the 330's n then 344 yards. I was blown away at that driver I must say, feels real nice too.

I don't think I got one swing clocked higher than 117mph .avg was 110 I think. So I think I can get a lot faster still with some serious training/tweaking.

Just curious, don't mean this to sound insulting if it does...what's the purpose of these competitions? Win prizes or money or just a way to become a better driver? I'm new and didn't really know they existed.

You can win money in these events. Probably prizes too. Not 100% sure myself.

I definitely wouldn't say these events help you become a better drive on the golf course.. The swing itself is a lot less controlled and over-doing it compared to a swing on the course. Grip it and rip it. Tee it high and let it fly.

If Im not mistaken, now is a pretty bad time to get into LD unless you are doing it purely for fun. Remax sponsored it for a very long time and now they do not and there is no title sponsor at all. I have a buddy that is really into LD and hits it 380+. Ball speeds are ridiculous. But yeah with no title sponsor it definitely sucks a bit

Dont think it generated enough money or ratings. It certainly wont be inside the race track in Vegas (I think it was vegas) like in years past. It is in Oklahoma this year lol.

Thanks for the post/article. We will see what happens after it airs on the golf channel in a couple weeks. Hopefully it doesn't fade away to nothing.

I agree with the writer about the winner takes all format. I don't like that at all and I'm sure every player except the winner would agree too

Technically it's in OK, but barely over the TX border and one hour from DFW where Art Sellinger is based. Plus it's at the home of the biggest casino in the world!

Was wondering why it was at Winstar. A nice place to play poker but it is literally in the middle of no where. Almost an hour north of DFW
