What putting aids have you guys used and what would you recommend for someone who wants to roll the ball more consistently straight with his flatstick?

I'm about a 15-18 cap or so and putting is far and away the worst aspect of my game. Ideally I would be looking for something to practice with at home but I'm not completely adverse to using moderately sized contraptions on the practice green at my local range.

Thanks in advance.

Something I did when going through a bad time on the greens. On the practice green, take a club from your bag, lay it flat on the ground and then from about 6-10 feet away, roll putts at the club, anywhere at the club for a couple of minutes. it doesn't matter where on the club you are hitting or at what pace, just roll putts at it. it gives you a good feel for hitting a target and should give you more confidence aswell as improve your putting as you go out onto the course.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Can't go wrong with an eyeline putting system from eyeline golf.

Quite weird seeing this, i'm just writing my final year dissertation at university in the UK on whether training aids improve performance from 10 foot! i've tested the Rhythmiser and the Rail, which are up there in the most popular aids on tour. i found that they will help improve higher handicaps in various areas of testing but not in more elite players in a 6 week period. due to their being way more variables in putting than just having a perfect stroke, factors such a as quality of putting surface, players green reading skills, weather conditions all have a massive impact on actually holing a putt.
If i were u i would try some of these aids they will help improve a higher handicaps technique due giving instant feedback. the Rhythmiser is the putter with the wippy shaft and the Rail is the training aids that looks like a meter ruler! check them out

I've looked at this before but never pulled the trigger b/c of the price. You can experiment with arced strokes or square to square.

I have one and it's ok. Kind of hard to really get it setup correctly. Good because it can do sq to sq or arch depending on your beliefs.

VJ Trolio developed the putting arch & in my opinion is by far the best training aides available. Developing great speed control and line selection will improve your putting drastically.

I am at Handicap 20. I always look for an item between the ball and the hole. Then i am targeting only this item. Is this a good idea or is it nearly impossible to do this on perfect greens ?

A bit of a tangent, but keep in mind that the ball starts in the direction of the club face at impact. Club path has relatively little effect on the direction (or really anything) of a putt. The saying that you "pulled" or "pushed" a putt is a bit misleading as it implies that the club path caused the miss. So, concentrate on delivering a square club face to the ball at impact. Speed and green reading come with experience... but a square club face can be practiced.

Stan Utley's Learning Curve would have the same desired effect as the Putting Arc correct?

That's the only one I can find in my area.

Yes, I just like the arch more personally. But for your needs as a starting point it should be just fine. Get a metronome and set it at a pace that feels comfortable (I think 80 is a nice pace but haven't used one in a bit so I may be wrong) and just make strokes to the beat for as long as you can handle it. Tiger is great at stroking it to the beat...sorry had to say it.

apropos of very little, every time I see the title of this thread I think it should be about people who suffer from putting AIDS. I think I only had a couple three putts this weekend, so it was more like putting bronchitis.

Thanks to everyone with suggestions ITT I'm going to go get the Learning Curve and a metronome and give them a try.

In the meantime I've tried switching my grip to the pencil grip and I seem to be much stronger already. It's seems to have 'cured' my yips by taking my right hand out of the equation a little more.

Any of you guys use the pencil or the claw or do you all just have a conventional putting grip? What grips are you using and what are you averaging for putts per round?

I was a little yippy about 6 years ago and I putted that way all summer and it was awesome. I have since lost the yips and went back conventional but if I get them again I will switch back in a heartbeat.

It was a serious response. I've tried many a putting gizmo and none of them are more effective than just hitting actual putts on an actual green. What I was trying to say is I don't think any putting training aid is worth the money.
