**I get to rambling a lot here - so if u don't like ramblin - please move on.**

Johnny Miller is my favorite golf announcer. I know that he just did the Fed Ex Cup. Earlier this year at a major (I think it was the Masters), when it was over, Johnny & his co-announcer were sort of in a melancholy mood when it was over because they were saying how much they enjoyed Broadcasting it for so long & it was the last one they would do.

Did another network outbid them for it going forward? Does anybody know the story behind this? I'm really hoping this isn't going to be Millers last year of golf broadcasting & then he's hanging it up - but that he just won't be doing that Major anymore.

I know I could have researched all this but I wanted to hear what some other people thought of Miller's broadcasting. Also, I'm not a golf fanatic, but I watch a lot of the big tourneys. I happened to see that guy Feherty closing out an interview with Lanny Wadkins and it sounded like he does broadcasting on the Web.com tour or whatever its called.

And it also sounded like Wadkins may have been in the running to be one of the major golf announcers, but I think something happened - although I'm not sure what.

I'm originally from the Akron, Ohio area and when I was young (long time ago), I went to the Firestone South Course where they've held some great touneys over the years. What I remember about Wadkins was it seemed he had a fast swing, especially on the way down, & he was one of those streaky guys who could get hot.

Speaking of that....Johnny Miller was amazing out on the West Coast when he got hot. I know I'm ramblin now, but what odds would you folks put Tiger at now of passing Jacks record in the Majors, and wasn't that amazing what Horschel did after going into the weeds with the 6 iron!

Watsons gotta be 2nd guessing not taking Horschel for the Ryder, as well as that putt he missed on 18 to win the British Open at 59. There was a good documentary made about the U.S. Open in 1960 at Cherry Hills, where Hogan was at the end of the line, Arnie was growing an Army, and that chubby guy from Ohio State. Past, present & future.

Back then they played 36 holes on Saturday to finish. Young folks now would be shocked to know that almost everything was closed on Sundays back then. Jack played with Hogan & Hogan said if that kid knew how to win, he woulda won by 10 shots. Nicklaus talks about a ball mark he didn't repair that cost him.

Hogan was always Mr. precise. But on 17 he did what nobody thought was coming, he hit the green on his 3rd to the par 5 & it backspinned right into the creek, then he just went down & hit it out of the creek. Palmer came from 7 shots back in the final round to win it, his winnings were $14,400. Nicklaus was 2nd alone & won $0 (he was still an amateur). All 3 were either in the lead or tied for it.

It is insane how much money people make playing sports these days. And the fans go so crazy over guys who are all mercenaries - more money, I'm gone. Whole teams turn over in 3 or 4 years sometimes.

They interviewed Hogan like 25 years after that day & asked him about his creek ball on 17 - he leaned over and stared at the guy & say it was still eating his guts out. Hogans dad was poor & killed himself with a gun & I think Hogan either saw him do it, or I think more likely was the 1st person to find him.

Hogan, dirt poor, Arnie, blue collar, Jack, his dad owned some pharmacies in Columbus and did well. Well, I think thats nuff ramblin.

Oh yea, forgot one thing. They mentioned several times that if Horschel won it was gonna be life changing money. I guess so, what was the total with the 2 wins and the Fed -ex cup, around $13,000,000 - plus endorsement money for sure.

How many people were thinking 13 million+......$250,000 would be life changing money for me.

Won't address everything but Miller is widely regarded as the best golf announcer on the air.

Personally I agree with that but also find him incredibly annoying at times.

Faldo can't put aside his personal feelings about players and it shows almost every time he talks. Most of the time I mute the broadcast if he's on.

I like Miller, despite his obsession with Tiger's swing (now surpassed by Chamblee's obsession).

Miller is also convinced everyone dropping strokes late in tourney is choking. I think he had his own choking experiences late in his career, and therefore takes some comfort in continually bringing up how golfers react to pressure.

loK2thabrain; - thanks for chipping in on a bit of my ramblin post & I know that was a bad pun. And when I said Miller was my fave - I meant best also.

One announcer that used to be annoying to me at times, especially when he was younger, because he revered so many athletes & that included golfers which I think was & still is his main gig. I mean, if I remember him correctly when he was new to the job, the golfers, especially Tiger & the closest ones to him, he spoke of them as almost dieties. Oh yea, the guy I'm referring to is Jim Nance.

I wonder if we'll ever see the day again when Tiger had so lapped the field that when he was on one of his runs.....the smart money would be on Tiger vs. THE WHOLE REST OF THE FIELD! Which when u think about it.....that is really amazing. It seems to me we wont see that again. And another thing I don't think we'll see again is Luke Donald #1 in the world.

Another thing that seems quite awesome is how far Rory can hit the driver. When he first came on the scene & started showing up on leaderboards - I thought he looked around 6 foot tall & maybe 175. But the announcers say he is 5'9" & weighs around 160. That really surprised me when you'd think of Daly, & D. Johnson, & Bubba.

Boy, I wonder if he'll be able to continue that into his 30's considering all the torque he's gotta expose his system to all the time.

I think your'e avatar showed Tiger>Jack. I'm just curious as to what exactly you meant there. With a lot of sports stats not meaning much over time passing because they lower the pitchers mound to get higher scoring games. You seldom see a kick-off return anymore & stuff like that.

I'm guessing your are saying if you had a machine that could genetically put Jacks body in the best shape & when he was playing his best golf - & of course you'd have to figure the equipment being the same. Tiger Woods was hands done better than Jack when they both had their A games.

Is that what u are saying. I'm also still curious what people think at this point in time......is Tiger gonna end up with more Majors than Jack?

OK - I'm done ramblin.

Fox bought the rights to broadcast US Open, I believe Greg Norman is supposed to be their on-air expert

Yea, I'm curious to see how he'll work out. And I still think Lanny could have something to offer at a major network, although as I said from the get-go, I still think Miller is who they're chasing, he is sort of like the Johnny Carson (RIP) of golf announcers.

Miller had a Hall of Fame career which included starting the final round of the1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont in 12th place, 6 shots behind 4 co-leaders & he went by Nicklaus, Player, Trevino, & Palmer to win it shooting a 63 (only 6 players shot under par in the final round).

His 63 still remains the lowest final round to win a Major. By the way, he won $35,000 for winning the U.S. Open that year. The player who finished 1st in 2014 (Martin Kaymer) won more than 46 times what Miller won.

And another thing I like about Miller is he never brings up the fact (wonder if they might have this in his contract) that he is a Mormon.

I think most folks here will pick up on that. I guess he could also wing it out there after a guy scores his 3rd goal in a game.

One more tid-bit on Johnny Miller. Playing in the British Open in 1972 in Muirfield in the 2nd round on the 5th hole, Miller made an albatross. Bet that is a small club for scoring one of those in a major.

Wow was I wrong - there are 18 of them. 17 were 2's on Par 5's.

And the 18th was Young Tom Morris at Prestwick in 1870 & he made a 3 on a par 6.
