Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

Last year I hosted a group of guys where I worked(and where dagolfdoc works). We had a group of 8 so back to back foursomes. I'm in the 2nd group. We get to the 8th hole, which is a not quite driveable short par 4 from the tips. The group of guys I was with were not very good so we were playing a tee or two forward which made it now a possible driveable par 4 for me(a little over 300 yards).

The hole is really narrow and at about 100-90 yards to the green it slopes down hill all the way to the green. There is a slow group ahead of our 2 groups so we are a little backed up and have to wait for our first group on the hole. After they are out of view we wait for a little bit to give them time to at least get on the green, anything we hit up near the green will be rolling anyway and its a narrow opening to the green. So we wait for a bit, then the "head" of the whole group who I am playing with just tells us to go ahead.

I hit one of the better drives of my life right towards the center of the green. After everyone hits and we get up near the green we find my ball on the front fringe, not bad, 20ish feet for eagle. Well the group in front of us plays though the slow group on the 9th hole and we don't catch them/see them again till we walk off the 18th. They are waiting for us and immediately after we finish they ask who's ball was on the front fringe on #8. I say it was mine. One guy pulls down his shirt to reveal a super nasty bruise just under his collarbone. Says he was just standing on the front of the green waiting for the rest of his group to chip up, when he turned around to see if he could see any of our drives and a ball drilled him right in the chest. Luckily it wasn't too serious and nothing a cold beer couldn't fix. I definitely felt pretty bad about it.

*funny side note, I played with this exact same group this past weekend(it's kind of an annual thing, they come in town to play a baseball tournament every year) and this story came up as we were trying to decide which group would tee off. Everyone decided it would be safer if I was in the first group. Haha.

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

Hit myself in the chest during my first round this year. Tried to hit it close to a tree from about 5 feet back but just missed and had the 5 hybrid shot bounce directly back at me and smoke me in the left manboob. Didn't really leave much of a mark at all, but I did have layers on.

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

I recall seeing data that a ball hit 300 yards on a drive will have slowed down to about 55-60 mph by the time it finally lands.

Anyone remember or even better able to find and post the video of John Daly in a skills competition about 10-15 years ago? The incident I'll never forget is John being on the teebox and for some reason teeing a ball up and addressing the ball the wrong way facing the grand stand right behind the teebox. He then hit a rocket drive that cleared the heads of the folks on the top row by a yard or two. I literally couldn't believe what he just did nor that they showed it on TV since I assume like most silly skill competitions of other sports it had been taped weeks or months prior. That ball was going 150-180mph+ when it zipped over the heads of the spectators. If he hits it even a little bit thin or misjudges his ability to clear the spectators he almost certainly kills someone.

Just noticed that Daly finished T3 in the Masters in 1993. It would have been hilarious to see Augusta trying to civilize him for the next 30 years if he'd won that.

Here's a link to a page that mentions some of Daly's problems. The driver over the grand stand happened in 1993 and got him a $30k fine. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/g...g-1914816.html

I wish someone could find the video. It was "OMG, how did they let him do that?!?!"

Haven't been hit, or hit anyone yet, which is suprising because you can easily spray it onto another hole/fairway, left and right at my track, and i've played more than enough to be hit atleast 5 times by now definitely came close to being hit a few times though.

I was hit by a bladed bunker shot right in the ass.

In a junior golf tournament a while ago i hit my playing partners mom. It was a par 5 i hit a 3 would trying to reach the green and it overdrew but i did not think anything of it until we got up there. It hit her in the ankle. That sucked.

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

Freshman year of high school on golf team. Was playing practice round with best player on team Mason. Teammates behind I guess thought it would be funny to hit into our group on a par 5. "FORE!" Mason spins around and takes it directly square center of the face right on the nose. Blood going everywhere. His face was a swollen bruised mess for quite some time after that.

I hit myself in the forehead once trying to punch a ball out of the woods. It caught something and came straight back at me. Hurt like hell and left me pissed off for a few holes after.

And speaking of crazy golf stories just last year I was working at a golf course, this guy who brought his young kid to the course with his father had just finished the round. I put all their stuff in the car and the grandpa hops in to bring the cart back unaware the kid is walking behind the cart, he jams it into reverse and before I can yell out "you're about to be struck by a vehicle" he steps on the gas and runs the little guy over. One of the craziest things I've ever seen. Dad freaks they all get into cars and rush to hospital. Upon further inspection a chunk of the kids skin/hair was left on the cement where it happened.

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

Junior tournament when I was 12. A friend who I am still friends with even after this. We are in the middle of the fairway on hole 2. I was 45 degree to his right and he shanks it dead into the outside of my ankle. I fall faster than a suicide jumper with my bag on my shoulders. Swelled up to the size of a softball. Ended up beating him in a playoff for sweet revenge, but sweeter to rub it in when we play now.

Not golf. Was 10 my dad was throwing pitches so I could practice hitting. Drilled one back at him right in the groin. He fell to the ground rolling around. I ran for the house...

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

the pro at my course lost sight on one of his eyes after getting hit by a topped wedge shot. he got hit in the temple, and didnt immediately go to the hospital. this happend 3-4 years ago. i live in thailand and this story is very much related to how careless thais are on the golf course. they stand right in front of other players when they play, and dont feel any responsibility for ppl standing in front of them when they shoot. so, if you ever play in thailand be very careful about this. especially in big flights, thats when they really speed up to, making the carelessness even worse.

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

I Haven't been hit by a golf ball, but I have been hit by a seven iron.

I was having a hit with my 8 y.o son and neither of us were paying close enough attention and he swung back and got me right in the jaw.

PS I have hit & killed mid air two birds if that counts, one was in comp and was probably the best drive I hit all day until the stupid (but now dead) bird flew into it, I guess if you are having a crap day (me) you can always take heart that some one else is having a worse day (bird).

Cheers

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

At the Benson + Hedges International Open in 2002 at the Belfry, a pro called Raymond Russell teed off on the 10th [that classic par 4 where you can drive the green but it has water etc]

Anyway I was up by the green and got his drive right into my right forearm, kept his ball in-play and it didn't actually hurt too much, flabby arms ftw.

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

My friend once shanked a ball off the heel of his club on the tee shot of a par 5. The ball flew through a fence and knocked a cyclist of his bike on a sidewalk that surrounded the course. The cyclist was irate as he hurled the ball back towards our group.

Re: Hitting someone/being hit by a golf ball.

Cyclist is doing it wrong imo.

Here's my best getting hit story.

When I was in college I did something dumb while drunk (hard to believe, I know) and ended up having to do some community service to make the boo boo go away and was on probation (don't get in trouble during the next 12 months probation, not check in with your parole officer or something). Anyway...

I am playing golf with my parents on a Sunday afternoon and the course is packed. We are waiting on every shot and of course the group behind us are waiting on us. Dude behind us hits into us on the fourth or fifth hole, doesn't yell fore, just stands there and watches as his ball rolls between me and my mom. We still can't hit by the time he gets up to us and I give him the "WTF was that? We aren't going anywhere."

Anyway, about two holes later we are on the green and a ball bounces once and hits my mom. Same dude. I check on my mom, make sure she is ok and then I grabbed an iron out of my bag (I'm a bad ass, doncha know) and start walking down the fairway right at him. Dude stands there like "you want some, come get it." I get about 20 feet from him and my mom yells "KenoVictoryLap, DON'T, you're on PROBATION!!!"

Dude immediately starts walking backwards, hands out and says something like "dude, I'm sorry, you're right, won't happen again, I'm sorry."

There was an open hole behind us the rest of the day.
