How do you keep the gnats away? How do you keep the gnats away?

I got eaten alive tonight. Coleman's insect repellent w/ 15% deet did nothing to deter the little bastards. What do you guys do to keep these things away?

Fabric softener sheets work somewhat.
Also skin-so-soft.

Haven't had a whole lot of luck with fabric softener sheets, but I've been amazed by Skin So Soft. And I was a skeptic.

BTW, I'm talking about regular old Georgia gnats, not the run-you-off-the-beach black gnats. Have no clue about those.

Which skin so soft product are all of you talking about? I just did a search and several items came up (bath oil, body lotion, shower gel, and even one noted as bug guard).

I don't -have- any, I just use it when other guys in my group are carrying it.

That said, the kind they have is a spray bottle, if that helps any.

You are trying to level people, right?

Ineedaride2, if you go down to the store to get something to keep gnats away, you know the name of the company but not the product name. And you have the above choices, would you go for the shower gel?

Gnat deflection is only my secondary goal. I'm really going for the silky smooth skin.

Yeah, okay, I know, it sounds stupid that I listed bug guard there. I should have noted that, in my searching, I found this:

http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/skeeters.asp

which notes that the bug repellent version of the Skin So Soft didn't do particularly well in tests. So, I was wondering if it's one of the other products that people here are using, and have found effective.

I get eaten alive when I play around the mountains in LA. I would like some help on this problem too.

The worst is when they get in my ears.

What's wrong with the 100% deet stuff? I think the OFF deepwoods version has it. It's probably not great to put directly on your skin regularly, so you can spray some on your hat, shirt and shorts and maybe a touch on your skin.

Played all weekend, and I'm sad to say that this will probably be the last weekend until fall where gnats were not an issue.

Here comes 6 months of swarming hell.

Learning to play golf on the Jersey Shore around the marshes (Seaview, Brigantine, Stone Harbor, etc in particular if anyone's familiar) was terrible. I would actually NOT practice or play sometimes due to the annoyance factor involved with gnats. Mosquitos and greenheads I can deal with...even the pine/strawberry flies (whatever they're called).

Go 10 minutes inland to Blue Heron Pines and there's not one bug on the course outside of a few areas around some water on the course. We didn't even carry bug-spray in the golf shop when I worked there.

My solution was normally just to stay in. I HATE bugs more than I LOVE golf I guess =P

GRowing up in the South, Skin So Soft was the go-to....and it was the body lotion we used that came in a spray pump...they only added the bug guard after they realized what every one was using their product for.

Seriously, Skin So Soft is like magic...keeps all the noseeums away.

Skin So Soft AND Off...I use them together when it gets real bad on some of the State Park courses I play.

Definitely get a spray bottle though...I cant see putting it on my hands and then continuing to play.
