Help a hacker out

Hey guys,

I went to the range today where I filmed some swings and would love to get some feedback. I've been lurking here for a while and know a lot of you are very good at finding things that I tend to glaze over so I'm hoping you can work your magic again.

I noticed from the down the line view that my head is moving way too much and that on the downswing it shoots up causing me to hit the ball thin way too often. (or fat if I overcompensate) More of the same from the face on view and nothing else is really jumping out at me but don't be afraid to prove me wrong.

Highish fade?

I'm not sure where this went but I don't think I was happy about it

Thanks!!

Re: Help a hacker out

Are your distances pretty weak?

Caveat: I"m a hack, too and I'm only posting b/c nobody else has yet. It's tough to tell with a realtime video and you're a lefty, which makes it a litter harder for me.

From these videos though I would agree that your head is moving too much. You can clearly see the "down,up" in the bottom video. But in the top video it also looks almost like it it swaying forward and almost pulling your swing through, rather than your hips doing that. Your hips, and arms should clear through the ball before your head comes up appreciably. Any time your big, heavy head moves, it will take your center of gravity with it, and that's not good for finding a consistent bottom of your swing.

Take a look at Phil here.

His backswing is much quicker and deliberate and longer than yours, yet he keeps a very balanced base, and his head does not move a lot until after he's hit the ball.

Also your front knee doesn't seem to be activating on the backswing as it should, but I really don't know/not sure enough to comment on it.

Re: Help a hacker out

You've got a lot of good things going on. Not the action of a hacker.

However,
you do have some things that hold you back-
Firstly, your grip. It's the start of all your difficulties. Mostly your left hand.
I suggest googling "good golf grip" and spending an hour absorbing all that you find.

You have the club very much in a shut position on the way back.
Having it shut causes one to have a blocking motion coming through.
One way to accomplish a blocking motion is the down and up motion you've acquired.
But it all starts with the poor grip.
Work on improving your grip, and many good things will follow.
Good luck.

Re: Help a hacker out

Thanks for the responses and if I end up posting different videos I'll see what I can do about slowing them down.

I'm actually pretty happy with the distance I get out of my irons. (though I wish I could say the same about my driver) My main issue right now is consistency and as you said all that head movement has to make it harder then it should be to make good contact consistently.

Great stuff. I've been meaning to reexamine my grip but thought I had more serious problems to address before I did so. For some reason it never really occurred to me that it was my bad grip that was causing a lot of those other issues.

Re: Help a hacker out

I was back at the range today and am looking to make sure I'm on the right track. I still haven't figured out how to slow down the video, if someone could point me in the right direction to make that happen that would be great.

Overall I'm as happy as I can expect to be at this point considering I've actually hit a few off the hosel (lol me). My swing has noticeably shortened since the grip change, which I'm pretty happy about and when I make good contact it seems to be more solid. I think there's a bit less down to up going on but it's obviously still there.

I also noticed that I c0ck my wrists really early in the start of the swing. I should probably stop doing that after I get the rest of this stuff figured out, right?

High draw

Thanks again!
